Expedition ships of three sizes side by side: blue-hulled Plancius in front of Greg Mortimer and the larger Roald Amundsen

Small vs large expedition ship: which is best for Antarctica?

How passenger numbers change your time ashore in Antarctica: IAATO's size groups, the landing sites closed to bigger ships, fares by ship size, and all 35 ships we cover by guests, age and ice class.

The short answer

For most travelers, a ship of 200 passengers or fewer. No more than 100 people may be ashore at one Antarctic site at a time, so on a 130-guest ship about three in four guests can land together, against one in five on a 490-guest ship. Eleven of the 45 Treaty site guidelines also bar ships carrying more than 200.

Facts checked October 15, 2026 against 89 sources.

A ship carrying 200 passengers or fewer is the better choice for most Antarctic travelers, because the rules cap how many people can stand at a landing site, not how many a ship can carry. IAATO, the Antarctic tour operators' association, allows no more than 100 visitors ashore at one site at a time, one ship per site, and holds ships of 201 to 500 passengers to "stringent restrictions on time and place of landing activities".1 On top of that, 11 of the 45 Antarctic Treaty visitor site guidelines admit only ships carrying 200 or fewer.2 A bigger ship is not a bad trip, and on a daily basis HX's 490-guest ships are among the cheapest ways to get a two-person cabin, as the fare table below shows. But each guest gets a smaller share of every landing.

What are IAATO's ship size categories?

IAATO sorts vessels into four groups by how many passengers they carry, and the group decides whether and how a ship may land.3

GroupPassengersLandings
YAUp to 12 (yachts)Yes
C113 to 200Yes, including sites closed to bigger ships
C2201 to 500Yes, with stricter limits on time and place
CRMore than 500No, cruise only

The Treaty's visitor guidelines define a ship as "a vessel which carries more than 12 passengers".4 For 2026-27, IAATO's April estimate has 45 vessels making 408 traditional seaborne voyages to the Antarctic Peninsula with 65,055 passengers, against 7 cruise-only ships making 14 voyages with 26,238.5

How does ship size change your time ashore?

The bigger the ship, the smaller the share of its guests who can be on land at once, because the 100-person limit is the same for every ship. Guides, leaders and crew helping with the landing do not count toward the 100, and at least one actively guiding staff member is needed for every 20 visitors.1 On a 130-guest ship such as Sylvia Earle, 100 is about 77% of the ship. On the 490-guest Fridtjof Nansen it is about 20%, so the ship must rotate at least five groups through a site to land everyone (our arithmetic).67

Operators' own promises show the difference. Atlas, with 176 guests in Antarctica, says its Zodiacs "will take you ashore up to twice daily under suitable conditions".8 Viking, with 378, includes "a minimum of one shore excursion per landing day; there may two on some days".9 HX runs optional activities such as kayaking in turns, Group A first, then B, and so on, with how many groups go out depending on conditions and sign-ups.10

On larger ships, more time ashore can become something you pay for. On Seabourn Venture and Seabourn Pursuit, 264 guests each,1112 Seabourn sells a Polar Pass from $1,850 that promises "priority access and significantly more time to explore", the choice to be "first off the ship during landings", and "more time ashore as well as extended Zodiac excursions".13 Its 2026-27 search data lists Polar Pass options at $1,850 and $2,250.14

Site rules can cut the number further for every ship. At Goudier Island, site of the Port Lockroy base, no more than 60 visitors may be ashore at once and 350 a day; Wordie House allows 36 at a time, Detaille Island 50 and the Yalour Islands 60; Hannah Point allows 100, with no more than 50 on the Point itself.2

Which landing sites are closed to ships over 200 passengers?

Eleven Treaty site guidelines set "Max pax on board: 200": Penguin Island, Barrientos Island (Aitcho Islands), Hannah Point, Paulet Island, Turret Point, Snow Hill Hut, Shingle Cove, Devil Island (Vega Island), Baily Head on Deception Island, Seabee Hook at Cape Hallett and Cape Bird on Ross Island.2 A ship carrying more than 200 cannot land at any of them, whatever the weather. Our Snow Hill Island page covers one of these sites in more detail.

Another 14 guidelines let bigger ships in but limit how many may come each day:

Daily limit for ships over 200Sites
No more than 1Brown Bluff, Horseshoe Island, Detaille Island, Port Charcot, Yalour Islands, Georges Point
No more than 2Petermann Island, Whalers Bay, Telefon Bay, Danco Island, D'Hainaut Island, Pendulum Cove
No more than 3Cuverville Island, Yankee Harbour

Sites such as Neko Harbour and Half Moon Island admit ships of up to 500 with the standard 100 ashore and no extra limit on bigger ships.2 The Antarctica visitor rules guide lists the rest of the rules.

How many passengers do expedition ships carry?

Our 35 expedition ships carry between 88 and 490 guests in Antarctica, and 28 of them stay at or under 200. Small no longer means old: 21 of those 28 were built in 2019 or later, and the only PC5 and PC2 hulls are on ships that can land at least half their guests at once, while all seven ships above 200 are PC6 ships built from 2019 to 2023. The last column is the share of a full ship that the 100-visitor limit lets ashore at once at a standard site, our arithmetic from the operator's figure.

Four ships that could carry more than 200 hold their Antarctic sailings to 200: Ponant says its ships "do not carry more than 200 guests at a time" there,38 and Scenic gives 228 guests with 200 in Antarctica for both Eclipse ships.4041 Ships above 200 fall in IAATO's 201 to 500 group, with the stricter landing limits described above.1 IAATO's vessel directory often lists a higher capacity than the operator sells (196 for Hondius, 530 for Roald Amundsen), so we use the operators' figures and note the gap on each ship page.46 HX's 490 is the capacity on its ship pages; its FAQ allows up to 500 on both ships in Antarctica, which leaves them in the same group.10

Where sources disagree, the table follows the most primary one. Viking Octantis was delivered by its builder, Vard, in December 2021, and Viking, which says it entered service in January 2022, lists it as built in 2022.808943 HX gives Fridtjof Nansen's build year as 2020, while its owner reported delivery in December 2019.785 World Voyager's 2020 is IAATO's build year; Atlas lists the ship as "Launched: 2023".6972 Swan Hellenic's FAQ says its ships have PC5 hulls, but SH Diana's own page gives PC6.8634 Sylvia Earle's PC6 is SunStone's rating for its Infinity class of ships, which includes Sylvia Earle; Aurora's own page for the ship gives no ice class.616

Do bigger expedition ships cost less?

Not reliably: the operator matters more than the size. On the Peninsula trips of 10 to 13 days priced below, the cheapest day on our largest ships costs about the same as on our smallest, and the mid-size luxury ships cost about twice as much. Each fare is the lowest the operator published for 2026-27, per person, read on October 14 or 15, 2026; per-day figures are our arithmetic.

SizeCheapest per day we foundFare and daysPer day
Up to 150Plancius (108), Mar 26, 2027$7,050 for one berth in a shared four-berth cabin (the two left were for women), 10 days4783$705
151 to 200Hondius (170), Mar 17, 2027$7,800 for one berth in a shared four-berth cabin (offered to women only), 11 days48$709

301 to 400Viking Octantis (378), Feb 8 or 19, 2027$14,999 in a Nordic Balcony, two sharing, Fall Sale ending Oct 31, 2026, 13 days50$1,154
401 to 500Fridtjof Nansen (490), Oct 30, 2026$8,830, two sharing, after HX's 130th anniversary discounts (the extra discount needs a booking by Nov 9, 2026), with a Buenos Aires hotel night and flights to Ushuaia, 12 days5184$736

The Oceanwide fares exclude flights; the HX, Viking and Seabourn fares include charter flights between Buenos Aires and Ushuaia.47515049 So for a two-person cabin with flights included at the lowest daily price, the 490-guest HX ships are hard to beat. On the Plancius departure, every two-person cabin was waitlisted or down to a single berth for a man when we read it, while a twin porthole on the Hondius trip was $9,650 each, about $877 a day, flights extra.8348 If you will share a cabin with a stranger of your own gender, the small Oceanwide ships cost about the same per day as HX and land a far larger share of their guests. Longer voyages cut the daily rate further whatever the size: HX's 19-day Antarctica and Falklands trip on Fridtjof Nansen from March 19, 2027 was $10,485, about $552 a day.88 More fares are on how much an Antarctica trip costs.

Is a bigger ship smoother in the Drake Passage?

No operator or regulator we found publishes motion figures by ship size, so we cannot say a bigger ship rolls less. What operators do publish is hull and stabilizer design. Ponant says its ships' stabilizers have "dynamic fins that adapt to the movements of the ship" and that guests who expect seasickness "experience reduced symptoms".52 Ulstein, the designer of the X-Bow fitted to several of the 130 to 175-guest ships, claims "minimal slamming" and "a reduced pitch response to waves" for it; those are the maker's claims.53 Our best expedition ships guide lists which ships have each. If the Drake Passage is your worry, compare flying over it: see fly or sail the Drake Passage.

What about ships with more than 500 passengers?

They cannot land anyone; IAATO bars landings from ships carrying more than 500.3 Seven such ships are expected on cruise-only Antarctic voyages in 2026-27, including Holland America's Oosterdam and Zaandam and Majestic Princess.5 These are a different trip, compared in big-ship Antarctica cruises.

Does ship size matter in the Arctic?

Yes, in Svalbard most of all. Since January 1, 2025, Svalbard's protected areas have had "a limit of 200 passengers on board ships", and tourist landings there are allowed only at 43 mapped sites.54 Those protected areas cover about 65% of Svalbard's land and 84% of its territorial waters,55 so a ship carrying more than 200 may not enter most of Svalbard's territorial waters. Elsewhere in the Arctic, AECO, the Arctic operators' association, tells its members to plan no more than 100 passengers ashore in the same general area at once outside settlements, and to avoid sharing a landing site with another ship.56 See Svalbard cruises and Arctic cruises.

Which size should you choose?

Pick by what you want from the days in Antarctica:

  • Most time ashore: a ship of 150 or fewer, where 100 visitors is two thirds of the ship or more: Plancius or Ortelius on a budget, the Aurora trio of Sylvia Earle, Greg Mortimer and Douglas Mawson, or Lindblad's National Geographic Endurance.
  • Balance of space and access: a ship of 170 to 200 such as Hondius, Ocean Albatros or Ultramarine. No site guideline turns it away for its size, and at least half the ship can be ashore at once.
  • Lowest daily price for a two-person cabin with flights, or a bigger ship's facilities: the 490-guest Fridtjof Nansen or Roald Amundsen, or the 378-guest Viking ships, accepting shorter or fewer turns ashore and no landings at the 11 sites capped at 200.
  • Skip the ships over 500 unless you only want to see Antarctica from the deck.
