What are the best expedition ships for Antarctica?
The best Antarctic expedition ships by traveler type, with each pick's guests, share ashore at once, ice class, price per day and who should skip it, plus build years and stabilizers.
The short answer
Five ships stand out for 2026-27. Hondius is the value pick: 170 guests, Polar Class 6, stabilizers, from about $877 a day in a twin cabin. Aurora's 130-guest Douglas Mawson and Sylvia Earle can land about three in four guests at once. Quark's Ultramarine carries two helicopters, and Ponant's Le Commandant Charcot is the only Polar Class 2 ship, for deep ice.
Facts checked October 15, 2026 against 70 sources.
Five expedition ships stand out for 2026-27 Antarctic trips, each for a reason you can check. Hondius is the value pick: built in 2019, Polar Class 6, stabilized, 170 guests, from $9,650 each in a twin cabin for 11 days, about $877 a day.12 Aurora's Douglas Mawson and Sylvia Earle carry 130 guests, so under IAATO's limit of 100 visitors ashore at a site about three in four can land at once.3442 Ultramarine carries two helicopters,5 and Le Commandant Charcot is the only Polar Class 2 ship we cover, built for multi-year ice.6 We have not sailed on any of them; every figure here comes from the operators, the shipyards and the rules.
Which expedition ship is best for each kind of traveler?
Match the ship to the one thing you care about most; the table gives the numbers behind each pick and who should look elsewhere. "Ashore at once" is 100 visitors, the IAATO limit at a site, as a share of the ship's guests, and "per day" is the lowest fare we found divided by the trip's days, both our arithmetic from fares read on October 14 and 15, 2026.42
| Best for | Ship | Guests, ashore at once | Ice class | Per day | Not for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lowest fare | Plancius | 108, 93%7 | 1D8 | $705: $7,050 for 10 days, a berth in a shared four-berth cabin, Mar 26, 20279 | Couples: every two-person cabin on that date was waitlisted or down to one berth for a man66 |
| Value on a newer ship | Hondius | 170, 59%1 | PC61 | $877: $9,650 each in a twin porthole for 11 days, Mar 17, 20272 | Balcony seekers: only its six grand suites have one1 |

| X-Bow at a mid-range fare | Ocean Albatros | 175, 57%18 | PC619 | $900: $9,895 for 11 days, three sharing a Triple, Mar 18, 202720 | Couples on that fare: a Superior Balcony for two was $13,195 each20 |
| Most time ashore on a new ship | Douglas Mawson | 130, 77%3 | PC630 | $1,554: $17,096 for 11 days, three sharing, Feb 27, 202731 | Tight budgets: more than twice the daily fare of Plancius or Hondius |

| A balcony for less | Viking Octantis or Viking Polaris | 378, 26%22 | PC622 | $1,154: $14,999 for 13 days, Nordic Balcony, two sharing, Feb 8 or 19, 2027, or on Polaris Feb 4, 15 or 262346 | Most time ashore: at least four groups per landing and no landings at the 11 sites capped at 20068 |
| Families | National Geographic Endurance | 138, 72%35 | PC535 | $1,664: $19,968 for 12 days, two sharing, Dec 2, 2026, sold out; the cheapest open cabin was $27,252, or $2,271 a day36 | Tight budgets: the open cabins cost more than three times Plancius's daily fare |
| Deep ice | Le Commandant Charcot | 200 in Antarctica, 50%69 | PC26 | $2,114: $29,600 for 14 days, lower deck balcony, two sharing, Dec 16, 202739 | A 2026-27 trip: the Antarctic fare we found is for the 2027-28 season |
Read the fare basis before comparing. The Oceanwide fares leave out flights to Ushuaia, and the cheapest Oceanwide places are berths in cabins shared with strangers of the same gender: the two berths left at $7,050 on Plancius were for women, as was the $7,800 berth on the Hondius trip ($709 a day).9662 HX, Quark, Viking and Seabourn include a Buenos Aires hotel night or charter flights from Buenos Aires, and Ponant a Santiago hotel night and flight to Ushuaia.1226232939 Two of these fares are time-limited: HX's extra anniversary discount applies to bookings made by November 9, 2026, and Viking's Fall Sale ends October 31, 2026.6723
Four alternatives sit close to the picks. If you want the whole ship ashore at once, Antarctica21's Magellan Explorer takes at most 88 guests on its air-cruises.44 Greg Mortimer and Sylvia Earle share Douglas Mawson's 130-guest size; the lowest Sylvia Earle fare still for sale was $17,336 in a triple on the March 2, 2027 Wild Antarctica trip, which flies one way between Punta Arenas and Antarctica.45 Scenic Eclipse II keeps to 200 guests in Antarctica and carries two helicopters and a submersible, used at extra cost, with a guest-to-crew ratio Scenic gives as "close to 1:1".32 Its $18,973 Preferred Fare for 13 days from February 25, 2027 (about $1,459 a day) is for a Deluxe Verandah Suite, two sharing, ends October 28, 2026, takes $2,500 off in place of Scenic's airfare offer and must be paid in full within 30 days.33 And SH Diana, the largest Swan Hellenic ship with 192 guests and a PC6 hull, costs $9,800 per person for 10 days with flights from Buenos Aires, about $980 a day.1416
Hondius was the ship of the 2026 Andes hantavirus outbreak: 13 cases, including three deaths, first reported to the World Health Organization on May 2, 2026.40 WHO declared it over on July 2, 2026,41 and our Hondius page sets out what the health agencies found. For families, Lindblad Expeditions takes children from age 4 on its polar voyages and runs a family program, National Geographic Explorers-in-Training.47

Two lines in the table need a caveat. Swan Hellenic's FAQ credits its whole fleet with "PC5 ice-strengthened hull and extra-large stabilizers", but SH Diana's own ship page gives PC6, one class below its sisters, so we use PC6 and treat the stabilizer line as the operator's fleetwide claim.1514 Viking Octantis was delivered by the shipyard, Vard, in December 2021; Viking says it entered service in January 2022, with its first Antarctic voyages, and lists 2022 as its year built.217022 On National Geographic Endurance's December 2 departure the cheapest open cabin was Category 4, $27,252 each for two or $22,710 each for three.36
What are the newest expedition ships?
The newest ship we cover is Aurora's Douglas Mawson, delivered on September 9, 2025, the seventh and last of SunStone's first series of Infinity-class ships.30 Before it came four ships in 2023: Seabourn Pursuit (delivered July 31, 2023),27 Ocean Albatros,17 SH Diana13 and Scenic Eclipse II.32 The years 2019 to 2022 brought most of the rest, including Hondius (2019), National Geographic Endurance (delivered March 16, 2020), Ultramarine (handed to Quark on April 1, 2021) and Sylvia Earle (2022).134244
New is not automatically better, because the newest ships share designs. Douglas Mawson and Ocean Albatros are the seventh and sixth of SunStone's Infinity-class ships, a design 104.4 m (343 ft) long with an X-Bow,301749 so between ships of one class the operator, the cabins and the fare count for more than the hull.
Which expedition ships have the highest ice class?
Le Commandant Charcot is the only PC2 ship in our list, rated for year-round operation in moderate multi-year ice.650 Four ships are PC5, rated for year-round operation in medium first-year ice: Lindblad's National Geographic Endurance and National Geographic Resolution,51 and Swan Hellenic's SH Minerva and SH Vega.5253 Most of the rest are PC6, built for summer and autumn in medium first-year ice.50 The Atlas-built ships, World Navigator, World Traveller and Quark's World Voyager, carry Ice Class 1B and Polar Code Category C, the open-water and light-ice end of the scale.5455
A higher class matters most on voyages deep into the ice, such as the Weddell Sea, the Ross Sea or the North Pole, where Le Commandant Charcot's 13-day voyage from August 8, 2027 starts at $44,370 in an upper decks balcony stateroom.48 For a summer trip to the Antarctic Peninsula, every class in the table above is sold for the route, from the 1D Plancius up. Expedition cruises explained sets out what each class means.
Which expedition ships have an X-Bow, and does it help?
Eight of our ships have Ulstein's X-Bow, an inverted bow the designer launched in 2005:56 Douglas Mawson, Greg Mortimer and Sylvia Earle (Aurora), National Geographic Endurance and Resolution (Lindblad), Ocean Explorer (Quark), and Ocean Albatros and Ocean Victory (Polar Latitudes).574958596019 Ulstein claims "gentle wave entry", "minimal slamming" and "a reduced pitch response to waves",56 and Lindblad says it gives "an extremely smooth ride even in adverse conditions".35 Those are the maker's and an operator's claims; we found no independent measurement of motion in the Drake Passage. If seasickness is your main fear, see fly or sail the Drake Passage.
Which expedition ships have stabilizers?
Most ships built since 2019 list them, and some are designed to work when the ship is stopped. Ocean Albatros has Rolls-Royce Aquarius 100 zero-speed stabilizers,17 Douglas Mawson has zero-speed stabilizers,30 and Viking's ships combine fins with U-tank stabilizers that Viking says cut rolling "by up to 50 percent when the ships are stationary".2161 Ponant says all its ships except Le Ponant and Spirit of Ponant have stabilizers with "dynamic fins".38 Among older ships, Oceanwide lists no stabilizers for Plancius or Ortelius, while Poseidon's Sea Spirit has been retrofitted with Rolls-Royce zero-speed stabilizers.84362 Neither Seabourn's ship pages nor Scenic's page for Scenic Eclipse II mention stabilizers; ask before booking if it matters to you.2832
Are older expedition ships worth booking?
Yes, if price and a small passenger count matter more to you than hull technology. Plancius (1976) and Ortelius (1989) carry 108 guests each, so 93% of the ship can be ashore at once, and sell Antarctic trips from $7,050 and $7,800, both for shared berths that were down to places for women when we read them.74396366 Heritage Adventurer, built in 1991 in Rauma, Finland, is rated 1A Super, which Heritage calls the highest passenger-ship ice class rating.64 National Geographic Explorer carries 148 guests and has no Polar Class published.65 What you give up: no published stabilizers on the two Oceanwide veterans and an older ice notation instead of a Polar Class. Small vs large expedition ships sets out what passenger count changes ashore, and how to choose an Antarctica cruise and best Antarctica cruise lines cover the rest of the decision.
