Is Sea Spirit a good ship for Antarctica?

Yes, if cabin space matters more to you than a new ship. Sea Spirit, Poseidon Expeditions' only ship, carries 114 passengers in suites of 20 to 63 m² (215 to 678 sq ft). Built in 1991 and renovated in 2017, it is 90.6 m (297 ft) long with zero-speed stabilizers. Its 2026-27 Antarctic fares start at $8,846 per person in a Triple Suite.

Is Sea Spirit a good ship for Antarctica?

Yes, for travelers who want a roomy cabin on a small ship more than they want a new one. Sea Spirit is the only ship of Poseidon Expeditions: 90.6 m (297 ft) long, with 114 passengers in suites of 20 to 63 m² (215 to 678 sq ft), each with its own bathroom.12 It was built in 1991 and renovated in 2017, and its fin stabilizers can work even when the ship is stopped.31 Its 2026-27 Antarctic fares start at $8,846 per person in a Triple Suite on the 12-day Classic Antarctica trip of November 28, 2026, a 25% discount on the $11,795 regular fare for bookings made by November 30, 2026.2

The trade-offs are age and access. At 35 years, Sea Spirit is three decades older than newer rivals such as Aurora's Sylvia Earle (2022), and only 14 of its suites, plus the Owner's Suite, have outside space of their own.244 Every Antarctic voyage crosses the Drake Passage by sea in both directions.5 We have not sailed on Sea Spirit; this page draws on Poseidon's specifications, deck plan and fares, SunStone Maritime Group's technical sheet, and IAATO and Svalbard rules.

What are Sea Spirit's specifications?

Sea Spirit is a small, all-suite expedition ship registered in Madeira, Portugal.1 Poseidon publishes the basics; SunStone Maritime Group, which lists the ship in its fleet, publishes the technical sheet.6

Passenger numbers differ by source. We use Poseidon's 114, the figure it sells and prints on every voyage page.2 IAATO lists 127 passengers, the same as SunStone's bed count, and 110 crew.36

How old is Sea Spirit, and how long will Poseidon sail it?

Sea Spirit turned 35 in 2026, and Poseidon has published departures on it through March 31, 2028; SunStone Maritime Group lists the ship as available for sale or charter from October 1, 2028.356 So every trip on sale now is on Sea Spirit and ends before that date. Poseidon has not published a season after 2027-28; when it does, check which ship it names.

IAATO records the ship as built in 1991 and sailing to Antarctica since 2010, and Poseidon has run it in both polar regions since 2015.39 It was renovated in 2017, and Poseidon says it has been retrofitted with Rolls-Royce zero-speed stabilizers, retractable fins that reduce roll when the ship is anchored, moored or drifting, cut drag under way, and remove vibration and noise.1 That helps on landing days, when the ship stops while Zodiacs run to shore.

Which Sea Spirit cabin should you book?

For most couples, the Classic Suite is the value pick: 21 m² (226 sq ft) with a picture window, for less than the smaller Superior Suite.2 Sea Spirit has eight suite types on five decks. These are the per-person fares on the November 28, 2026 Classic Antarctica voyage, with two sharing unless noted, after the 25% offer and at the regular rate:

SuiteSizeDeckBeds and viewNov 28, after 25% offRegular

Superior20 m² (215 sq ft)ClubTwins or a king; window onto the outside walkway$12,746$16,995
Deluxe24 m² (258 sq ft)SportsTwins or a queen; private balcony$14,171$18,895
Premium30 m² (323 sq ft)SunTwins or a queen, lounge area; private balcony$15,221$20,295
Owner's63 m² (678 sq ft)SunKing, separate living room, jetted bathtub; private deck$19,196$25,595
Single21 m² (226 sq ft)OceanusKing, for one; picture window that may be covered in rough seas$17,546$23,395

Three things in that table are easy to miss. The Superior Suite costs more than the Classic but is smaller, and its window faces a deck walkway where other passengers pass.2 The Main Deck Suite is the cheapest two-person cabin and the largest suite without outside space, but it has portholes, not a window.24 And the Deluxe Suite adds a balcony and 4 m² (43 sq ft) over the Superior for $1,425 more per person on this departure (our arithmetic).

Balconies are scarce: the deck plan shows 8 Deluxe Suites on the Sports Deck and 6 Premium Suites on the Sun Deck, and the Owner's Suite has a private deck above the bridge.4 If outside space matters, book early and read our balcony guide.

Traveling alone, the two Single Suites are the better buy when one is free: $17,546 against $21,286 for a Classic Suite alone at Poseidon's 1.7 times supplement (our arithmetic).24 The Single Suite showed "request availability" when we checked; the alternative is to share a Triple, Main Deck, Classic or Superior Suite with a guest of the same gender at the shared fare.2

How do landings and activities work on Sea Spirit?

Poseidon's brochure shows Zodiacs alongside the Marina Deck at the stern, and Poseidon says it normally runs two outings a day of about 2.5 hours each, a mix of landings with walks and Zodiac cruises.42 Ashore in Antarctica, IAATO allows no more than 100 visitors at one site at a time, not counting expedition staff.10 Sea Spirit sits just above that line when full; IAATO's 2026-27 estimate averages 98 passengers per Sea Spirit voyage, so on most departures everyone can be ashore together (our arithmetic: 1,078 passengers over 11 voyages).11 In Svalbard, where ships in the national parks are capped at 200 passengers, Sea Spirit is well inside the limit.12

On board, the facilities are scaled to a small group. The restaurant has 128 seats and open seating with no assigned tables; the presentation lounge seats 110.61 There is an outdoor bistro and jacuzzi, a gym, a library, a Club Lounge with live music in the evenings, and an open bridge when conditions allow.41

Kayaking and camping are optional extras with limited places. Sea kayaking costs $1,395 on the 12-day Classic Antarctica trip and $875 in Svalbard; a night camping in Antarctica costs $495, for adults only.21314 Photography lessons from the expedition photographer and a polar plunge are part of the regular program.2 The kayaking and camping guide compares what other ships charge.

Where does Sea Spirit sail in 2026-27 and 2027?

Sea Spirit spends October to April in Antarctica, sailing from Ushuaia, and May to September in the North Atlantic and the Arctic.58 Its year, month by month:

WhenWhereStarts and ends
Oct 2026Falklands and South Georgia, 19 daysUshuaia, round trip15

Jul to Sep 2027Svalbard, East Greenland and IcelandLongyearbyen to Reykjavík, or the reverse on Aug 121819
Sep 2027Scoresby Sund, East GreenlandReykjavík, round trip20

Two Arctic examples show the price range: the eight-day West Svalbard trip of July 25, 2027 starts at $7,996 per person in a Main Deck Suite after 20% off, and the 14-day Svalbard circumnavigation of July 7 at $14,795 in a Triple Suite.2113 The Poseidon Expeditions page lists every trip with its fare. Sea Spirit visited Franz Josef Land in its first season with Poseidon, 2015, but no 2027 departure goes there.98

How does Sea Spirit compare with similar small ships?

Sea Spirit is close in size to Oceanwide's Plancius and Ortelius, with larger cabins, and costs much less than Aurora's newer Sylvia Earle.

ShipOperatorPassengersBuiltLengthWhat stands out
Sea SpiritPoseidon1141991, renovated 201790.6 m (297 ft)All suites of 20 m² (215 sq ft) or more; drinks and hotel night included2
PlanciusOceanwide1081976, rebuilt 200989 m (293 ft)Most cabins about 12.5 m² (135 sq ft); "not a luxury vessel"22
OrteliusOceanwide108198990.95 m (298 ft)UL1 ice class, equivalent to 1A; outfitted for helicopter flights23
Sylvia EarleAuroraUp to 1302022104.4 m (343 ft)X-Bow hull designed to cut through swell2425

On price, Plancius starts lower, at $7,050 for a bed in a shared four-berth cabin on a 10-day late-season trip, while Aurora's 11-day Spirit of Antarctica on Sylvia Earle was listed from $19,995 in a triple for December 29, 2026, already sold out.2627 Pick Sea Spirit over the Oceanwide pair for cabin space and an all-in fare; pick Ortelius for a higher ice class; pick Sylvia Earle for a modern hull and newer interiors.

Who should pick Sea Spirit, and who should not?

Pick Sea Spirit if you want a private suite for two at a mid-range fare, house wine, beer and spirits included in the fare, and a ship small enough that most departures land everyone at once.211 It suits couples, travelers who want to spend Christmas or New Year in Antarctica, German speakers, since every voyage runs in English and German, and Svalbard visitors in July.288

Skip it if you want a recent build, a balcony at a low fare, or a flight over the Drake; see fly or sail the Drake Passage and the guide to choosing an Antarctica cruise for other ships.34 And if you are looking for the Poseidon trips to the North Pole, those ran on a Russian icebreaker, not on Sea Spirit, and are not on sale.29

Our verdict

A roomy, mostly all-inclusive small ship at a mid-range fare: every cabin is a suite of at least 20 m², and most departures can land everyone at once. It is 35 years old, publishes no ice class and has only 14 balcony suites, so pick a newer ship if those matter.

Best for: couples who want a private suite without paying for a balcony, travelers who want drinks included, holiday voyages in Antarctica, German speakers, Svalbard in July
