South Georgia
Where South Georgia is and how to visit it: which voyages go and what they cost, whether the extra week is worth it, the best months, the wildlife and the government's rules.
Where is South Georgia, and can you visit it?
South Georgia is a British overseas territory in the South Atlantic, about 870 miles (1,400 km) southeast of the Falkland Islands. With no airport or permanent residents, it is reached by expedition ship, usually on an 18 to 23 day voyage from Ushuaia or Punta Arenas, between late September and March. Every visitor needs a £250 permit, and the beaches hold about 450,000 pairs of king penguins.

- Getting there
- By ship only: there is no airport. Voyages sail from Ushuaia or Punta Arenas, often calling at the Falklands first, and spend 2 to 4 days at sea to reach the island depending on the route.
- Wildlife
- About 450,000 pairs of king penguins, over 1 million pairs of macaroni penguins, 105,000 pairs of gentoos, about 4 million Antarctic fur seals and 400,000 southern elephant seals, plus humpback whales and wandering albatrosses.
- Landings
- Entry permit required (GBP 250 per person from July 2026). Landings only at designated sites, boots washed in biocide before and after every landing, at least 16 ft (5 m) from wildlife, and no sitting or kneeling on the ground.
South Georgia is a mountainous, glaciated British island in the South Atlantic, about 870 miles (1,400 km) southeast of the Falkland Islands, whose beaches hold most of the world's breeding Antarctic fur seals and hundreds of thousands of king penguins.13 There is no airport, no visitor accommodation and no permanent population, so you can reach it only by sea, most often on an expedition cruise ship or a yacht, and every visitor needs a government entry permit.123 The voyages we checked all combine it with the Antarctic Peninsula, on trips of 18 to 23 days from Ushuaia or Punta Arenas, so for most people the real question is whether it is worth the extra week.17192022
Is South Georgia worth it?
Yes, for travelers who care most about wildlife and polar history and can spend about a week more, but not for those on a tight budget or who dread rough seas. Quark Expeditions sells both versions on the same ship from the same port, which makes the price of the extra week easy to see. For the 2027-28 season, its 18-day Penguin Safari (South Georgia plus the Peninsula) on Ocean Explorer from Ushuaia costs $27,695 per person at the regular fare, against $14,895 for the 11-day Antarctic Explorer, which visits only the Peninsula: about $12,800 more, at the brochure fares Quark listed on October 14, 2026.1718 Both itineraries give 4 days on the Peninsula; the extra 7 days buy 3 days at South Georgia and 4 more days at sea.1718
What those 3 days add, according to the South Georgia government's own counts:13
- About 450,000 breeding pairs of king penguins, with the largest colonies at St Andrews Bay and Salisbury Plain.
- About 4 million Antarctic fur seals, 95% of the world's breeding population, and about 400,000 southern elephant seals, roughly half the global population.13
- More than 1 million pairs of macaroni penguins and about 105,000 pairs of gentoos.
Then there is Grytviken, the former whaling station where Ernest Shackleton is buried and where every ship stops.711
Skip it if your budget only stretches to a short Peninsula trip, if you cannot spare close to three weeks, or if open-ocean days are the part you dread. The island has no search and rescue and no medical facilities for visitors, and there is no independent transport off it: the government puts the Falklands at least 3 days' sail away and South America 5.2 Every extra sea day is a day in Southern Ocean swell.
What cruise lines go to South Georgia?
Small expedition ships, sold by operators including HX, Lindblad Expeditions, Viking and Quark: in 2024-25, 40 expedition cruise ships made 110 visits, 83.6% of them by ships carrying fewer than 200 passengers, and none by ships with 500 or more.7 Operators are normally members of IAATO, the Antarctic tour operators' association.3 These are the combined South Georgia and Antarctica voyages we checked on October 14, 2026:
| Operator and voyage | Length | Days at South Georgia | Route | Lowest cabin, per person, as listed |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Quark Expeditions, Penguin Safari | 18 days | 3 | Ushuaia round trip, Ocean Explorer | 2027-28: $27,695 brochure fare; 2028-29: $24,69517 |
| HX, In-depth Antarctica, Falklands and South Georgia | 23 days | 4 | Santiago hotel and flight to Punta Arenas, MS Fram round trip from there | December 4, 2027: $25,708 regular, $21,128 on offer; cheapest sailing November 6, 2026 at $17,774 (was $22,934); includes the entry permit19 |
| Lindblad Expeditions, Antarctica, South Georgia and the Falklands | 21 or 22 days | 5 | Ushuaia round trip, no flights included | "From" $22,715, but that October 30, 2026 sailing is sold out, as is the $33,301 November 12 sailing; cheapest open cabin $41,093 (November 6, 2026); later sailings from $30,0002024 |
| Viking, Antarctica and South Georgia Island | 19 days | 3 | Buenos Aires flight to Ushuaia, via the Falklands, Viking Octantis | March 2, 2027: $28,999 on a Fall Sale for bookings made by October 31, 2026 (headline "from" $29,999); air from $1,9992122 |
Lindblad gives the most days at South Georgia (Days 8 to 12 of its itinerary), and its ships include National Geographic Endurance, but its cheapest open cabin costs far more than the others.2024 HX has the lowest fare per day on this list: about $1,120 a day at the regular fare for its December 4, 2027 sailing, or about $920 with the offer, including a Falklands stop and flights within Chile.19 Quark's Penguin Safari is the shortest of the four and skips the Falklands.17 For the bigger picture of what a trip costs, see our Antarctica trip cost guide and how to choose an Antarctica cruise.
How much does it cost to visit South Georgia?
On the fares in the table above, expect about $18,000 to $29,000 per person for the lowest cabin on a voyage that includes South Georgia with current offers, or more than $30,000 with Lindblad.17211924 All four leave your flights to South America as an extra; Viking sells air from $1,999.192021 On top of the fare, every visitor needs a South Georgia entry permit. The government fee is £250 per person from July 1, 2026, rising to £275 from July 1, 2027 and £300 from July 1, 2028.4 Permits must be applied and paid for at least 8 days before arrival or a £50 late fee applies, and they are valid for 40 days.4 Operators can buy them on passengers' behalf; HX states that it covers the permit cost for its guests, so ask your operator whether it is in the fare.419
The fee is part of how the island pays for its own protection: the government is self-funding, from fishing licenses, tourist landing fees and stamp sales.10
When is the best time to visit South Georgia?
November to February is the safest choice for most people, but every month of the season has something specific. Ships visited from late September to the end of March in 2024-25: the first expedition ship, Magellan Explorer, arrived on September 30, 2024, and the last, Hondius, on March 28, 2025.7 Most visitors come in summer because winter storms and sea ice make the island hard to reach.1
| Period | What is happening, per the government's wildlife records | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| Late September to October | Elephant seals give birth in October and males fight for harems; St Andrews Bay peaks at about 6,000 breeding females13 | The elephant seal season at its peak |
| November to December | Fur seals breed from mid-November to early January, and males defend beach territories fiercely; macaroni penguins breeding (October to March)1323 | Busy beaches; some dense fur seal beaches can be unsafe to land on13 |
| January to March | Fur seal females and pups move inland into the tussock grass in late summer; elephant seals return to molt13 | Seal pups in the tussock; January temperatures at Grytviken ranged from 32°F to 66°F (0°C to 19°C)1 |
King penguins are there in every month, because their breeding cycle takes 14 months from courtship to a fledged chick, so the colonies never empty.13 For timing across the whole Antarctic season, see the best time to visit Antarctica.
What wildlife will you see on South Georgia?
King penguins, fur seals and elephant seals are the animals you can count on, given the numbers above.13 Around 20,000 humpback whales are estimated to feed in South Georgia waters seasonally, and southern right, fin, sei, sperm and Antarctic blue whales are also seen.1 South Georgia holds 1,278 pairs of wandering albatrosses (2014-15 survey).13 Compare the species in our penguin species guide.
The landing sites that ships use most, after the compulsory stop at Grytviken, were St Andrews Bay (80 landings in 2024-25), Fortuna Bay (58), Gold Harbour (48) and Salisbury Plain (42).7
The island's ground-nesting birds are recovering because the rats are gone. A project led by the South Georgia Heritage Trust baited the island in 2011, 2013 and 2015, clearing more than 247,000 acres (100,000 hectares), and South Georgia was declared free of rats and mice on May 18, 2018; the native South Georgia pipit and pintail are recovering.9 Biosecurity dog teams carried out 82 vessel searches from June 2025 to May 2026 and found no live rodents.8
Bird flu is the current caveat. Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) affected South Georgia for a second season in 2024-25; no sites were closed, but 19 landings were aborted because visitors could not keep their distance from animals that might be infected.7 The government says HPAI remains at low to moderate levels and the risk to humans is very low.8
Can you visit South Georgia, and what are the rules?
Yes, by ship, but every visitor needs an entry permit, lands only at designated sites, and follows a strict biosecurity routine.12 The rules that will shape your days ashore:
- Briefing and film: you must receive a biosecurity briefing and watch the official government visitor film before arrival.5
- Clean gear: boots are washed in biocide before going ashore and again on return to the ship, at every landing; bags, pockets and Velcro are inspected and vacuumed.5
- No fresh food ashore: fresh fruit, vegetables, meat, eggs and unpasteurized dairy products must not be brought for personal consumption.5
- Distance: keep at least 16 ft (5 m) from all wildlife and carcasses; up to 33 ft (10 m) is recommended where animals look ill, and the landing is aborted if the distance cannot be kept.5
- No sitting: you must not sit, kneel or lie on the ground, and should avoid crouching near the shore because of fur seals.5
- Hands off: collect nothing (shells, stones, bones, eggs), do not use flash photography, do not smoke, and stay with the group.6
The old whaling stations at Husvik, Stromness, Leith and Prince Olav Harbour are closed because of asbestos and collapsing buildings, with 660 ft (200 m) exclusion zones around them.12 Visitors cannot fly in, and aircraft including helicopters are not permitted.3 Breaking the wildlife law can mean up to 2 years in prison, an unlimited fine, or both.1 Since 2022 the whole island has been a Terrestrial Protected Area, and the South Sandwich Islands to the southeast are closed to visitors.14
What is there to see at Grytviken?
Grytviken is the one stop every ship makes, for customs and a biosecurity audit, and it is the island's history lesson.7 Carl Anton Larsen founded the whaling station there in 1904, and it operated until 1965; it was also the last port of call of Shackleton's Endurance in 1914.1011 Shackleton died aboard the Quest in King Edward Cove on January 5, 1922, and is buried at Grytviken.11 In 1916, after the Endurance was lost, he, Frank Worsley and Tom Crean crossed the island's unmapped interior on foot and reached the Stromness whaling station on May 20.16
The South Georgia Museum at Grytviken has been run by the South Georgia Heritage Trust, a charity, since 2006.15 In 2024-25 the church held four services and a wedding, the post office opened for every ship, and the Main Store opened part way through the season under supervision.7
Who owns South Georgia, and does anyone live there?
South Georgia is a UK Overseas Territory, administered with the South Sandwich Islands; Argentina has claimed it since 1927 and briefly occupied it in 1982.10 Nobody lives there permanently. The British Antarctic Survey runs two bases: King Edward Point, near Grytviken, with eight staff plus two government officers, and Bird Island, with four.10 Museum staff join them in summer.1 The main island is about 105 miles (170 km) long, more than half of it permanently covered in ice, and its highest peak, Mount Paget, rises to 9,626 ft (2,934 m).10
How do you get to South Georgia?
You sail: there is no airport or runway, and there is no visitor accommodation ashore.13 Three of the four voyages above sail from Ushuaia, Argentina (Viking flies you there from Buenos Aires), and HX sails from Punta Arenas, Chile.17192022 Quark's Penguin Safari spends 4 days at sea from Ushuaia before reaching South Georgia and then 2 more crossing to the Peninsula, while HX calls at the Falklands first and then spends 2 days at sea to South Georgia.1719 All four voyages cross the Drake Passage at least once, between the Peninsula and South America; if the crossing is your main worry, read whether to fly or sail the Drake Passage before you book.17192022
