How many days do you need in Antarctica?

Trip lengths and the days you actually spend in Antarctica, counted from each line's day-by-day itinerary for 2026-27: fly-cruises, two-day Drake crossings, the Antarctic Circle, South Georgia and the longest voyages.

The short answer

Plan on 11 to 14 days for a first trip to the Antarctic Peninsula. The Drake Passage takes about two days each way by ship, which leaves 4 to 7 days in Antarctica itself. An 8-day fly-cruise still gives you 4 days there. Adding South Georgia and the Falklands takes 19 to 23 days, and most voyages that cross the Antarctic Circle run 13 to 16.

Facts checked October 15, 2026 against 46 sources.

Most Antarctica trips last 11 to 14 days, but the number that matters is how many of those days you spend in Antarctica. We counted it from each line's own day-by-day itinerary for the 2026-27 season: a classic sea voyage from Ushuaia gives you 4 to 7 days at the Antarctic Peninsula, because the Drake Passage takes about two days each way. Flying over the Drake turns an 8-day trip into 4 days in Antarctica, and on most longer Peninsula voyages the extra days go to the continent, not the sea.

Our counts include only the days an itinerary gives to exploring Antarctica, the Peninsula, the South Shetland Islands or the Antarctic Circle. Crossing days, flight days and hotel nights are left out. Plans are not promises: Oceanwide and HX, among others, say weather and ice decide the final route.12

How long is an Antarctica cruise?

Most Peninsula trips run 11 to 14 days, and the full range runs from 8 days to grand voyages of more than 60. Aurora Expeditions puts its own range at "9 to 34 days, with most cruises ranging from 12 to 21 days."3 Here is how the lengths sort by type of trip, with the days in Antarctica each one buys:

Type of tripTotal daysDays in AntarcticaDays crossing the Drake by sea
Fly both ways over the Drake84, plus 2 flight days at King George Island0
Sail one way, fly the other104, plus 1 flight day2
Classic Peninsula voyage11 to 124 to 54
Longer Peninsula voyage13 to 146 to 72 to 4
Longest Peninsula voyages1694
Falklands, South Georgia and the Peninsula19 to 232 to 71 to 4

The ranges come from the voyages in the next two tables; the very long routes are covered further down.

How many days do you actually spend in Antarctica?

On a Peninsula sea voyage, 36% to 56% of the days by our count, and longer trips generally give a bigger share. The table counts days in Antarctica for 19 Peninsula voyages from seven lines, shortest first.45

Two things explain most of the spread. First, the same total can hide a different trip: Quark's 11-day Antarctic Explorer starts with a night in an Ushuaia hotel and gets 4 days in Antarctica, while Oceanwide's 11 days start with an afternoon boarding in Ushuaia, are all on the ship and get 5.411 Seabourn goes the other way and numbers its Buenos Aires hotel night day 0, so its 11-day trip spans 12 dates.12 Second, the two extra days on a 13-day trip almost always go to Antarctica: Oceanwide's Basecamp adds two days to its 11-day route and gets 7 days there instead of 5.111 Viking reaches 7 days on 13 by scheduling one sea day on the Drake each way, plus a day of scenic sailing past Cape Horn on the way back.18

How long does it take to cross the Drake Passage?

About two days each way by ship. Lindblad says the round trip by sea "takes two days at each end of the voyage (four days total)," and Oceanwide and HX itineraries schedule two-day crossings.21112 By our measure, the route from Ushuaia to Half Moon Island in the South Shetlands is 650 miles (1,046 km), 47 hours at 12 knots.22 Storms can stretch or cut that: a ship slows in rough seas and may leave Antarctica early ahead of a storm, Antarctica21 notes, and in 2025-26 IAATO reported that difficult weather led to cancelled landings and voyages shortened by a day or more.2324 What the crossing feels like, and how to cope, is in Drake Passage seasickness.

Can you do Antarctica in a week?

Yes, on an 8-day fly-cruise, which still gives you 4 days at the Peninsula. Quark, Aurora and Lindblad all run one: a charter flight from Punta Arenas or Puerto Natales in Chile to King George Island on day 2, four days of exploring, and the flight back on day 7.678 Lindblad counts five nights aboard in Antarctica on its 8-day version, six on a 9-day version and seven on a 10-day version.21 The flight itself takes about two hours.21

The catch is the weather at King George Island, which can hold flights for a day or more.23 Costs, delay records and refund rules are compared in fly or sail the Drake Passage.

How many days do you need for South Georgia and the Falklands?

Plan on 19 to 23 days. Adding South Georgia and the Falkland Islands roughly doubles the trip, but it does not add days in Antarctica: most of these voyages spend 4 to 6 days there, about the same as an 11 to 13 day Peninsula trip.

VoyageTotal daysFalklandsSouth GeorgiaAntarctica
Oceanwide, Falkland Islands, South Georgia and Antarctica2519242, plus an afternoon and the South Orkneys

Lindblad, Antarctica, South Georgia and the Falklands3121254
HX, In-depth Antarctica, Falklands and South Georgia3223344
Quark, Epic Antarctica3323247

The extra time goes to the sea: five or six days at sea between the islands on most of these routes, on top of the Drake.2831 Some departures of Lindblad's trip run 22 days, and it sails in both directions.31 Quark's Epic Antarctica gets 7 days in Antarctica, including two at the Antarctic Circle.33 Whether the islands are worth the extra week is the subject of is South Georgia worth it.

How many days do you need to cross the Antarctic Circle?

At least 10 days if you fly over the Drake, or 12 by sea, though most voyages that aim for it take 13 to 16. The Circle lies at 66°33' south, and flying over the Drake is the fastest way there: Quark's 11-day Antarctic Express: Crossing the Circle flies to King George Island on day 2 and aims for the Circle on days 6 and 7, and Antarctica21 lists a 10-day Polar Circle Air-Cruise.4244 The shortest sea voyage we found is Atlas Ocean Voyages' 12-day (11-night) Ushuaia round trip from December 23, 2026, which schedules the crossing on day 4, straight after the Drake.43

Longer voyages give you more time south. Aurora's Across the Antarctic Circle takes 13 days with 6 in Antarctica, Oceanwide's Polar Circle voyage on Ortelius 13 with 7, Quark's helicopter voyage 14, and Lindblad's Quest for the Antarctic Circle 16, with "nine days on the Continent."1516195 None can promise the crossing: Lindblad heads south "as conditions allow," and Aurora plans to cross "conditions permitting."515

What is the longest Antarctica cruise?

Up to 67 nights, on grand voyages that carry on from Antarctica to another continent. Scenic lists a 67-night Grand Voyage from Buenos Aires to Palma de Mallorca on Scenic Eclipse II, leaving February 25, 2027.46 Seabourn's 66-day From the Scotia Arc to Storied Spanish Coasts leaves Buenos Aires on Seabourn Venture on March 2, 2027, the same day as its 21-day Antarctica, Falklands and South Georgia trip, and ends in Amsterdam.45

Viking's 41-day The Americas and Antarctic Explorer runs the other way, from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, through the Panama Canal and down South America's Pacific coast to 7 days in Antarctica and Ushuaia; its only sailing, November 6 to December 16, 2026, was sold out on October 14, 2026.34 Ponant's Unexplored Western Antarctica runs 31 days, 29 nights on board, from Ushuaia to Hobart, Tasmania, on Le Commandant Charcot, leaving January 11, 2028,35 and its Ross Sea voyage sails 22 days round trip from Dunedin, New Zealand.36

How much do you see in a day in Antarctica?

Usually two outings a day, by Zodiac or on land. Aurora says it "generally make[s] landings or Zodiac excursions twice a day," and Quark that "Each day, you will take Zodiac excursions from the ship."104 Viking promises at least one shore excursion per landing day and sometimes two, and Seabourn lists its included Zodiac and landing excursion at about 1.5 hours.3738 Across the whole industry, IAATO counted 3,425 landings on 539 Peninsula voyages in 2025-26, an average of about six landings a voyage by our division.24

So each extra day in Antarctica buys about two more outings, and another chance to land if wind or ice cancels one. How ship size affects landings is in how to choose an Antarctica cruise.

Do more days in Antarctica cost more?

More in total, but often less for each day in Antarctica. On two pairs of voyages from the same line, the longer trip costs $2,033 to $5,700 more but $175 to $559 less per day in Antarctica, by our arithmetic from the fares below.1321217

VoyageDays in AntarcticaLowest fare, per person, two sharingPer day in Antarctica
HX Highlights of Antarctica, 12 days, October 30, 2026135$8,830 (was $10,589)$1,766
HX Iconic Antarctica, 16 days, March 4, 202729$10,863 (was $13,861)$1,207
Seabourn Great White Continent, 11 days, December 8, 2026125$17,298$3,460
Seabourn Antarctica Exploration, 13 days, January 7, 2027177$22,998$3,285

The HX fares are the lowest on each trip's page on October 14, 2026, promotional fares under HX's 130th anniversary offer, with the regular fare in parentheses; both include a Buenos Aires hotel night and flights between Buenos Aires and Ushuaia.132 The Seabourn fares are the lowest on each sailing, for a Veranda Suite, taxes and fees included, read October 15, 2026; both trips include a Buenos Aires hotel night and charter flights to Ushuaia.1217 The dates differ, so part of each gap is season, not length. Full prices by line are in how much an Antarctica trip costs, and the lowest fares in the cheapest way to Antarctica.

How many days should you plan in total?

Add your flights to South America and at least one spare day to the voyage length. Where the trip starts changes what the days include:

  • From Buenos Aires: HX, Seabourn and Viking voyages, and Quark's on Ultramarine, start with an included hotel night in Buenos Aires and an included flight to Ushuaia the next day.13123719 Lindblad's start with a transfer to its hotel in Buenos Aires or Santiago, and its recommended group flight to Ushuaia costs extra.145 Ponant puts the flight from Buenos Aires to Ushuaia at about 3 hours 30 minutes.39
  • From Ushuaia: Quark's Ocean Explorer trip and Aurora's include an Ushuaia hotel night on day 1, while Oceanwide's voyages board in Ushuaia in the afternoon of day 1.4401
  • From Punta Arenas or Puerto Natales: the fly-cruises include hotel nights in Chile before and after, and the flight days depend on the weather.6217

Because weather shortens some voyages and delays some flights, we would not book a nonrefundable flight home on the day a voyage ends. Leave a spare day after any fly-cruise.

How many days should you choose?

  • One week of leave: an 8-day fly-cruise, for 4 days in Antarctica.
  • First trip, best balance: 11 to 13 days by sea. Check the day-by-day and favor trips that list 5 to 7 days in Antarctica, not just the total.
  • Most time in Antarctica for the money: a 13-day or 16-day voyage, which adds days on the continent, not at sea.
  • South Georgia and the Falklands too: 19 to 23 days, for 4 to 6 days in Antarctica on most routes, about the same as an 11 to 13 day Peninsula trip, plus 3 to 7 days on the islands.
  • Crossing the Antarctic Circle: 13 to 16 days for the most time south, or 10 to 12 on the shortest trips.

The weather you will meet in those days is in Antarctica weather by month, and the best month to go is in the best time to visit Antarctica. Packing for any length of trip is in what to pack for Antarctica.
