How to choose an Antarctica cruise
How to pick an Antarctica cruise: ship size and landings first, then route, the Drake crossing, activities, comfort and price, with eight expedition ships compared and a pick for each traveler.
The short answer
Choose by ship size first: ships carrying more than 500 passengers may not land anyone, and no more than 100 people may be ashore at a site at once, so a ship of 200 or fewer lands everyone in two shifts. For most first-timers that means a 10 to 12 day Peninsula trip on such a ship. Then weigh the Drake crossing, activities, comfort and price.
Facts checked October 14, 2026 against 33 sources.
Choose an Antarctica cruise by ship size first, because size decides how much of the trip you spend ashore. For most first-timers the best Antarctica cruise is a 10 to 12 day trip to the Antarctic Peninsula on a ship carrying 200 passengers or fewer. After size, the choices that change the trip most are the route and length, whether you sail or fly the Drake Passage, the activities on offer, and only then comfort and price. This guide takes them in that order, prices eight departures with the fare basis spelled out, and ends with a pick for each kind of traveler.
What size ship is best for Antarctica?
A ship with 200 passengers or fewer is best for most travelers, because landing rules cap how many people can be ashore at once. Three layers of rules set those caps, and only one of them is enforced in practice.
- Treaty visitor guidelines. The Antarctic Treaty parties' General Guidelines for Visitors say only one ship may visit a site at a time, ships carrying more than 500 passengers shall not land anyone, and no more than 100 passengers from a ship may be ashore at once, fewer where a site's own guidance says so, with one guide for every 20 visitors.1
- Treaty Measure 15 (2009). It would require governments to impose the 500 and 100 limits on their tour operators, but it is still listed as not yet effective, with no approval recorded from 12 parties, including the United States, China and Germany.2
- IAATO bylaws. The limits are enforced through IAATO, the tour operators' association. Its members may not land anyone from a ship carrying more than 500, may not have more than 100 visitors ashore at a site (crew not helping with the landing count as visitors), must book every site through IAATO's Ship Scheduler so only one ship is there at a time, and on ships of 201 to 500 passengers "are to abide by stringent restrictions on time and place of landing activities". A member that breaks these rules can face IAATO's Compliance and Dispute Resolution Committee and sanctions by the membership.3
That last layer covers almost everyone: in 2025-26, 58 of the 59 passenger ships working in the Treaty area belonged to IAATO members, and the one that did not only cruised, without landing.4
IAATO sorts ships into groups: C1 carries 13 to 200 passengers and lands, C2 carries 201 to 500 and lands, CR carries more than 500 and only cruises, and YA covers yachts with up to 12 passengers.5 The practical effect is the number of shifts it takes to get everyone ashore. Divide the passenger count by 100 and round up.
| Ship | Operator | Passengers | IAATO group | Shifts of 100 to land everyone | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sylvia Earle6 | Aurora Expeditions | 130 | C1 | 2 | Smallest of the eight |
| National Geographic Endurance7 | Lindblad Expeditions | 138 | C1 | 2 | Small ship with a Polar Class 5 hull |
| Hondius8 | Oceanwide Expeditions | 170 | C1 | 2 | Small ship at a lower price |
| Ultramarine9 | Quark Expeditions | 199 | C1 | 2 | Right at the C1 ceiling, with two helicopters |
| Le Commandant Charcot10 | Ponant | 200 in Antarctica (245 in the Arctic)33 | C2 by capacity | 2 | Ponant caps Antarctic voyages at 200 guests |
| Seabourn Venture11 | Seabourn | 264 | C2 | 3 | Mid-size rules apply |
| Viking Octantis12 | Viking | 378 | C2 | 4 | Mid-size rules, four shifts |
| Fridtjof Nansen13 | HX Expeditions | 490 | C2 | 5 | Close to the 500 cutoff, five shifts |
Shift counts are our arithmetic from the 100-ashore limit; real landings also depend on weather, site rules and how many guests choose to go. HX gives Fridtjof Nansen's capacity as 490 on its ship page and as a maximum of 500 in its FAQ;1314 either way it is a C2 ship that needs five shifts. Every extra shift means more Zodiac shuttling, and either a shorter turn ashore for each group or fewer sites in a day.
Can you go to Antarctica on a regular cruise ship?
Yes, but you will see Antarctica only from the deck. IAATO expects seven big ships to run cruise-only Peninsula voyages in 2026-27, carrying about 26,238 passengers: Holland America's Oosterdam and Zaandam, Majestic Princess, Celebrity Equinox, Azamara Journey, and two ships from Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings, Oceania Insignia and Seven Seas Mariner.4 Holland America's 22-day South America and Antarctica cruise on Oosterdam from February 1, 2027 lists from $5,569 per person in an inside cabin, taxes and fees included,15 for a few days of scenic cruising inside a much longer South America voyage. It suits cruisers who want to see the ice and have no wish to stand on it. Everyone else should book an expedition ship.
How long should an Antarctica cruise be?
Ten to 12 days covers the Peninsula well; add a week or more for South Georgia and the Falklands. Most trips leave from Ushuaia in Argentina, with Punta Arenas in Chile and Montevideo in Uruguay the other main gateways.45 From Ushuaia, a typical sea route spends two days crossing the Drake each way and gives you four or five days in Antarctica.1617 Viking's 13-day trip from Buenos Aires lists seven days exploring Antarctica, with one day on the Drake each way.21 Longer trips trade money for range:
- Peninsula only, 10 to 13 days: the classic first trip, sold by all eight lines in the table above.
- Falklands, South Georgia and the Peninsula, 20 to 23 days: Quark's 20-day Ocean Explorer trip from October 25, 2026 lists from $28,595 per person in a triple suite at brochure price. Its 23-day Ultramarine trip from January 16, 2027 had sold out its $43,590 triple cabins; the next category up was $50,990 at brochure price.18
- Weddell Sea and the far south: Ponant's 14-day Le Commandant Charcot voyage into the Weddell Sea from October 27, 2027 lists from $32,770 per person after its 10% Ponant Bonus, but that cabin was sold out; the next was $33,360.19
If South Georgia matters to you, the longer trip is worth more than any cabin upgrade on a short one.
Should you sail or fly across the Drake Passage?
Sail if you have the time and want the lowest price per day; fly if you are short on days or dread seasickness. Fly-cruises use a charter of about two hours each way between southern Chile and King George Island, and the flights depend on weather at the island's gravel runway.20 In 2025-26, 11,764 of the 83,294 passengers on IAATO's Peninsula landing voyages went on air-cruises, about 14% by our arithmetic.4 Flying costs more per day. On Quark's World Voyager, a Veranda Suite lists at $20,695 for the 8-day fly-cruise leaving December 1, 2026, about $2,590 a day, against $21,890 for the 11-day sailing from December 18, about $1,990 a day (brochure fares, our arithmetic).18 Flying also skips the albatrosses and petrels of the open-ocean crossing. The full trade-off, with delay records and refund rules, is in fly or sail the Drake Passage.
Which activities are included, and which cost extra?
Landings and Zodiac cruising come with the fare; kayaking, camping and other extras are where lines differ, at anything from under $100 to about $2,000 per person each.141824 The differences are concrete:
- Viking includes kayaks, Zodiacs and its Special Operations Boats at no extra charge.21
- Quark charges $1,995 for sea kayaking and $995 for a helicopter landing on Ultramarine's March 10, 2027 Antarctic Explorer, while flightseeing is included. On October 14, 2026 both paid options showed no spots left.18
- HX includes landings and its science boat but charges for kayaking, snowshoeing and camping:14 on Highlights of Antarctica, $229 for a guided sea kayak outing, $91 for snowshoeing and $505 for a night in a tent, all booked on board.24
- Aurora built Sylvia Earle around add-on activities, from kayaking and diving to ski touring.6
- Seabourn sells kayaking as an optional excursion,22 and Seabourn Venture carries two six-person submarines.23
- Ponant lists kayaking, hiking or snowshoeing and a polar plunge on its Weddell Sea voyage.19
- Oceanwide offers cold-water diving on Hondius for $750, for divers with at least 30 dry-suit dives.17
If you plan to kayak, add the fee to the fare before comparing lines, and book it early, because spots are limited.
How much does an Antarctica cruise cost?
On the eight trips below, the lowest listed fares run from $8,83024 to $32,77019 per person. We took one trip per line, mostly on the ship in the table above, at the fare listed on October 14, 2026. Read the fare type before comparing: a promo fare, a sale fare, a brochure fare and a shared cabin are not the same thing.
| Line, ship and departure | Days | From, per person | Fare type | Included beyond the cruise | Per day |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| HX Highlights of Antarctica, Fridtjof Nansen, October 30, 202624 | 12 | $8,830 | Promo fare (was $10,589), two sharing | Buenos Aires hotel night, flights to and from Ushuaia | $736 |
| Oceanwide, Hondius, March 17, 202730 | 11 | $9,650 | Twin porthole cabin, per person | None: Ushuaia round trip | $877 |
| Viking Antarctic Explorer, Viking Octantis, February 8, 202726 | 13 | $14,999 | Sale fare to October 31, 2026 (standard $15,999) | Buenos Aires hotel night and charter to Ushuaia;21 US air $999 extra | $1,154 |
| Quark Antarctic Explorer, Ultramarine, March 10, 202718 | 12 | $15,590 | Brochure fare, triple cabin | Buenos Aires hotel night, charter flights | $1,299 |
| Aurora Spirit of Antarctica, Douglas Mawson, December 3, 202727 | 11 | $15,636 | After discounts (regular $18,395), twin share | Ushuaia hotel night | $1,421 |
| Lindblad Voyage to Antarctica, National Geographic Resolution, November 26, 202631 | 12 | $19,000 | Category 01, two sharing; sold out, and the cheapest open 2026-27 cabin on this trip was $27,252 | Santiago hotel night; no flights25 | $1,583 |
| Seabourn, Seabourn Venture, December 18, 202622 | 11 | $24,998 | Veranda suite, taxes included | Buenos Aires hotel, charter flights | $2,273 |
| Ponant, Le Commandant Charcot, October 27, 202719 | 14 | $32,770 | After 10% Ponant Bonus; sold out, next $33,360 | Land services tied to a charter flight | $2,341 |
Per-day figures are our arithmetic. Aurora's and Ponant's rows are 2027-28 departures; Aurora's lowest 2026-27 cabin still open was a triple at $17,096 on February 27, 2027.27 Lindblad's trip page says "from $13,500", but that is an October 15, 2027 departure;32 every 2026-27 departure of the trip starts at $19,000 or more.31 Ponant is cheaper on its other ships: a 12-day Peninsula trip on Le Boréal from December 10, 2026 is from $16,850 after the Ponant Bonus, with a Buenos Aires night and flights to Ushuaia included.28 For the whole budget, including flights and gear, see Antarctica trip cost.
Is an Antarctica cruise worth the money?
It is if most of the money buys days in Antarctica, so compare fares per day there, not per day aboard. Hondius's March 17 trip spends days 4 to 8 in Antarctica,30 so a twin porthole place works out at about $1,930 per Antarctic day. Viking lists seven days exploring Antarctica,21 about $2,143 a day at its sale fare before air.26 Both are our arithmetic. A cheap trip with long transits can cost more per Antarctic day than a dearer one with more time on site.
Can you find an Antarctica cruise under 5,000 dollars?
Not on any trip we priced. The cheapest way to see Antarctica was Holland America's $5,569 inside cabin, which never lands.15 The cheapest landing trips we found were a $7,800 shared berth on Hondius's March 17, 2027 departure, offered to women only on October 14, 2026,30 and HX's $8,830 promo fare for October 30, 2026.24 For other ways to cut the cost, see the cheapest way to Antarctica.
Are there Antarctica cruise deals?
Yes. Five of the eight lines in our price table showed a discount on October 14, 2026, so compare the price you can book, not the strikeout price:
- Quark shows promo codes worth 5% to 15% off its brochure fares, depending on the departure.18
- HX marks fares down for its 130th anniversary, and some departures carry a single waiver, meaning no solo supplement.24
- Viking's fall sale ends October 31, 2026, with free or reduced airfare on select Antarctic departures and savings of up to $6,000 per couple on select staterooms.26
- Aurora shows savings of up to 10% on some cabins.27
- Ponant fares already include a 10% Ponant Bonus.19
Is a balcony worth it on an Antarctica cruise?
For most first-timers, no: on small ships a balcony adds thousands of dollars, and the wildlife is seen from Zodiacs, landings and the open decks. On Hondius's January 6, 2027 trip, the last of the ship's six balcony suites8 cost $35,000 for two on October 14, 2026, against $23,800 for a twin porthole cabin, which had sold out.17 A Balcony Suite on Quark's March 10 Ultramarine trip lists at $39,580 for two at brochure price, with the charter flight included.18 Bigger ships make balconies standard: every one of Seabourn Venture's 132 suites has a veranda,29 so the $49,996 a couple pays on the December 18 sailing already includes one,22 and every stateroom category on Viking Octantis has a Nordic Balcony, a floor-to-ceiling glass wall whose top panel lowers.12 On Fridtjof Nansen, half the cabins have private balconies.13 More in Antarctica cruise balconies.
Are Viking, Seabourn and Silversea good for Antarctica?
Yes, if comfort ranks above time ashore. Viking Octantis carries 378 guests and Seabourn Venture 264, so both sit in IAATO's 201 to 500 group, with three or four landing shifts and tighter rules on when and where they land.31112 In return you get more included: kayaks at no extra charge on Viking,21 a veranda for every suite on Seabourn,29 and a Buenos Aires hotel and charter flights in Seabourn's fare.22 Viking's 13-day Antarctic Explorer starts at $14,999 per person on its sale and $15,999 at the standard fare;26 Seabourn's 11-day trip starts at $24,998.22 Silversea leans on flying: IAATO's 2026-27 estimates show 24 Silversea air-cruise voyages on Silver Endeavour, Silver Wind and Silver Cloud against 17 traditional sea voyages.4 If you want the most landings for your money, choose one of the four C1 ships instead.
What is the best month to cruise to Antarctica?
Late December to late January suits most first trips, at a premium; our best time to visit Antarctica guide sets out temperatures, daylight and wildlife month by month. Early in the season, November brings snow-covered landscapes and penguins courting and building nests.25 Late in the season is cheaper: on Hondius, a twin porthole place costs $11,900 per person on January 6, 2027 and $9,650 on March 17, about 19% less by our arithmetic.1730
Which cruise line is best for Antarctica?
There is no single best line, but there is a best fit for each kind of traveler:
- Most first-timers: a C1 ship of 200 or fewer on a 10 to 12 day Peninsula trip. Hondius is the value pick; National Geographic Endurance and Ultramarine cost more, and our Quark vs Lindblad comparison sets their two lines side by side. Not for travelers who want a balcony and a spa.
- Tightest budget: Hondius late in the season, or HX's Fridtjof Nansen on a promo fare if you accept five landing shifts and paid kayaking.2430 Not for anyone tied to peak-season dates.
- Solo travelers: Hondius sells single places in shared cabins, matched by gender, while a cabin to yourself costs 1.7 times the shared rate;30 HX waives the solo supplement on some departures.24
- Families: Lindblad, whose Explorers-in-Training program is built for kids and teens; children must be at least 4 on its Antarctic voyages.25 Not for families on a tight budget.
- Active travelers: Sylvia Earle for kayaking, diving and ski touring;6 Ultramarine for helicopter flightseeing.18 Not for budget travelers: the activities that set these ships apart are mostly paid extras.
- Comfort first: Seabourn Venture or Viking Octantis. Not for travelers who measure a trip in hours ashore.
- Far south and rare routes: Le Commandant Charcot into the Weddell Sea,19 or Quark's Ultramarine trips to the emperor penguins at Snow Hill.18
- Short on time or prone to seasickness: a fly-cruise, covered in our Drake guide above.
- Happy to look, not land: a big-ship cruise such as Holland America's, from $5,569.15
