Antarctic Peninsula
Planning an Antarctic Peninsula cruise: how long trips last, where ships land, the best month by temperature and wildlife, landing rules, ship sizes and starting fares.
What is the Antarctic Peninsula, and how do you visit it?
The Antarctic Peninsula is Antarctica's 800-mile (1,300 km) mountainous arm reaching toward South America, where 98% of tourist voyages go. The classic trip is an 11-day cruise from Ushuaia, Argentina: two days crossing the Drake Passage each way and four days of Zodiac landings among penguins, seals and whales. Ships sail October to April; December and January are best. 2026-27 fares start at $7,050, sharing a four-berth cabin.
Facts checked October 14, 2026 against 33 sources.

The Antarctic Peninsula is the northernmost arm of Antarctica, a mountainous, ice-covered strip that stretches 800 miles (1,300 km) toward South America; only a few percent of its land is free of ice.1 It is where Antarctic tourism happens. In 2025-26, 98% of tourist voyages operated in the Peninsula region, and most of them sailed from Ushuaia, Argentina.2
What is an Antarctic Peninsula cruise like?
A classic Peninsula cruise is a round trip of about 11 days from Ushuaia, with two days at sea each way across the Drake Passage and four days of landings and Zodiac cruising in between. Here is how Quark Expeditions lays out its 11-day Antarctic Explorer:
| Day | Where | What happens3 |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Ushuaia | Arrive; one hotel night is included |
| 2 | Beagle Channel | Board in the late afternoon and sail |
| 3 and 4 | Drake Passage | Lectures on wildlife, ice and history; seabirds from deck |
| 5 to 8 | South Shetland Islands and Peninsula | Daily Zodiac landings and cruising among penguins, seals and whales |
| 9 and 10 | Drake Passage | Crossing back north |
| 11 | Ushuaia | Disembark in the morning |
Air-cruises swap the sea days for a charter flight. Aurora Expeditions' 8-day Fly the Drake trip flies from Punta Arenas, Chile, to King George Island in about one hour and 45 minutes and spends days 3 to 6 on the Peninsula.4 The fly or sail guide weighs the two.
The three ways people saw the Peninsula with IAATO operators in 2025-26:
| Type of trip | Voyages | Passengers2 |
|---|---|---|
| Expedition ship, sailing both ways | 401 | 71,530 |
| Air-cruise, flying one or both ways | 126 | 11,764 |
| Large cruise ship, no landings | 15 | 27,217 |
That last row matters if you are comparing prices. IAATO classes ships carrying more than 500 passengers as cruise-only: they show you the scenery from the deck, but no one goes ashore.5
Where do Antarctic Peninsula cruises land?
Your expedition team picks landings day by day based on weather, ice and wildlife,4 usually from a list of established sites, each with its own Antarctic Treaty guidelines. These are some of the best known:
| Site | Area | Known for | Ship limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Half Moon Island | South Shetland Islands | Chinstrap penguins; Weddell and fur seals6 | 500 passengers on board |
| Deception Island | South Shetland Islands | Sailing into a volcano; whaling station ruins | Varies by site; Baily Head allows 200 on board7 |
| Cuverville Island | Errera Channel | An extensive gentoo colony, ice scenery, leopard seals hunting near shore8 | 500 on board; no more than 3 ships over 200 passengers a day |
| Neko Harbour | Andvord Bay | A landing on the continent itself; gentoos; calving glaciers9 | 500 on board |
| Jougla Point, Port Lockroy | Wiencke Island | Gentoos, blue-eyed shags, whale bones10 | 500 on board; 3 ships a day |
| Petermann Island | Penola Strait | Gentoo and Adélie penguins, blue-eyed shags11 | 500 on board; 3 ships a day, no more than 2 over 200 |
At Half Moon, Cuverville, Neko, Jougla Point and Petermann, no more than 100 visitors may be ashore at once, with one guide for every 20, and all five close to visitors from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m. so the wildlife can rest.6891011 Neko Harbour comes with a specific warning: after stepping ashore, head for higher ground, because the glaciers around the bay calve and can send waves up the beach.9
Port Lockroy, next to Jougla Point, is Base A, set up on February 11, 1944 during the secret wartime British mission Operation Tabarin. It is Historic Site and Monument No. 61 and receives up to 18,000 visitors a season.12 For 2026-27 the UK Antarctic Heritage Trust plans to run the museum, shop and Penguin Post Office alongside a major conservation program, next to a colony of more than 1,000 gentoos.13
Ice can overrule any plan. Researchers who followed Adélie colonies near Palmer Station from 1991 to 2016 note that weather and sea ice often kept their small boats from reaching the islands,14 so treat any named landing on an itinerary as a hope, not a promise.
What is the best month to visit the Antarctic Peninsula?
December and January are the best months for most travelers: the air is around freezing, penguin chicks hatch, and the Drake is at its calmest. November and February each trade something away. The table pulls together station temperatures, the penguin calendar and our Drake wave analysis.
| Month | Faraday/Vernadsky air temperature (west coast) | Esperanza air temperature (northern tip) | Penguin calendar (January to March are our estimates) | Drake average wave height |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| October | 26°F (−3.4°C) | 25°F (−4.1°C) | Adélies return to colonies in mid-October for courtship and nest building14 | 12.7 ft (3.9 m) |
| November | 29°F (−1.8°C) | 31°F (−0.7°C) | Adélies lay from about November 12;14 chinstraps lay in late November15 | 11.8 ft (3.6 m) |
| December | 32°F (−0.1°C) | 34°F (1.0°C) | Adélie chicks hatch around December 19 to 21;14 Palmer Station researchers run their peak gentoo and chinstrap egg census16 | 10.2 ft (3.1 m) |
| January | 34°F (0.9°C) | 35°F (1.4°C) | Adélie chicks crèche at about 20 days old;14 chinstrap and gentoo chicks hatch after 33 to 37 days of incubation1517 | 9.9 ft (3.0 m) |
| February | 34°F (1.0°C) | 34°F (1.1°C) | Gentoo chicks crèche at about 26 days old;17 chinstrap chicks, which fledge at 7 to 8 weeks, start leaving late in the month15 | 10.9 ft (3.3 m) |
| March | 32°F (0.1°C) | 30°F (−1.1°C) | Gentoo chicks, which fledge at 80 to 90 days, are close to leaving17 | 11.5 ft (3.5 m) |
Temperatures are 2011 to 2025 monthly averages, our calculation from British Antarctic Survey READER records for Faraday/Vernadsky18 and Esperanza.19 Penguin dates for October to December come from studies near Palmer Station. The January to March stages are our estimates: we added the Australian Antarctic Division's published incubation, crèche and fledging periods to those laying and hatching dates, so treat them as approximate to a week or two. Wave heights are from our ERA5 analysis of the Drake for 2010 to 2025.20
Whales follow a similar curve. In a 2019/20 survey from cruise ships, humpback numbers in the Bransfield and Gerlache Straits rose fast through December and had leveled off at a high by mid-January.21 Our pick: late December to mid-January for the best overlap of chicks, whales, warmth and calmer seas. Choose November for courtship and egg-laying, and accept a rougher crossing; choose February or March for bigger chicks, and accept that the Drake starts to roughen again. Our guide to the best time to visit Antarctica goes deeper on timing.
What is the weather like on the Antarctic Peninsula?
Cold but rarely bitter in the cruise season: summer air on the Peninsula hovers around freezing, from about 32°F to 35°F (0°C to 1.4°C) in December to February at the two stations above,18 and it is getting warmer. By our calculation from BAS records, the annual mean at Faraday/Vernadsky rose 5.1°F (2.84°C) between 1947 to 1956 and 2016 to 2025.18 Esperanza set the official record high for the Antarctic continent, 64.9°F (18.3°C), on February 6, 2020, and the World Meteorological Organization calls the Peninsula one of the fastest-warming regions on the planet.22 Of its 860 glaciers, 90% had retreated by 2010 compared with when they were first photographed about half a century earlier.1
What wildlife will you see on the Antarctic Peninsula?
Expect gentoo, chinstrap and Adélie penguins; Weddell, fur, crabeater and leopard seals; and humpback and minke whales, with a chance of orcas. That is the list Quark gives for its classic itinerary.3 Of the six landings in the table above, gentoos breed at four, chinstraps at the two in the South Shetlands, and Adélies at Petermann Island. Adélies are in steep decline on this coast: the population near Palmer Station has fallen about 90% since the 1970s.14 Our penguin species guide explains how to tell them apart.
Emperor penguins are not part of a normal Peninsula trip. Quark reaches the Snow Hill colony, which it puts at about 8,000 birds, on a dedicated 14-day voyage aboard Ultramarine with helicopter flights included.23 See the emperor penguin page for the other options. Trips that add South Georgia take much longer: Aurora's South Georgia and Antarctic Odyssey runs 21 days.24
Which ships are best for the Antarctic Peninsula?
Ships that carry 200 people or fewer give you the most time ashore, because every landing is capped at 100 visitors at a time. IAATO draws the same line: ships of 13 to 200 passengers are its traditional expedition class, 201 to 500 are mid-size, and over 500 are cruise-only.5 Here is what the expedition ships we cover carried on Peninsula voyages in 2025-26:
| Ship | Operator | Voyages | Passengers | Average per voyage |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sylvia Earle | Aurora | 11 (5 air-cruise) | 1,217 | 111 |
| National Geographic Endurance | Lindblad | 9 | 1,235 | 137 |
| Hondius | Oceanwide | 10 | 1,655 | 166 |
| Ultramarine | Quark | 11 | 1,913 | 174 |
| Le Commandant Charcot | Ponant | 6 | 1,108 | 185 |
| Seabourn Venture | Seabourn | 11 | 2,801 | 255 |
| Viking Octantis | Viking | 9 | 3,294 | 366 |
| Fridtjof Nansen | HX | 15 | 5,753 | 384 |
Voyage and passenger counts from IAATO; averages are our division.2
The arithmetic is simple. A ship averaging 110 to 185 passengers can put everyone ashore in two groups of up to 100; one averaging 366 to 384 needs four. More people per ship also closes doors: Baily Head on Deception Island admits only ships with 200 or fewer passengers on board,7 and Cuverville and Petermann limit how many ships over 200 may visit each day.811 Our pick for a first trip is a ship in the top five rows, unless budget or onboard comfort points you to a larger one; how to choose an Antarctica cruise and Quark vs Lindblad go further.
What are the rules for landing on the Antarctic Peninsula?
The Antarctic Treaty's visitor guidelines set the basics: ships carrying more than 500 passengers make no landings, only one ship may be at a site at a time, no more than 100 passengers go ashore at a site at once, fewer where the site's own guideline says so, and there is one guide for every 20. Ashore, keep at least 16 ft (5 m) from wildlife unless a site's own guidelines ask for more, and do not use aircraft or boats in ways that disturb it.25 IAATO members go further and do not allow recreational drones in coastal Antarctica at all.26
Those passenger limits are not yet binding treaty law. Measure 15 (2009), which would make them mandatory, is listed by the Antarctic Treaty Secretariat as "not yet effective": 17 countries had approved it when we checked, and 12, including the United States and China, had not.27 What enforces the limits in practice is IAATO, whose members account for 98% of Antarctic tourism. Its bylaws cap landings at 100 visitors ashore at a site at a time with one guide per 20, allow one ship at a site at a time, and keep ships of more than 500 passengers cruise-only, while the Treaty's site guidelines set the tighter limits at individual sites.2525
Why can't you sit or kneel in Antarctica?
Because of bird flu. IAATO now requires visitors near wildlife not to sit, squat, kneel or lie down, and not to put any equipment on the ground or snow.26 Plan your photography around it: no kneeling for eye-level penguin shots, and no setting your backpack down on the beach.
How much does an Antarctic Peninsula cruise cost?
Published 2026-27 fares for a sail-both-ways Peninsula trip start at $7,050 per person, for a shared four-berth cabin on a late-season voyage.30 Flying does not always cost more: Lindblad's 8-day fly-cruise starts at $12,600 including the required flights, below Quark's sailing fare, though that cabin was sold out and the cheapest open one cost $14,060.322933 These are the lowest fares we found on the operators' own pages, as listed on October 14, 2026:
| Trip | Days | Lowest 2026-27 fare per person | Basis |
|---|---|---|---|
| Oceanwide, Antarctica whale watching on Plancius, from Ushuaia | 10 | $7,050 | a berth in a shared four-berth cabin, March 26, 2027; the open berths were for women when read, and a shared twin berth for men cost $8,70030 |
| Oceanwide, Antarctica on Hondius, from Ushuaia | 11 | $7,800, or $9,650 in a twin | March 17, 2027; the one open four-berth place was for a woman when read30 |
| HX Highlights of Antarctica on Fridtjof Nansen, from Buenos Aires | 12 | $8,830 with a 130th-anniversary discount HX says is ending; $10,589 regular | two sharing, October 30, 2026; Buenos Aires hotel night and flights to Ushuaia included31 |
| Quark Antarctic Explorer, from Ushuaia | 11 | $14,895 brochure fare | triple suite, November 21, 2026, sold out when read; one Ushuaia hotel night included293 |
| Lindblad Antarctica Direct: Fly the Drake, from Puerto Natales | 8 | $12,600 | two sharing, November 25, 2026, sold out when read, with the cheapest open cabin $14,060; the required $3,000 flights included3233 |
| Quark Antarctic Express: Fly the Drake, from Punta Arenas | 8 | $19,695 brochure fare | Infinity Suite, December 1 and 6, 2026; charter flights and two Punta Arenas hotel nights included2928 |
The cheapest fares come from shared cabins and the end of the season. The same 11-day Hondius trip costs $9,650 in a four-berth cabin over the new year and $7,800 in mid-March,30 when our Drake analysis shows nearly one crossing in five meeting 20 ft (6 m) seas, against one in 25 in January.20 The low big-ship fares come with landings in shifts, as the ship table above shows. Our Antarctica trip cost guide adds flights, gear and tips, the cheapest way to Antarctica covers budget routes, and is a balcony worth it answers the cabin question.
Who should skip a Peninsula-only trip?
Skip it if emperor penguins are the goal, since they need a specialist voyage; if you dread the Drake and no fly-cruise fits your dates or budget; or if long, unhurried time ashore matters most to you and the only ship you can afford carries more than 350 people. For everyone else it is the natural first Antarctic trip, and the one 98% of tourist voyages make.2
