Is National Geographic Endurance a good ship for Antarctica?

Yes. Built in 2020 to Polar Code PC5, a stronger ice rating than Quark's or Oceanwide's ships, National Geographic Endurance is fully stabilized, has an X-Bow and carries 138 guests in 76 outside cabins, most with balconies; kayaking is included. Her 2026-27 Antarctic fares start at $19,968 per person, but that cabin was sold out and the cheapest open one cost $27,252.

Is National Geographic Endurance a good ship for Antarctica?

Yes. Endurance has the features that matter most on a polar voyage: a hull built to Polar Code PC5, the rating for year-round operation in medium first-year ice, full stabilization, an X-Bow, and 138 guests in 76 cabins that all face outside, most of them with a balcony.1234 She was the first new ship Lindblad built for polar work, named to honor Ernest Shackleton and his Transantarctic Expedition.2

The catch is cost and availability. Her 2026-27 Antarctic voyages start from $19,968 per person, but when we checked on October 14, 2026, her four Voyage to Antarctica departures had only one to six cabins left each, and the cheapest of those cost $27,252.4 We have not sailed on her; this page draws on Lindblad's published specs, deck plan and fares and on her builder's records.

Her builder records that after delivery she was converted in Denmark: the four foremost suites became eight cabins, which raised capacity from 126 to 138 guests.1 Her first voyage with guests left Reykjavik in July 2021.1 One small inconsistency: Lindblad's annual report lists 75 cabins, while its ship page and deck plan count 76.65

How strong is a PC5 ice class?

PC5 means a ship built for year-round operation in medium first-year ice that may include older ice; PC6, one step lower, covers summer and autumn operation in the same ice.3 Many expedition ships carry PC6, including Quark's Ultramarine and Oceanwide's Hondius.78 Lindblad calls PC5 "the highest ice class"; it is the highest among the ships compared here, but the scale runs up to PC1 for year-round operation in all polar waters, so Endurance is no icebreaker.23

In 2026-27 Lindblad uses Endurance alone for its longest Peninsula trip, the 16-day Quest for the Antarctic Circle, which aims to cross 66°33′ south.94

Does the X-Bow make the Drake Passage smoother?

Lindblad and the hull's designer say it does. Ulstein says the inverted bow meets waves more softly, reduces slamming and pitching, and cuts noise and vibration, and Lindblad adds that it reduces spray on deck.102 These are the makers' claims; we know of no independent study comparing X-Bow ships on the Drake Passage, and no hull design removes motion entirely.

If seasickness is your biggest worry, the ship matters less than the route. Endurance crosses the Drake by sea in both directions on every Antarctic trip; Lindblad's fly-cruises use National Geographic Explorer and National Geographic Orion instead.4 Our guide to flying or sailing the Drake weighs the two.

What do 138 guests mean for landings?

They mean landings in turns. IAATO, the Antarctic operators' association, allows no more than 100 visitors ashore at one site at a time, fewer where a site's guideline says so, and requires at least one guiding staff member for every 20 people ashore.11 With 138 guests, Endurance runs groups, as every Lindblad polar ship does. Her builder describes Zodiac boarding points aft and midships on both sides, designed to get everyone ashore quickly and safely.15 Lindblad says its staff-to-guest ratio across the fleet is no more than 1 to 16.12

Which cabin should you book on Endurance?

For 2026-27 in Antarctica, a balcony is what is left. On paper the window cabins in Categories 1 and 2 cost $5,230 to $6,231 less per person than the cheapest balcony on the December 2, 2026 departure, but every window cabin on every one of her 2026-27 Antarctic departures showed as sold when we checked; on her Svalbard trips some were still open.4 Fares below are per person with two sharing, for the December 2, 2026 Voyage to Antarctica:

Sizes and cabin counts come from Lindblad's cabin data; the layouts are from its deck plan.45 Categories 3 to 7 sleep three, which lowers the price for a third person: a Category 3 triple cost $21,832 per person on the same departure.4 Categories 6 and 7 add a welcome amenity, free laundry, priority for one igloo reservation and one spa appointment per voyage.5 On December 2 only one cabin, in Category 4, showed as available.4 For whether a balcony earns its price in polar waters, see our balcony guide.

What activities are included on Endurance?

Zodiac landings and cruising, kayaking, hiking and snowshoeing are included, and the ship carries cross-country skis for days on the sea ice early in the season.51314 Her other expedition tools are a remotely operated vehicle that films down to 1,000 feet (305 m), an underwater video camera, a hydrophone, an aerial camera and a video microscope.515

  • Photography: a National Geographic photographer on every departure, a certified photo instructor and an OM System locker with cameras and lenses to borrow.1312
  • People on board: a full-time doctor, an undersea specialist and a video chronicler.5
  • Comfort: two outdoor infinity hot tubs with igloos beside them, a glass-walled yoga studio, a gym, high- and low-heat saunas and three dining areas, including Restaurant 270° with wrap-around views.51
  • In the fare: drinks, including spirits, and crew gratuities; spa treatments and premium wines cost extra.13

Where does National Geographic Endurance sail in 2026-27 and 2027?

Endurance spends the southern summer in Antarctica and the northern spring and summer in the Arctic.4 Her polar trips, per person for two sharing, with the lowest published fare and the cheapest cabin still open when we checked:

The Antarctic trips board in Ushuaia and visit the Antarctic Peninsula; the 12- and 16-day trips begin with a hotel night in Buenos Aires, and the 22-day voyages add South Georgia and the Falklands.14916 The Svalbard trips start in Longyearbyen after a night in Oslo, except that Norwegian Discovery runs in both directions and Lindblad's booking data suggests the May 25 departure starts in Tromsø; the spring dates had the most open cabins when we checked.154 Between the seasons she also sails Patagonia in November 2026, western Europe in March 2027, and Iceland and Greenland from July 2027.4 None of these fares includes the flights to the ship: the group flights to Ushuaia and Longyearbyen are extra.1415

How does Endurance compare with Resolution and other polar ships?

National Geographic Resolution is her twin: built in 2021, 138 guests, PC5 and an X-Bow, named for Captain Cook's second voyage.176 In 2026-27 Resolution runs Voyage to Antarctica from Santiago rather than Buenos Aires, from $19,000, though that cabin was sold out on her November 26 departure and the only open one cost $31,630.144 Choose between the two by dates and gateway city, not by ship.

Quark's Ocean Explorer is the closest match: the same guest count and also an X-Bow, but a PC6 hull, and kayaking costs extra on Quark.1819 Ultramarine carries more guests but adds two helicopters.7 Aurora's Sylvia Earle is smaller, at most 130 guests, also on an X-Bow.20

Who should skip National Geographic Endurance?

  • Budget travelers. Her cheapest 12-day Antarctic fare works out to $1,664 per person per day, against about $1,509 for two sharing on Quark's similar-sized Ocean Explorer over 11 days, and both of those lead cabins were sold. On cabins still open the gap was wider: $27,252 for 12 days on Endurance against $18,495 for 11 days in a Veranda Suite on Ocean Explorer's November 21 departure, neither including the flight to Ushuaia.419 Our Antarctica trip cost guide lists cheaper ways south.
  • Anyone who wants everyone ashore at once. At 138 guests she is above IAATO's limit of 100 at a landing.11
  • Travelers set on helicopters or emperor penguins. Endurance carries no helicopters and has no emperor trip in 2026-27; see emperor penguins for the trips that do.54
  • Travelers who dread the Drake. She sails it both ways on every Antarctic trip; a fly-cruise on another ship avoids it.4

Our verdict

The pick for travelers who want a stronger ice rating than Quark's or Oceanwide's ships, a balcony and an inclusive fare on a 138-guest ship. She costs more per day than Quark's similar-sized Ocean Explorer, landings still rotate under IAATO's limit of 100 ashore, and her 2026-27 Antarctic voyages were close to full by mid-October 2026.

Best for: first-timers who want a modern stabilized ship, balcony seekers, kayakers, photographers, the Antarctic Circle, South Georgia, Svalbard in spring
