Is a balcony worth it on an Antarctica cruise?

What a balcony costs on eight real Antarctic ships, which ships include one in every cabin, and the sea days, scenic passages and cruise-only trips where it pays off.

The short answer

Usually not on an expedition ship, unless it costs little extra. On the eight ships we priced for 2026-27, the cheapest walk-out balcony listed at $600 to $5,230 more per person than the best cabin without one. You spend most Antarctic days ashore or in Zodiacs, and Quark warns that balcony doors may be locked on sea days. It pays off most on cruise-only ships that never land.

Facts checked October 14, 2026 against 28 sources.

A balcony is worth it on an Antarctica cruise only when it is cheap to add, or when you will spend your days on the ship. On most expedition ships you are off the ship by Zodiac for much of each Antarctic day, and on the Drake crossing the balcony door may be locked: Quark warns that Ultramarine's can be.20 On the eight ships we priced, the cheapest walk-out balcony cost $600 to $5,230 more per person than the best cabin without one.12 Pay up to about 10% more for one; above that, put the money into a longer trip or a better date.

Prices are per person in US dollars, for two sharing, as listed on October 14, 2026. Premiums are our arithmetic. Holland America's fares include taxes and fees; the rest are cruise fares as each line lists them.

How much more does a balcony cabin cost on an Antarctica cruise?

On most expedition ships the step up is $600 to $1,700 per person, about 3% to 9%.13 The exceptions are Hondius, where balconies come only with suites, Lindblad's National Geographic Endurance, and Holland America's big cruise ship.

National Geographic Endurance, December 2, 20262$20,969, category 02 with two large windows$26,199, category 03 with balcony$5,23025%

Availability matters as much as price. Both cabins we compared were sold out on the Sylvia Earle, Douglas Mawson and Endurance departures, as was World Voyager's Infinity Suite, so those premiums show how each line prices a balcony, not a choice you can still make on those dates.123 On Sylvia Earle, every cabin below the $27,595 Balcony Superior was gone.1 The cabins on Le Boréal, Ultramarine, Oosterdam and Hondius were still bookable.4356 Hondius has six balcony suites among its 80 cabins.7 On National Geographic Endurance, Lindblad's booking data lists categories 02 and 03 at the same 205 sq ft (19 m²), so the $5,230 buys the balcony alone; Lindblad furnishes those balconies with two chairs, a table and a hammock.288 And Ponant's early booking discount can scramble the order: on Le Boréal's February 5, 2027 trip the lower deck balcony was listed at $15,770 and the window stateroom at $18,000, both sold out.9

Which Antarctica ships have balconies in every cabin?

On a few ships you get a balcony at the entry fare, so the question answers itself.

  • Viking Octantis: every stateroom has a Nordic Balcony, a floor-to-ceiling glass wall whose top half lowers to make a sheltered open-air nook. Viking calls it "not traditional."10 A walk-out veranda comes only with the Explorer Suite, at $39,999 against $15,999 for the entry stateroom on the February 19, 2027 departure.1112
  • Seabourn Venture: all 132 suites have a veranda.13 The Veranda Suite measures 355 sq ft (33 m²) including a 75 sq ft (7 m²) veranda.14
  • Quark's Ocean Explorer: almost all cabins have balconies, and even the Triple Suite, its cheapest category, opens onto a walk-out balcony.15 It started at $14,895 per person on November 21, 2026, sold out.3
  • Le Commandant Charcot: every category has a private balcony or terrace. The departure we priced, October 27, 2027 into the Weddell Sea, started at $32,770 and that cabin was sold out.16

Fridtjof Nansen sits in between: all of its cabins face outward and half have private balconies.17

When does a balcony help in Antarctica?

A balcony earns its price on the days you stay aboard. There are three kinds.

Sea days. Quark's and Seabourn's 11-day sailings each spend four days crossing the Drake Passage: days 3, 4, 9 and 10 on Quark's itinerary18 and days 2, 3, 9 and 10 on Seabourn's.19 Your cabin is where you spend much of that time, and daylight and a view help. The catch is that Quark warns Ultramarine's balcony doors "may be locked during sea days or during inclement weather as a safety precaution."20 On a rough crossing, a walk-out balcony may be no more use than a big window.

Scenic cruising. Ships thread channels such as the Lemaire, which HX describes as 6.8 miles (11 km) long and 1 mile (1.6 km) wide,21 when ice allows.22 A balcony gives you a private, uncrowded rail for passages like this. It faces one side only, though, so in a narrow channel with peaks on both sides the open deck still shows you more.

Cruise-only trips. On a big ship that cannot land, every Antarctic hour is spent aboard. Oosterdam carries 2,388 passengers,23 and ships of more than 500 passengers make no landings,24 so its verandah is your private viewpoint for the whole Antarctic part of the trip. That is the strongest case for paying the balcony premium.

When is a balcony not worth it?

On a landing day you are rarely in your cabin. Quark plans Zodiac excursions from the ship each day at the Peninsula,18 and Seabourn schedules its Antarctic days from 7:00 am to 5:00 pm, with Zodiac cruises and walks ashore included.19 A balcony also often means less room inside:

  • On Ultramarine, the Balcony Suite is 226 sq ft (21 m²) with a 52 sq ft (4.8 m²) balcony, while the Explorer Suite with a picture window is 285 sq ft (26.5 m²).20
  • On World Voyager, the Veranda Suite is 215 sq ft (20 m²) with a 55 sq ft (5 m²) balcony, and the Infinity Suite, with a floor-to-ceiling Juliet balcony instead, is 270 sq ft (25 m²).25
  • On Le Boréal, the balcony stateroom is 193 sq ft (18 m²) plus a 43 sq ft (4 m²) balcony, against 226 sq ft (21 m²) for the window stateroom, which sleeps three.4

If you will mostly sleep, change and warm up in your cabin, that extra floor space may serve you better than a balcony.

What are the cabin types on an Antarctica cruise?

On the ships we priced, cabins run from cheapest to dearest roughly like this: shared cabins, porthole cabins, window cabins, French or Juliet balconies, walk-out balconies and suites. Hondius shows the typical mix in its 80 cabins: 4 quads and 2 triples with portholes, 27 twins with portholes, 14 with windows, 11 deluxe twins, 8 superiors, 8 junior suites and 6 grand suites with balconies.7 Aurora's Superior stateroom shows the halfway option: a French balcony and a full window, without a walk-out balcony.1 Fares for every category, including shared cabins, are in how much an Antarctica trip costs.

Worked example: a couple on Ultramarine

A couple booking Quark's 12-day trip on Ultramarine from Buenos Aires on March 10, 2027 would pay $36,180 for an Explorer Suite or $39,580 for a Balcony Suite, a difference of $3,400.3 Spread over 12 days, that is about $283 a day for the two of them. For it, they get a 52 sq ft (4.8 m²) balcony and give up 59 sq ft (5.5 m²) of cabin.20 The date matters far more: the same Explorer Suite costs $24,090 each on January 6, so the March trip saves $6,000 each, more than three times the balcony premium.3

On Hondius the sums are starker. Two people pay $20,200 in a twin window cabin on March 17 and $28,300 in a Grand Suite, $8,100 more.6 That is a suite with a sofa, refrigerator and coffee maker as well as the balcony,26 so you are paying for more than outdoor space.

Should you book a balcony for Antarctica?

  • Most expedition travelers: take the best window cabin and spend the difference on a longer trip or a quieter date, unless the balcony costs less than about 10% more. See how to choose an Antarctica cruise.
  • Couples who want a balcony without a premium: pick a ship where the entry suite has one, such as Seabourn Pursuit, where the Veranda Suite was $15,998 on March 13, 2027.2713 Not for tight budgets.
  • Families of three: Ocean Explorer's Triple Suite opens onto a walk-out balcony,15 from $15,095 per person on November 12, 2026.3 Not for families who want separate rooms.
  • Big-ship, cruise-only travelers: pay for the verandah, at $2,200 more on Oosterdam.5 It is your only private view of the Antarctic Peninsula.
  • Photographers: spend on the trip, not the cabin. A balcony shows one side of the ship, and the open deck shows both.
  • Budget travelers: skip it; the cheapest cabins with portholes still land you on the continent. See the cheapest way to Antarctica.
