What is the cheapest way to get to Antarctica?

The lowest 2026-27 fares on eight expedition lines, what triple and quad cabins and shoulder dates save, what last-minute deals really exist, and what the cheapest trips leave out.

The short answer

The cheapest way to set foot on Antarctica is a shared berth in a four-berth cabin on an Oceanwide ship late in the season: $7,050 on Plancius from March 26, 2027, or $7,800 on Hondius. A big cruise ship such as Holland America's Oosterdam starts at $5,569 but lands no one. Last-minute deals are sold online; we found no operator that documents walk-up sales in Ushuaia.

Facts checked October 14, 2026 against 35 sources.

The cheapest way to stand on Antarctica in 2026-27 is one berth in a shared four-berth cabin on an Oceanwide ship at the very end of the season. Plancius lists one at $7,050 for a 10-day Ushuaia round trip from March 26, 2027, and Hondius at $7,800 from March 17.1 Holland America's Oosterdam starts lower, at $5,569 with taxes and fees included, but it is a 22-day South America cruise that puts no one ashore.2

Every price here is per person in US dollars as listed on October 14, 2026. The cheapest cabins sell first, and several below were already sold out, which we note. For the full budget with flights and insurance, see how much an Antarctica trip costs.

What is the cheapest Antarctica cruise?

Oceanwide and HX are thousands of dollars below everyone else. This is the lowest fare we found for each of eight expedition lines, on any 2026-27 Peninsula departure.

Ponant835$15,770, after a 20% Ponant BonusLe Boréal, February 5, 2027; lower deck balcony, but every cabin on that sailing was sold out. The cheapest bookable fare we found was $16,850, a window stateroom on Le Boréal from December 10, 2026Buenos Aires night and flights to Ushuaia
Seabourn910$15,998Seabourn Pursuit, March 13, 2027; Veranda SuiteBuenos Aires hotel and charter flights
Aurora1134$16,595 regular, $14,106 on offerSylvia Earle, March 13, 2027; triple, sold out. The cheapest open 2026-27 cabin we found was a triple on the February 27 Spirit of Antarctica at $17,096 (regular $18,995)Ushuaia hotel night

The "included" column narrows the gap. HX's fare covers the Buenos Aires night and the flight south, which Quark prices at $1,295 when it packages them.6 Add that to Oceanwide's $9,650 twin berth on Hondius's 11-day March 17 trip and it comes to $10,945, more than the $10,599 regular fare for HX's 12-day March 9 trip, before Oceanwide's suggested tips.13

How much do triple and quad cabins save?

Sharing a cabin with more people cuts 8% to 19% off the twin price on the ships we checked, and with some lines you can book a single berth and be matched with strangers.14

  • Oceanwide, Hondius, March 17: a berth in a quad is $7,800 and in a triple $8,850, against $9,650 in a twin porthole cabin, about 19% and 8% less.1 Hondius has only four quads and two triples.12 Quads have two upper and two lower berths, so expect bunks.13
  • Quark, Ultramarine, March 10: the Explorer Triple costs $15,590 and the Explorer Suite $18,090, about 14% less for the same 285 sq ft (26.5 m²) cabin with a third bed.614
  • Lindblad, National Geographic Endurance, December 2: category 04 costs $22,710 each for three and $27,252 each for two, about 17% less.4

Solo travelers can use the same trick. Oceanwide sells single berths in twin, triple and quad cabins, always paired with guests of the same gender, at no supplement; a twin to yourself costs 1.7 times the shared rate.1516 Lindblad guarantees the per-person double rate to a solo guest willing to share, even if it finds no roommate, on certain ships and categories.17 Oceanwide also offers children under 16 sharing with their parents a 40% discount in quads, triples and some higher cabins, on request.1

Is it cheaper to go to Antarctica early or late in the season?

Both ends of the season are cheaper than the Christmas to mid-January peak, often by a quarter or more. Comparing the same cabin on the same ship:

Line and cabinPeak departureShoulder departureSaving
Lindblad, Resolution, category 014$30,200, December 26$19,000, November 26About 37%
HX, Fridtjof Nansen, regular fare3$16,473, December 9$10,589, October 30About 36%

Quark, Ocean Explorer, Triple Suite6$18,395, January 5$14,895, November 21About 19%

Savings are our arithmetic, and several of these cabins were sold out, including both Lindblad fares and Quark's November 21 Triple Suite, so read them as the price pattern, not as offers.46 What changes is the wildlife calendar: HX describes October and November as courtship and nesting time for penguins, December and January as hatching, and February and March as peak whale watching.3 A late-March trip trades chicks for whales; a late-October trip trades them for courtship and nest building. Month-by-month detail is in when to visit Antarctica.

Can you get a last-minute Antarctica cruise deal in Ushuaia?

Last-minute deals are real, but the ones we can document are sold online, not on the dock. Oceanwide runs a last-minute page that says it gives "the best price on last-minute departures," and on October 14 it listed an 11-day Plancius trip over New Year from $9,500, marked "Up to $2850 OFF."18 Aurora's last-minute page files Spirit of Antarctica under December departures, "Save up to 15%", from $15,636 against $18,395.19 That headline is the lowest price across all its dates: it matches only two December 2027 departures, and on the December 29, 2026 sailing no discount showed and only the $27,595 Balcony Superior and suites were still open.34

We found no operator or IAATO page that documents walk-up sales in Ushuaia, and no official Argentine source we could cite, so we cannot tell you how often unsold berths are sold in town or at what price. Three rules make the gamble harder than it sounds:

  • Viking requires a medical assessment, signed by a physician, between 120 and 45 days before an Antarctic departure.20
  • Quark asks every passenger for a medical form, and a second form signed by a doctor if you have a listed condition or take prescription drugs.21
  • Oceanwide makes medical and evacuation insurance mandatory, with at least 100,000 euros or dollars of cover for Antarctica.2223

Flying to Ushuaia on spec also means paying for flights and hotel nights with no berth promised. Booking early is the documented discount, though not always for this season. Quark's early booking bonus of up to $2,000 plus 10% applies only to its newly launched 2028 Arctic and 2028-29 Antarctic voyages booked by October 31, 2026, and is $1,000 on trips of 14 days or less.24 Ponant's early booking bonus is up to 30% off the standard fare, shrinking "as the cruise fills."25

Is a big cruise ship the cheapest way to see Antarctica?

It was the cheapest way we found to see it, but not to set foot on it; Holland America was the only big-ship line we priced. Its 22-day South America and Antarctica cruise on Oosterdam from February 1, 2027 shows an inside cabin from $5,569 with taxes and fees included, about $253 a day, sailing from Buenos Aires to San Antonio, Chile, with days of scenic cruising listed as "Antarctic Experience."2 Nothing we priced for 2026-27 cost under $5,000; Holland America's 2027-28 trips on Nieuw Amsterdam come closest, from $5,119.2 Oosterdam carries 2,388 passengers.26 The Antarctic Treaty's 2009 measure on ship tourism, though not yet in force, and IAATO's own rules both keep ships of more than 500 passengers from landing anyone,2728 so you watch the ice from the deck. That is still a popular choice: IAATO counted 27,217 cruise-only visitors in 2025-26.29 It suits cruisers who want the scenery and a long trip for the money, and it does not suit anyone who wants to walk among penguins.

What do you give up on the cheapest trips?

The cheapest berths cost you privacy, comfort and some of the season, not the landings themselves. Oceanwide includes all Zodiac shore excursions in every fare.13 What you lose:

  • Privacy: a shared berth means a cabin with strangers of your own gender,15 and bunks in a triple or quad.13
  • A newer ship: Plancius was built in 1976 as a Dutch Navy oceanographic research ship, rebuilt as a passenger ship in 2009, and carries 108 passengers in 50 cabins.30
  • Flights and hotels: Oceanwide's fare excludes all airfare and land arrangements.13
  • Free extras: on Hondius's New Year voyage, a one-off kayak outing is $300 and a night of camping $280.1 Its Basecamp departures include camping, kayaking and mountaineering at no charge, from $10,150 for 13 days on Hondius in late November.1
  • Peak wildlife timing: the cheapest dates fall outside the December and January hatching season.3

Worked example: the cheapest landing trip for one traveler

Here is what one person traveling alone from the US would pay on Oceanwide's cheapest dates. We price the Buenos Aires night and flight to Ushuaia at Quark's $1,295 package rate and the flight from the US at Viking's standard $1,499 air price, the only published benchmarks we found.67

Cost for oneWoman, Plancius quad berth, March 26 (10 days)Man, Plancius twin berth, March 26 (10 days)Either, Hondius twin berth, March 17 (11 days)
Cruise fare1$7,050$8,700$9,650
Buenos Aires night and flight to Ushuaia$1,295$1,295$1,295
Tips at $10 to $15 a day31$100 to $150$100 to $150$110 to $165
Flight from the US$1,499$1,499$1,499
Total$9,944 to $9,994$11,594 to $11,644$12,554 to $12,609

The availability on October 14 decided the first two columns: Plancius had two quad berths left for women and one twin berth for a man.1 Add travel insurance, which Oceanwide requires and none of these lines prices on its site. Two people sharing should also price HX. Its October 30 fare already includes the Buenos Aires night, the flight to Ushuaia and tips, so the same $1,499 flight brings it to $12,088 each at the regular $10,589 fare, or $10,329 at the $8,830 promotional fare, against $12,554 to $12,609 for the Hondius twin above.3

Can you go to Antarctica for free?

Not as a tourist. The US Antarctic Program sends roughly 3,000 people a year, mostly between October and February: scientists, station support staff, the military, and selected artists, writers, educators and journalists. It does not carry tourists or offer "space-available" seats on its flights, and says sightseers must book with a private tour company.32 The realistic way to go without paying a fare is to work there: the program's support staff, including seasonal contractors at US research stations, are hired under the Antarctic Support Contract, though not every position goes to Antarctica.32

Can you fly to Antarctica cheaply?

Yes, several lines sell fly-cruises, but flying costs more than sailing. Lindblad's 8-day fly-cruise from Puerto Natales starts at $12,600 with $3,000 of that for the required flights, though that cabin was sold out and the cheapest open one cost $14,060,4 and Quark's 8-day fly-cruise from Punta Arenas starts at $19,695.6 The comparison is in fly or sail the Drake Passage, and the Drake Passage page covers the crossing you would skip.

Which cheap Antarctica option should you pick?

  • Solo, flexible on dates: a shared Oceanwide berth in late March.1 Not for anyone who needs a cabin to themselves.
  • A couple: HX's shoulder-season fares, which already include the Buenos Aires hotel, the flight to Ushuaia and tips.3 Not for travelers who want a ship of under 200 passengers; Fridtjof Nansen is in IAATO's 201 to 500 passenger category.33
  • A family of three or four: a triple or quad on Oceanwide or Quark's Explorer Triple on Ultramarine.6 Not for families who want separate rooms.
  • Activities on a budget: an Oceanwide Basecamp voyage with camping and kayaking included.1 Not for travelers who only want to walk and watch wildlife, who would pay for activities they skip.
  • Seeing Antarctica, not landing: Holland America's Oosterdam.2 Not for anyone who wants to stand on the Antarctic Peninsula.

If you can stretch the budget, how to choose an Antarctica cruise compares ships beyond price.
