Is Lindblad Expeditions good for Antarctica?

Yes, if expert guiding and an inclusive fare (drinks, kayaking, crew tips) matter more than price. Lindblad has run expeditions since 1979 and sends four ice-class ships of 102 to 148 guests to Antarctica. Its 2026-27 fares start at $12,600 per person for an 8-day fly-cruise with flights, but that cabin was sold out; open cabins started at $14,060. Skip it for helicopters, emperor penguins or a tight budget.

Is Lindblad Expeditions good for Antarctica?

Yes, for travelers who want expert naturalist guiding and a fare that covers most extras, and who can pay a premium for both. Lindblad has run expedition voyages since 1979, joined IAATO (the Antarctic operators' association) in 1997, is a full member of AECO (its Arctic counterpart), and in 2026-27 sends four ice-class ships of 102 to 148 guests south.1235

Two things set it apart. Its owned ships sail under the National Geographic name through a brand agreement that began in 2004 and now runs through 2040, and National Geographic sells Lindblad trips through its own travel division.3 And on its four polar ships the fare covers drinks, crew gratuities and the use of kayaks, with a National Geographic photographer on board.4

The trade-offs are price and availability. Lindblad tells its investors it keeps "premium pricing" instead of the discounting common among mainstream cruise lines, and its ships sailed 88% full in 2025, counting two guests per cabin.3 For 2026-27, the cheapest cabin category was sold out on every Antarctic departure but one when we checked.5 We have not sailed with Lindblad and found no guest review score on its site; its annual report says about 40% of its guests have sailed with it before.3

Who owns Lindblad, and which ships go to Antarctica?

Lindblad Expeditions Holdings is listed on Nasdaq as LIND, with headquarters in New York and its ship operations office in Seattle.3 Lars-Eric Lindblad took the first tourists to Antarctica in 1966; his son Sven-Olof Lindblad founded the company in 1979 as Special Expeditions, and it became public through a merger in July 2015.6173 The group also owns land-tour brands such as Natural Habitat Adventures.3

Lindblad owns 12 ships and charters 10 more. Four of the owned ships sail to Antarctica in 2026-27:35

Endurance and Resolution are sisters with X-Bow hulls and 76 cabins each.95 Explorer began life on Norway's Hurtigruten coastal route.10 Lindblad calls PC5 "the highest ice class"; it is a strong rating for an expedition ship, but the Polar Class scale runs up to PC1.830

How much does a Lindblad National Geographic cruise to Antarctica cost?

Lindblad's 2026-27 Antarctic fares start at $12,600 per person for the 8-day fly-cruise, flights included, and $19,000 for the 12-day voyage by sea, but both lead-in cabins were sold out; what you could still book on October 14, 2026, started at $14,060 and $27,252.5 All fares are per person with two sharing:

"Lead fare" is the cheapest category on the cheapest departure, the figure Lindblad advertises; "cheapest open cabin" is the lowest two-person fare in any category that still showed a cabin, often the last one.5 The per-day column is our arithmetic. Two longer trips, an 18-day Antarctica and Patagonia voyage and a 25-day Odyssey, start at $20,000 and $79,000.5 Three more things move the price:

  • Holiday dates cost more. Endurance's December 22 Voyage to Antarctica starts at $30,205.5
  • The flight to Ushuaia is extra on the sea voyages. Their fares say "Does not include any flights", and the day 2 group flight from Buenos Aires or Santiago is added when you book.12
  • A third person lowers the price. Three sharing a Category 3 cabin on the November 25 Fly the Drake paid $9,217 each plus $3,000 in flights, $12,217 in all, and one such cabin was still open.5

Lindblad also gives up to $2,000 per person in air credit on select 2027 departures, including the January and February Voyage to Antarctica and Quest for the Antarctic Circle sailings, if you book by November 4, 2026, live in the US or Canada and buy your flights through its air department; the credit does not cover the required Fly the Drake flights.295 If your dates are flexible, look a year ahead: for 2027-28 Voyage to Antarctica starts at $13,500 (Resolution, October 15, 2027) and Quest for the Antarctic Circle at $19,700.5 For a full budget, see what an Antarctica trip costs and the cheapest way to Antarctica.

Are National Geographic cruises worth the money?

They are if you will use what the fare includes and can still find a cabin. At lead-in fares for two sharing, Lindblad's 12-day voyage costs $1,583 a day against $1,509 for Quark's 11-day Antarctic Explorer, but Quark charges $1,995 for sea kayaking, which Lindblad includes, and leaves gratuities to you; add the kayaking and Quark's trip comes to about $1,690 a day.51314 Both of those lead cabins were sold out, though. Among cabins shown as open, Quark's Antarctic Explorer had two-person cabins at $18,490 for 11 days with a Buenos Aires hotel night and charter flights to Ushuaia, against $27,252 for Lindblad's 12-day voyage without the flight, so for 2026-27 Quark is cheaper even for a kayaker.135 The National Geographic name buys photographers and naturalists on board, not more time ashore: both lines land under the same IAATO limits.415

What is included in a Lindblad expedition?

On the four polar ships the fare covers your cabin and meals, beer, wine, cocktails and spirits (premium brands extra), crew gratuities, the use of Zodiacs, kayaks and stand-up paddleboards, a basic Wi-Fi plan, park fees and port taxes, and the hotels and excursions shown in the itinerary.4 Flights, travel insurance, laundry, spa treatments, premium wines and faster Wi-Fi cost extra; on the fly-cruises the required charter flights are added to the fare.45 Also included:

  • A National Geographic photographer on board Endurance, Resolution, Explorer and Orion, a certified photo instructor, and an OM System camera locker with gear to borrow.4
  • A parka or jacket on select Arctic and Antarctic voyages.4
  • On the Fly the Drake trips, hotel nights in Puerto Natales, plus an extra night there if the flight south is delayed.16

Lindblad's air department books flights for $50 per person.17 Children must be at least 4 on all Antarctic, Svalbard, Greenland and Iceland voyages, and Voyage to Antarctica runs a family program, National Geographic Explorers-in-Training.2312

Solo travelers can book solo cabins on every Lindblad expedition, or join a roommate-matching program and pay the per-person double rate whether or not a roommate turns up.17 Solo cabins cost more: on the April 23, 2027 Svalbard departure a solo cabin on Endurance started at $24,750, against $15,230 per person in the cheapest open double.5

How many guests go ashore at once with Lindblad?

No more than 100 at one landing site at a time, fewer where a site's guideline says so, under IAATO's rules, so on all four Lindblad polar ships guests land in turns.15 IAATO also requires at least one guide ashore for every 20 visitors, allows one ship at a site at a time and bars ships carrying more than 500 passengers from landing at all.15 Lindblad says its staff-to-guest ratio across the fleet is no more than 1 to 16.17 Orion, with 102 guests, comes closest to putting everyone ashore together.

Is Lindblad a luxury cruise line?

It prices like one but runs its ships as expedition vessels. Dining is at unassigned tables rather than fixed seatings, the bridge is open to guests, and Endurance gives space to a science hub, a broadcast studio and a photo workshop.1019 The top cabins are large: Endurance's eight Category 7 suites measure 430 square feet (40 square meters).5 If suite service matters more to you than naturalists, compare a luxury line such as Seabourn.

Which Lindblad Antarctica trip should you book?

Choose by how much time you have and how you feel about the Drake Passage:

  • Short on time or worried about seasickness: Antarctica Direct: Fly the Drake Passage, 8 days from Puerto Natales on Explorer, or 9 or 10 days on Orion, with a charter flight of about two hours each way to King George Island.18516 Be at the Puerto Natales hotel by 3 p.m. on day 1; if the flight cannot leave by 2 p.m. on day 3, Lindblad cancels the trip and refunds the cruise fare and internal air, but helps rebook international flights only if its air department sold them.16 Checked bags are limited to one of 44 lb (19.9 kg).16 Our guide to flying or sailing the Drake weighs the choice.
  • One crossing by sea: Antarctica Direct: Sail and Fly the Drake Passage, 10 days, sails south from Ushuaia and flies back to Puerto Natales; Lindblad also lists the route in reverse.20
  • The classic trip: Voyage to Antarctica, 12 days, with five days planned on the Antarctic Peninsula and two days at sea each way, on Resolution from Santiago or Endurance from Buenos Aires.12
  • The longest look at the Peninsula: Quest for the Antarctic Circle, 16 days on Endurance in January 2027, with nine days in Antarctica and an attempt to cross 66°33′ south.215
  • South Georgia: Antarctica, South Georgia, and the Falklands, 21 or 22 days. Two of the four 2026-27 departures were fully sold; Resolution's November 6 sailing and Endurance's February 8 sailing, which runs the route in reverse, still had a few cabins.5 The itinerary includes a toast to Shackleton at his grave on South Georgia, and October and November departures may park the ship in fast ice for a walk on the frozen sea.22
  • Emperor penguins: none of Lindblad's 2026-27 ship departures is built around them.5 White Desert, in Lindblad's family of brands, flies guests to an emperor colony inland.7 For a ship-based attempt, look at Quark Expeditions and its Snow Hill trip.

When does Lindblad sail to Antarctica?

Lindblad's 2026-27 Antarctic departures run from October 30, 2026, to a final return on March 10, 2027.5 Voyage to Antarctica leaves between late November and early February, both Antarctic Circle trips leave in January, and the South Georgia voyages sail at the start and the end of the season.5 For what each month brings, read the best time to visit Antarctica.

What are Lindblad's booking and cancellation terms?

Lindblad takes an advance payment of 15% of the cabin fare when you book and wants the balance 120 days before departure.23 For bookings made since May 1, 2023, cancellation costs:

When you cancel24Charge per person
120 days or more before the startNo fee; the advance payment becomes a travel certificate valid 12 months, not a refund
119 to 90 days50% of the trip cost
89 days or less100% of the trip cost

Trip cost here includes extensions and charter flights, and Lindblad says some longer voyages and holiday departures carry different terms.24 Because the balance is not due until 120 days out, cancelling before then puts only the 15% advance payment at risk, and it comes back as a credit.2324 Insurance is still worth having on any polar booking.

Does Lindblad go to the Arctic and Svalbard?

Yes. National Geographic Endurance sails Svalbard from April to early July 2027. The 10-day trip starts with a hotel night in Oslo and a group flight to Longyearbyen that costs extra, and a 16-day trip, Norway's Fjords and Arctic Svalbard, combines the Norwegian coast with Svalbard from April 10, from $35,055.255

Svalbard, Iceland and Greenland's East Coast16Jun 24$25,900 (sold out)$33,990

The spring Svalbard dates had far more open cabins than the Antarctic ones: 32 of Endurance's 76 on April 23.5 Lindblad calls Svalbard one of the best places on the planet to see polar bears and stops short of promising a sighting.25

How does Lindblad compare with Quark and Aurora?

Quark Expeditions is the closest rival and the stronger choice for helicopters, emperor penguins and a 2026-27 cabin you can still book: its Ultramarine carries two helicopters and runs the Snow Hill emperor trip, Lindblad offers neither, and Quark's entry fare is $14,895 per person in a triple, though that cabin was sold out on its November 21 date.26135 Lindblad is the cheaper way to fly over the Drake: Quark's 8-day fly-cruise starts at $19,695.13

Aurora Expeditions sails smaller ships. Its Sylvia Earle carries at most 130 guests, and sea kayaking is extra, from $1,350 on its 2026-27 Wild Antarctica trip.2728

Who should skip Lindblad?

  • Tight budgets. The cheapest open cabins on 2026-27 Voyage to Antarctica departures started at $27,252 per person, and Lindblad does not chase bookings with deep discounts.53
  • Helicopter or emperor penguin hunters. None of Lindblad's polar ships lists helicopters among its expedition tools, and none of its 2026-27 sailings targets emperors.1935
  • Travelers who want everyone ashore at once. Its smallest polar ship carries 102 guests, just over IAATO's limit of 100 at a landing.1115
  • Late planners without insurance. Inside 120 days you lose half the trip cost, and inside 90 days all of it.24 How to choose an Antarctica cruise covers the alternatives.

Our verdict

A premium, inclusive choice built around expert guiding, with a National Geographic photographer on board, kayaking, drinks and crew gratuities in the fare, and the PC5 sister ships Endurance and Resolution. For 2026-27 its sea voyages were nearly full and the cabins still open cost far more than Quark's, so book a year ahead or take its fly-cruise, which undercuts Quark's.
