When is the best time to visit Antarctica?

Antarctica month by month, October to March: temperatures, daylight, sea ice, penguin and whale timing, fares and crowds, with the best month for each kind of traveler.

The short answer

Late December to late January is the best time for most travelers. Penguin chicks are hatching, humpback whales have arrived in force, mean air temperatures at Peninsula stations run 32°F to 35°F (0°C to 2°C) and the sun is up 18 hours or more a day. Pick November for snow and nesting penguins, or late March for lower fares: 19% below January on one ship we priced.

Facts checked October 14, 2026 against 21 sources.

Late December to late January is the best time for a first visit to the Antarctic Peninsula, where almost every Antarctic cruise goes. It is the warmest part of the season, the nights never get fully dark, penguin chicks are hatching and humpback whales have arrived in numbers. It is also the busiest and most expensive stretch. November and March are the two strong alternatives, for different reasons, so match the month to what you most want to see.

The season is short. IAATO, the tour operators' association, says 98% of tourist voyages go to the Peninsula region during an October to April season, mostly from Ushuaia.1 In 2025-26, landings ran for about 164 days, from October 19 to April 1, and no tourist ship landed anyone outside that window.2

Antarctica month by month, October to March

Each row below is one month at the Peninsula. Temperatures are 24-hour monthly means at the Faraday/Vernadsky research station for 1991 to 2020, our calculation from the British Antarctic Survey's READER station records. Daylight is sunrise to sunset at Port Lockroy on the 15th, from the US Naval Observatory. Fares are Viking's 13-day Antarctic Explorer for the 2027-28 season, per person in a double, as listed on October 14, 2026 under a sale that ends October 31, 2026.

Antarctica in October

October is for travelers who want the first landings of the year and can take the cold. Faraday averages 25°F (-4.0°C),3 and Rothera, south of the Antarctic Circle at 67.5°S, 23°F (-5.0°C).7 Antarctic sea ice reaches its yearly maximum in September,5 so October trips meet more of it than any later month. Chinstrap penguins return to their colonies in October and November.8 In 2025-26 the first landing came on October 19,2 so an October trip really means the last third of the month.

Antarctica in November

November suits travelers who want snow and sea ice underfoot and the start of the breeding season. Faraday averages 29°F (-1.7°C),3 and the sun is up 18 hr 30 min at Port Lockroy on November 15.4 Adélie penguins have two eggs in the nest by mid-November,9 and chinstraps lay theirs in late November.8 Some bays are still frozen: Lindblad advertises cross-country skiing and snowshoeing on sea ice for early November departures, conditions permitting.10 Viking's November 2027 sailings start at $15,999 to $16,499, with its airfare offer shown as free.6

Antarctica in December

December brings hatching chicks and the longest days of the year, with Faraday's mean right at freezing, 32°F (-0.1°C).3 On December 21 the sun is up 21 hr 50 min at Port Lockroy and does not set at all at the Antarctic Circle; on every date we checked from December 15 to January 15, civil twilight never ended at Port Lockroy, so the sky never got properly dark.4 Adélie chicks hatch in December.9 Humpback whales arrive fast: a survey run from cruise ships estimated 4,124 humpbacks in the Bransfield and Gerlache Straits in early December 2019 and 19,107 by late December.11 Berths go fast. On October 14, 2026, six of the eight Viking Antarctic Explorer departures between December 4 and January 13 were sold out, and the two still open, over Christmas and New Year, had only a few cabins left, from $17,999.6

Antarctica in January

Yes, January is a good time to go to Antarctica, and for most people the best. It is the warmest month of the cruise season at Faraday and Rothera and ties with February at Bellingshausen, the northernmost of the three stations, with means of 34°F to 35°F (1.1°C to 1.6°C).3712 Adélie chicks are about three weeks old and gather in groups while both parents fish.9 Humpback numbers in the same survey held steady at about 18,662 by mid-January.11 The catch is price and demand. A 10-night Ushuaia round trip on Oceanwide's Hondius leaving January 6, 2027 lists from $9,650 per person for a berth in a shared four-berth cabin, but on October 14, 2026 every cabin on it was sold out except one balcony suite at $35,000.13

Antarctica in February

February is the month for well-grown chicks and whales, with January's warmth and less demand. Adélie chicks swap their down for adult feathers and go to sea at 7 to 9 weeks old,9 and chinstrap chicks fledge at about 7 to 8 weeks.8 Faraday still averages 34°F (1.0°C),3 while the sun is up 16 hr 6 min at Port Lockroy on February 15.4 Sea ice keeps shrinking toward its yearly low in March.5 On October 14, 2026, every February 2027 Viking sailing still had cabins at its $14,999 sale fare, though in limited numbers.6

Antarctica in March

March is the cheapest month on both lines we priced, though Viking charges the same for a few November and February sailings, and it is still a good month for whales. Colonies begin to empty: chinstraps leave between March and early May,8 while gentoo chicks fledge later, at 80 to 90 days old.14 Humpbacks keep feeding in the Peninsula's bays into autumn; one study counted about 13 whales per square mile (5.1 per km²) in Wilhelmina Bay in May 2009.15 The sun is up 12 hr 50 min at Port Lockroy on March 15,4 and Faraday's mean falls back to 32°F (-0.1°C).3 On Hondius, a comparable 10-night Ushuaia round trip lists from $9,200 on March 716 and $7,800 on March 17, 2027, a shared berth offered only to women when we checked.17

How cold is it on an Antarctica cruise?

Expect air temperatures close to freezing. Across the cruise season, monthly means at three Peninsula stations run from 23°F (-5.0°C) in October to 35°F (1.6°C) in January and February.3712 These are averages over day and night, so afternoons on a calm, sunny day feel milder and windy days colder. October is the coldest month of the season, and the far south is colder than the north: Rothera is colder than Bellingshausen in every month from October to March, by about 4°F (2.4°C) in October.712

MonthBellingshausen, 62°S12Faraday/Vernadsky, 65°S3Rothera, 67.5°S7
October27°F (-2.6°C)25°F (-4.0°C)23°F (-5.0°C)
November30°F (-1.1°C)29°F (-1.7°C)28°F (-2.3°C)

March33°F (0.5°C)32°F (-0.1°C)30°F (-0.9°C)

These are 1991 to 2020 means we calculated from each station's monthly records. The most recent ten years, 2016 to 2025, ran within about 2°F (1.1°C) of them in every month; the biggest change was October at Faraday and Rothera, about 2°F (1°C) warmer.3712

Which is the coldest month in Antarctica?

July or August, depending on the station, and no tourist ship visits then. Over 1991 to 2020, July averaged 21°F (-6.0°C) at Bellingshausen and 14°F (-9.8°C) at Rothera, and August 20°F (-6.9°C) at Faraday/Vernadsky, by our calculation from the same records.1273 Within the cruise season, October is the coldest month at all three.

How many hours of daylight are there in Antarctica in January?

On January 15 the sun is up 18 hr 40 min at King George Island, 19 hr 52 min at Port Lockroy and 21 hr 8 min at the Antarctic Circle.4 Even at King George Island the darker part of the night, after civil twilight ends, lasts under two hours. Daylight then falls quickly: by March 15 all three get just under 13 hours.

When is the best time to see penguins and whales?

For penguin chicks, go from late December to February; for whales, from January to March. Adélie, chinstrap and gentoo penguins breed on slightly different clocks, compared species by species in our penguin guide. Emperor penguins need a different, rarer kind of trip.

SpeciesEggsHatchingChicks go to seaTime at the colony
Adélie9Two by mid-NovemberIn DecemberFebruary, at 7 to 9 weeksBreed on land October to February
Chinstrap8Two in late NovemberAfter 33 to 36 daysAt about 7 to 8 weeksBack October to November, leave March to early May
Gentoo14Two, on a more variable scheduleAfter 34 to 37 daysAt 80 to 90 daysGenerally at their islands all year

Whale numbers build through December. The cruise-ship survey ran from November 24, 2019 to January 24, 2020, so it says nothing about February and March,11 but the Wilhelmina Bay study shows humpbacks still gathering on krill in Peninsula bays in autumn.15

Seals set a different calendar on South Georgia. Southern elephant seals breed from late September to early November, and pups are weaned after about 24 days.18 Antarctic fur seals breed from mid-November to early January, with about 70,000 pups born on Bird Island alone,19 an island off South Georgia's northwest tip.20 Pick early November for elephant seal pups and December or January for fur seal pups.

When is the cheapest time to go to Antarctica?

Late in the season, though how much you save depends on the line. Here is one worked example: three 10-night Ushuaia round trips on Hondius, as listed on October 14, 2026. The twin cabin price is half the whole-cabin fare. On the March 17 trip, the booking form offered the shared four-berth place to women only.

DepartureShared four-berth cabin, per personTwin porthole cabin, per personVersus January
January 6, 202713$9,650 (sold out)$11,900 (sold out)
March 7, 202716$9,200$11,300About 5% less
March 17, 202717$7,800 (women only)$9,650About 19% less

A couple in a twin porthole cabin pays $23,800 in January and $19,300 on the March 17 departure, a saving of $4,500.1317 In exchange they get about seven fewer hours of sun a day than in mid-January, 32°F (-0.1°C) instead of 34°F (1.1°C) at Faraday, and colonies past their peak. Viking's fares move less: its 2027-28 March sailings list at $15,999 against $17,499 in early January, about 9% less, and its mid-November and late-February departures cost the same $15,999.6 More ways to cut the bill are in the cheapest way to Antarctica and how much an Antarctica trip costs.

When is Antarctica busiest?

December and the first half of January fill first. On October 14, 2026, Viking had sold out six of its eight departures between December 4 and January 13,6 and Oceanwide's January 6 Hondius trip had a single suite left.13 IAATO says visitor numbers rise and fall around holiday-season timetables.2 The busiest landing sites in 2025-26 were Neko Harbour, Whalers Bay on Deception Island, Portal Point, Cuverville Island and Damoy Point/Dorian Bay, together about 26.5% of all landed visits.2

The Antarctic Treaty's visitor guidelines cap the crowd on any one beach, whatever the month: only one ship may visit a site at a time, and no more than 100 passengers may be ashore at a site at once, fewer where the site's own guideline says so.21 In a busy month that shows up as competition for landing slots rather than bigger crowds ashore. Bird flu precautions can also close sites at the height of summer: in 2024-25, Cuverville Island was closed from December 11 to January 22 and Brown Bluff from December 12 to February 26.2

What is the worst time to go to Antarctica?

April to September, because tourist ships do not land then: the 2025-26 season's last landing was on April 1.2 Within the season, the edges carry the most risk: early on there is more sea ice about, since it peaks in September,5 and late in the season you trade chicks and daylight for price. Weather can cancel landings at any point; in 2025-26 IAATO reported landings cancelled and voyages cut short by a day or more.2

How many days do you need in Antarctica?

Plan on 10 to 12 days if you sail from Ushuaia: the Hondius trips above are 10 nights, and Lindblad's classic trip runs 12 days.1310 On the 10-night Hondius trip, days 2 and 3 cross the Drake Passage, days 4 to 8 are in Antarctica and days 9 and 10 cross back.13 Flying over the Drake shortens the trip; see fly or sail the Drake Passage. Which month should you pick?

  • First trip, flexible dates: early to mid January. Warmest weather, chicks in the colonies, whale numbers near the survey's high. Not for anyone who needs the lowest fare.
  • Families tied to school holidays: the Christmas and New Year sailings. Book early and expect a premium: Viking's started at $17,999, against $14,999 for February.6
  • Snow and courtship: mid to late November, for white landscapes and nesting penguins. Not for anyone who minds 29°F (-1.7°C) averages.
  • Whale watchers: February and March, when humpbacks are still feeding hard and berths are easier to find.
  • Tightest budget: the second half of March. Not for travelers set on seeing small chicks.
  • South Georgia and the Peninsula together: November for elephant seals, December and January for fur seal pups.
  • Midnight sun: around December 21, on a trip that heads south toward the Antarctic Circle.
