Should I choose Lindblad or Silversea for Antarctica?

In November and December, Lindblad's fly cruise is cheaper: $14,060 per person with flights for 8 days on November 25, 2026, against $22,700 for Silversea's on November 19, on ships of 148 guests or fewer. By sea, Silversea is far cheaper, from $11,000 for 10 days in December against $27,252 for Lindblad's 12-day voyage, with the Santiago charter and a butler included.

Facts checked October 15, 2026 against 33 sources.

The short version

Choose Lindblad for naturalist guiding, small ships and a November or December fly cruise: 102 to 148 guests, a National Geographic photographer, and fly-cruise fares 18% to 23% lower per Antarctic day in those months. Choose Silversea for a cheaper sea voyage, luxury service and travel from Santiago; from late January its fly cruise also costs 2% to 15% less per Antarctic day than Lindblad's.

Lindblad or Silversea: which should I book for Antarctica?

Book Lindblad Expeditions for small ships, National Geographic guiding and, in November and December, the cheaper fly cruise; book Silversea for a luxury ship, travel handled from Santiago and a much cheaper voyage by sea. An open cabin on Lindblad's 8-day fly cruise from Puerto Natales cost $14,060 per person with flights on November 25, 2026, against $22,700 for Silversea's on November 19.12 By sea the order flips: Silversea's 10-day December voyage on Silver Wind costs $11,000 in an Oceanview suite, while Lindblad's 12-day Voyage to Antarctica had nothing open below $27,252.31

The two lines run Antarctica in different styles. Lindblad, founded in 1979 and listed on Nasdaq, sails ships of 102 to 148 guests with a National Geographic photographer aboard. Silversea, founded in 1994 and owned by Royal Caribbean Group, sails ships of 220 to 274 guests with a butler for every suite.45678910 We have not sailed with either line. Lindblad's fares were read on October 14, 2026 and Silversea's on October 15, per person with two sharing.

Which fly cruise is better, Lindblad's or Silversea's?

Lindblad's costs less in November and December; Silversea's is cheapest in late October and costs less per day in Antarctica from late January. Lindblad's Antarctica Direct: Fly the Drake Passage starts and ends in Puerto Natales, with a flight of about two hours each way to King George Island and days 3 to 6 set aside for exploring.13 Silversea's 6-day fly cruise is a 10-day trip from Santiago, with five days at the Antarctic Sound, the Antarctic Peninsula and the South Shetland Islands.15 Cheapest open cabin, flights to King George Island included:

DepartureLindblad, 8 daysPer exploring daySilversea, 6-day cruisePer exploring day
Late OctoberNo 8-day departure$13,000, Oct 20, Last-Minute18$2,600
Late November$14,060, Nov 251$3,515$22,700, Nov 192$4,540
December$15,589, Dec 141$3,897$23,900, Dec 12$4,780
Late January$27,520, Jan 211$6,880$29,100, Jan 2415$5,820
February$21,310, Feb 91$5,328$26,100, Feb 232$5,220

The per-day columns are our arithmetic. Lindblad's totals include its $3,000 charge for the flights, and on January 21 only its Category 6 doubles were left; its January 2 departure had no two-person cabin at all.1 Lindblad's smallest ship, Orion with 102 guests, runs 9- and 10-day fly cruises whose cheapest open cabin was $20,650 with flights.1

The fares buy different logistics. Silversea's covers a Santiago hotel night, its charter to Puerto Williams, a night at its hotel there each way and all the cold-weather gear; international flights to Santiago are extra.141618 Lindblad's covers a Puerto Natales hotel night each way and the flights to Antarctica, but getting to Puerto Natales, by 3 p.m. on day 1, is up to you.136

What happens if the flight to Antarctica can't leave?

Both lines give it until 2 p.m. on the third day, and both refund the cruise fare if the plane has not left by then. If Lindblad's flight south cannot leave by 2 p.m. on day 3, it cancels the trip and refunds the cruise fare and internal air, and it pays for an extra night in Puerto Natales while you wait.19 Silversea keeps trying for up to three consecutive days; if it cannot fly by 2 p.m. on the third, the Antarctic part may be cancelled with a full refund of the cruise fare and all money paid to Silversea, and extra nights at its Puerto Williams hotel, with meals, are on Silversea.14 Lindblad helps rebook international flights only if its own air department sold them, and Silversea does not refund flights or hotels you booked yourself, so buy insurance that covers delays.1914

Pack light for either. Lindblad's flight takes one checked bag of up to 44 lb (19.9 kg), and Silversea's charters one of up to 50 lb (23 kg) plus a carry-on.1916 Our guide to flying or sailing the Drake Passage helps you decide whether to fly at all.

Which is cheaper by sea, Lindblad or Silversea?

Silversea, by more than half on the cabins still open for 2026-27.

Two things soften the gap. Lindblad's advertised lead fares for the voyage, $19,000 from Santiago and $19,968 from Buenos Aires, were sold out, and for 2027-28 the same voyage starts at $13,500, so booking a year ahead changes the picture.1 Lindblad also offered US and Canadian residents up to $2,000 per person in air credit on select 2027 departures booked by November 4, 2026.23 Silversea's low prices are Last-Minute fares, offered within five months of departure and non-refundable.10 See what an Antarctica trip costs for the rest of the budget.

Is Silversea more luxurious than Lindblad?

Yes, in service and space; Lindblad puts its money into guiding and gear instead. Silversea's fares include butler service in every suite, Silver Endeavour's smallest suite is 355 square feet with a veranda, and Silversea staffs its ships at nearly one crew member per guest.101816 Lindblad serves meals at unassigned tables, keeps the bridge open to guests, and gives space on Endurance to a science hub and a photo workshop; Endurance's eight Category 7 suites measure 430 square feet.24251

What Lindblad adds is expertise: a National Geographic photographer, a certified photo instructor and an OM System locker with cameras to borrow on all four of its polar ships.6 It quotes a staff-to-guest ratio of no more than 1 to 16 across its fleet; Silversea's figure counts all crew, so the two are not comparable.2616 Our luxury Antarctica cruises guide covers the other high-end lines.

Which line gets you ashore more?

Lindblad. IAATO allows no more than 100 visitors ashore at a site at a time, so Lindblad's ships of 102 to 148 guests land in two groups, while Silversea's 220 to 274 need at least three (our arithmetic).27589 Ships carrying more than 200 also face extra site limits; Petermann Island, for one, admits no more than two of them a day.28 On hull strength, Lindblad's Endurance and Resolution are PC5, which Transport Canada describes as rated for year-round operation in medium first-year ice, a step above Silver Endeavour's PC6.291112 For more on ship size, see small vs large expedition ships.

Lindblad or Silversea for Svalbard?

Lindblad gives you more days for the money; Silversea's fare is easier to cancel. Lindblad's 10-day Svalbard: In Search of Iconic Arctic Wildlife on National Geographic Endurance had cabins open from $15,230 per person, about $1,523 a day, with the group flight from Oslo to Longyearbyen extra.130 Silversea's 7-day Exploring Svalbard on Silver Endeavour, a round trip from Longyearbyen on June 6, 2027, starts at $15,050, about $2,150 a day, and is 100% refundable until January 6, 2027; that price is $2,500 below the $17,550 per guest shown before Silversea's "Save $5,000" offer, which expires on November 2, 2026.31 Lindblad calls Svalbard "one of the best places on the planet to see polar bears"; see our polar bear page for when and where they turn up.30

Which is easier to cancel, Lindblad or Silversea?

Lindblad, unless you pay more for Silversea's flexible fare early. Lindblad takes 15% of the cabin fare when you book and the balance 120 days before departure. Cancel 120 days or more out and that 15% becomes a travel certificate valid for 12 months; from 119 to 90 days you forfeit 50% of the trip cost, and inside 90 days all of it.1732

Silversea's Last-Minute fares are paid in full and cannot be refunded, and on October 15, 2026 the six cheapest Silversea Antarctic fares on sale were all Last-Minute fares.102 Its All-Inclusive Plus fares carry a refundable deposit, but the refundable share and its deadline are set voyage by voyage: 50% until November 8, 2026 on Silver Cloud's January 8 departure, and 75% until October 25, 2026 on the January 24 fly cruise.332215

Who should pick Lindblad, and who should pick Silversea?

Pick Lindblad if you:

  • want a fly cruise in November or December, from $14,060 with flights;1
  • want small landing groups and a National Geographic photographer on board;6
  • want the PC5 sister ships, or a deposit that turns into credit if you cancel 120 days or more out;1132
  • want 10 days in Svalbard for about what Silversea charges for 7.131

Pick Silversea if you:

  • want to cross the Drake by ship in luxury for less, from $11,000 for 10 days in December;3
  • want flights from Santiago, hotels, a butler and polar gear in one fare;1410
  • want the season's cheapest luxury fly cruise, $13,000 on October 20, 2026, or are going in late January or February, when its fly cruise costs less per day in Antarctica than Lindblad's.18151
