What is the best luxury cruise to Antarctica?
Seabourn, Silversea, Scenic, Ponant, Lindblad, Viking and Hapag-Lloyd compared on 2026-27 balcony-cabin fares per day, suites, crew and inclusions, and why paying more does not buy more landings.
The short answer
Scenic, on the measures we can check: at most 200 guests in Antarctica, a butler for every suite, nearly one crew member per guest, and 13 days from $18,973 on fares ending October 20 or 28, 2026. In their cheapest open balcony cabins, most luxury lines charge about $1,140 to $1,500 a day. None buys extra landings: every ship may land at most 100 people at a site at once.
Facts checked October 15, 2026 against 52 sources.
This guide compares seven higher-priced expedition lines sailing to Antarctica in 2026-27: Seabourn, Silversea, Scenic, Ponant, Lindblad Expeditions, Viking and Hapag-Lloyd Cruises, with Atlas Ocean Voyages as a smaller all-inclusive option. Their ships all land under the same Antarctic rules as a budget ship, so the premium pays for the suite, the service and the bill, not for the time you spend on the ice. Fares below were read on October 14 and 15, 2026.
How much does a luxury cruise to Antarctica cost?
From $9,000 per person, for a last-minute window suite, but compared like for like, in each line's cheapest open cabin with a private balcony, most luxury lines charge about $1,140 to $1,500 a day for 2026-27, and Lindblad's fly-cruise more.123 Fares are per person with two sharing:
| Line, ship and departure | Guests | Cheapest open balcony cabin | Length | Per day |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Silversea, Silver Wind, Oct 20, 2026 | 2744 | $10,300, Veranda Suite, 295 sq ft, Last-Minute fare1 | 9 days | $1,144 |
| Viking, Octantis or Polaris, Feb 2027 | 3785 | $14,999, Nordic Balcony, 215 sq ft, a window that opens rather than a balcony to step onto67 | 13 days | $1,154 |
| Atlas, World Navigator, Mar 8, 2027 | Up to 1768 | $13,950, Veranda Suite, 270 sq ft9 | 12 days (11 nights) | $1,163 |
| Seabourn, Seabourn Pursuit, Mar 13, 2027 | 26410 | $15,998, Veranda Suite, 355 sq ft1112 | 11 days | $1,454 |
| Scenic, Eclipse or Eclipse II, Feb 2027 | 200 in Antarctica13 | $18,973, Deluxe Verandah Suite, 344 to 430 sq ft, Preferred Fare ending Oct 20 or 28, 20261413 | 13 days | $1,459 |
| Hapag-Lloyd, HANSEATIC spirit, Dec 21, 2026, Cape Town to Ushuaia | 19915 | $32,307 (€29,370), Junior Suite, 452 sq ft; every smaller cabin sold out16 | 22 days | $1,469 |
| Ponant, Le Boréal, Dec 10, 2026 | Up to 20017 | $17,930, balcony stateroom, 193 sq ft plus a 43 sq ft balcony2 | 12 days | $1,494 |
| Lindblad, National Geographic Explorer, Nov 25, 2026, fly-cruise | 14818 | $17,490 including $3,000 of flights, Category 5319 | 8 days | $2,186 |
Per-day figures are our arithmetic: the fare divided by the days each line advertises, counting Atlas's 11 nights as the 12 days of its itinerary. Viking has no step-out balconies, so its row is the closest match rather than an exact one.7
The cheapest cabins of any kind, and the strings attached:
- Silversea sells a 240 sq ft Oceanview Suite on the same Silver Wind trip for $9,000, $1,000 a day. Both fares are Last-Minute fares, paid in full and non-refundable, for a trip that sails across the Drake Passage from Puerto Williams and flies back from King George Island.120 Its 6-day fly-cruise on Silver Endeavour from the same date starts at $13,000, about $2,167 a day.21
- Atlas sells a 183 sq ft Ocean Suite Guarantee for $12,150, with the suite assigned up to seven days before sailing; its fares include 25% Bonus Savings valid through December 31, 2026.922
- Ponant had one 226 sq ft window stateroom left at $16,850.2
- Lindblad's Category 3 window cabin on the same fly-cruise was $14,060 with flights.319 Its sea voyages include no flights; the cheapest open one was the 18-day Antarctica and Patagonia on February 21, 2027 at $23,590, and the cheapest open cabin on the 12-day Voyage to Antarctica of December 2 was $27,252.323
- Viking's $14,999 is a Fall Sale fare that expires on October 31, 2026; the standard fare is $15,999 to $16,999.6
- Scenic's fare combines 15% off the cruise part of the fare with $2,500 off in place of an air credit, ending October 20 or October 28, 2026 depending on the date.14
- Hapag-Lloyd's 2027-28 Antarctic fares start at €15,240, or US$17,526 in its US booking engine, for a balcony cabin on 14 days from February 11, 2028.1624
What does luxury buy on an expedition ship?
Five things: a bigger cabin, more staff, one fare for nearly everything, the flights to the ship, and a few paid extras the budget lines do not carry.
Space. On Silver Endeavour the smallest suite measures 356 sq ft including a 52 sq ft veranda, and on Seabourn Venture and Pursuit the entry Veranda Suite measures 355 sq ft including a 75 sq ft veranda.2526 Scenic's suites start at 344 sq ft.13 Viking's cheapest Nordic Balcony stateroom is 215 sq ft, and the window there is a Nordic Balcony, whose top half lowers, rather than a step-out balcony.277 Silversea's two older ships, Silver Wind and Silver Cloud, sell Oceanview suites of 240 sq ft, which is why they undercut Silver Endeavour.128
Staff. Scenic gives a guest to crew ratio "close to 1:1", and every Scenic suite has a butler.13 Silversea lists 239 crew for 274 guests on Silver Wind and 207 for 220 on Silver Endeavour, and its fares include butler-serviced suites.2920 IAATO's directory lists HANSEATIC inspiration with 199 passengers and 169 crew.30 Viking Octantis carries 256 crew for 378 guests.275
One bill. Seabourn's fare includes drinks, Wi-Fi and gratuities.31 Silversea's includes all dining, wines and spirits, gratuities and Wi-Fi.20 Scenic's covers drinks except a few rare wines and spirits, all tips on board and ashore, and Wi-Fi.1432 Ponant's covers all drinks except premium bottles, 24-hour room service and unlimited internet.33 Atlas includes wines, spirits, craft beer and gratuities.34 Lindblad includes beer, wine, cocktails and spirits, crew gratuities, and the use of kayaks.35 Hapag-Lloyd includes all gratuities and selected soft drinks, with a drinks package at €44 per person per day.3637 Viking includes beer, wine and soft drinks with meals but recommends $20 per person per night in tips and sells a drinks package at $27 a night.7
Getting to the ship. Seabourn, Scenic, Ponant, Viking and Atlas all fold a Buenos Aires hotel night and flights to and from Ushuaia into the fare.11143379 Silversea's include a Santiago hotel and charter flights to Puerto Williams or King George Island.3839 Hapag-Lloyd's Cape Town voyage includes a charter flight from Ushuaia to Buenos Aires.40 Lindblad's sea voyages do not include any flights; its fly-cruises add the charter to the fare.233
Paid extras. Each Scenic ship carries two helicopters and a submarine, booked on board at a price Scenic does not publish.32 Viking's two submarines cost $499 a dive.7 Seabourn retired its submarines after the 2025-26 season.41 Kayaking is included on Silversea, Viking and Lindblad but costs $325 an outing on Seabourn and €350 a session on Le Boréal and its Ponant sisters.386354233
What doesn't luxury buy in Antarctica?
More time on land, or access to more places. IAATO's bylaws apply to every member ship: no more than 100 visitors ashore at a site at once, at least one guide for every 20, one ship at a site at a time, and "stringent restrictions on time and place of landing activities" for ships of 201 to 500 passengers.43 A Seabourn suite and a shared Oceanwide cabin come under the same limits.
The bigger luxury ships therefore land in more turns. Divide the guests on board by 100 and round up:
| Ship | Guests in Antarctica | Turns at a 100-visitor site |
|---|---|---|
| Ponant's Le Boréal | Up to 20017 | 2 |
| Scenic Eclipse and Eclipse II | 20013 | 2 |
| HANSEATIC spirit and inspiration | 1991530 | 2 |
| National Geographic Explorer | 14818 | 2 |
| Silver Endeavour | 22029 | 3 |
| Seabourn Venture and Pursuit | 26410 | 3 |
| Silver Wind | 2744 | 3 |
| Viking Octantis and Polaris | 3785 | 4 |
Turn counts are our arithmetic and assume a full ship. Size also closes doors. Of the 45 site guidelines the Antarctic Treaty Secretariat publishes, 11 admit only ships carrying 200 passengers or fewer, among them Penguin Island, the Aitcho Islands, Hannah Point, Paulet Island, Turret Point and Baily Head on Deception Island.44 Every Seabourn, Silversea and Viking polar ship is over that line; Ponant, Scenic, Hapag-Lloyd and Lindblad's ships are not.1029517131518
Money can buy you a better place in the queue on one line. Seabourn's Polar Pass, at $1,850 on its own page and $2,250 in some cruise listings, buys priority access, the option to be first off the ship at landings and more time ashore, plus dinner with the expedition leader.4546 It shares out the ship's landing time differently; it does not add to it.
Luxury does not shorten the crossing either. Ponant's 10-night Peninsula voyages cross the Drake Passage both ways, and so do Seabourn's 11-day trip and Viking's Antarctic Explorer.21147 Of these lines, only Silversea, Lindblad and Atlas sell trips that fly over it; our guide to whether to fly or sail the Drake Passage weighs that choice.38348
What is the most luxurious cruise line to Antarctica?
On the measures we can check, Scenic. Its two ships carry no more than 200 guests in Antarctica, so they keep access to the sites closed to larger ships; every suite has a verandah and a butler; crew numbers are close to one per guest; and the fare covers drinks, tips, Wi-Fi and the flights to Ushuaia.1314 The cost is about $1,459 a day, in the upper half of the balcony comparison.14
Silversea's Silver Endeavour matches Scenic on suite size and service, with 207 crew for 220 guests, but its size puts it in the 201 to 500 group.2921 Seabourn's Veranda Suite is about the same size, 355 sq ft, on a 264-guest ship.26 Ponant is the cheaper way onto a 200-guest ship: $16,850 for a window stateroom or $17,930 with a balcony, against $18,973 for Scenic's cheapest suite on a fare that ends October 20 or 28, 2026.214 Our Silversea vs Seabourn comparison sets the two biggest names side by side.
Which luxury Antarctica cruise suits which traveler?
- Lowest luxury fare: Silversea's Silver Wind Last-Minute fares, from $9,000 for 9 days.1 Not for anyone who might need a refund, since the fare is paid in full up front and non-refundable.20
- Classic Peninsula trip for less: Viking, $14,999 for 13 days with the Ushuaia charter.67 Not for anyone under 18 or travelers who want small landing groups, with 378 guests aboard.75
- Fewest people at each landing: Lindblad's National Geographic Explorer, with 148 guests, then Ponant and Scenic, capped at 200 in Antarctica.181713 Not for budgets under about $14,000.3
- Helicopters and a submarine: Scenic.32 Not for travelers who want every extra priced before they book.
- Skipping the Drake: Silversea's fly-cruises, starting in Santiago, or Lindblad's from Puerto Natales.383 Not for travelers with a fixed flight home, since the flights wait for weather at King George Island.39
- Late-season deal: Seabourn Pursuit on March 13, 2027, at $15,998 for 11 days; the same trip on Seabourn Venture on December 28, 2026 costs $26,998.1149 Not for kayakers who expect paddling included.42
- Naturalists and families: Lindblad, which carries a National Geographic photographer and accepts children from age 4.3550 Not for travelers who want flights from Buenos Aires in the fare.23
- Long voyages and a bilingual ship: Hapag-Lloyd in 2027-28, with German and English spoken on board and Peninsula trips that add South Georgia.3724 Not for 2026-27 travelers below suite prices.16
- All-inclusive on a smaller yacht: Atlas, from $12,150 with drinks and tips included.934 Not for travelers who want kayaking in the fare, which costs extra.51
Is a balcony worth it on a luxury Antarctica cruise?
On most luxury ships the question answers itself, because almost every cabin has one. Every suite on Seabourn Venture and Silver Endeavour has a veranda, all Scenic suites have a verandah, and on Ponant's Le Boréal class only seven cabins lack a balcony.26251352 The real choices are on Silversea's Silver Wind, where a Veranda Suite costs $1,300 more than a 240 sq ft Oceanview suite on the October 20 sailing; on Ponant's Le Boréal, where a balcony stateroom costs $1,080 more than the window stateroom; and on Viking, where every stateroom's Nordic Balcony is a window that opens.127 Our balcony guide has the price premiums line by line.
Which month is best for a luxury Antarctica cruise?
For price, the end of the season. Seabourn's 11-day trip costs $15,998 on Pursuit in mid-March against $26,998 on Venture over New Year, and Viking's cheapest 2026-27 cabins were on February departures, at $14,999 against $17,999 to $18,199 in December, though the December fares came with free flights from the US.11496 For light, wildlife and weather by month, see the best time to visit Antarctica.
