Can you cruise to Antarctica on a big cruise ship?

Celebrity, Princess and Holland America fares and routes for 2026-27, the rule that keeps ships over 500 passengers offshore, why Norwegian Cruise Line sells no Antarctic sailing, and who a big ship suits.

The short answer

Yes, but only to look: IAATO's bylaws and the Antarctic Treaty visitor guidelines bar ships carrying more than 500 passengers from landing anyone. Celebrity, Princess and Holland America sail there in 2026-27, from $3,698 per person (Celebrity Equinox, 14 nights from January 2, 2027), $4,437 (Majestic Princess) and $5,569 (Oosterdam), taxes included. Norwegian Cruise Line sells no Antarctic sailing.

Facts checked October 15, 2026 against 16 sources.

Three big-ship lines sell Antarctica for 2026-27: Celebrity Cruises, Princess Cruises and Holland America Line. All three sail from South America in January or February, show you the Antarctic Peninsula from the deck, and land no one. Below are their fares and day-by-day routes as listed on October 14 and 15, 2026, the rule that keeps these ships offshore, why Norwegian Cruise Line is not among them, and who should pick a big ship over an expedition cruise.

Which big cruise ships sail to Antarctica in 2026-27?

Seven, in the preliminary 2026-27 estimate from IAATO, the association of Antarctic tour operators. Together they plan 14 cruise-only voyages to the Peninsula region with about 26,238 passengers.1

ShipCompany, as IAATO lists itVoyagesPassengers, estimated
Celebrity EquinoxCelebrity Cruise Lines/Royal Caribbean Group38,5561
Majestic PrincessPrincess Cruises27,120
OosterdamHolland America Line35,892
ZaandamHolland America Line11,432
Seven Seas MarinerNorwegian Cruise Lines Holdings21,334
M/V Oceania InsigniaNorwegian Cruise Lines Holdings21,224
Azamara JourneyAzamara1680

That is about a quarter of all the visitors IAATO expects in the Peninsula region that season. The same estimate has 65,055 passengers on landing voyages, 13,498 on air-cruises and 235 on yachts, so the big ships carry roughly one visitor in four (our arithmetic).1 The share has held steady: in 2025-26, IAATO counted 27,217 cruise-only passengers on 15 voyages, against 85,195 people who went ashore.1 Holland America, Princess, Celebrity's parent group, Norwegian Cruise Lines Holdings and Azamara all appear in IAATO's member directory marked "Cruise only".10 Royal Caribbean Group is there only through Celebrity Equinox; no Royal Caribbean-branded ship is on either season's list.1

Can big cruise ships land passengers in Antarctica?

No. A ship carrying more than 500 passengers may not put anyone ashore. IAATO's bylaws state that "Organizers of vessels that carry more than 500 passengers are not permitted to make landings", and the Antarctic Treaty parties' general guidelines for visitors say "Vessels with more than 500 passengers shall not make landings in Antarctica."34 IAATO files these ships in their own class, CR, for vessels that "carry more than 500 passengers and do not make landings (i.e. cruise only)".2 The Treaty measure that would make the limit binding on governments, Measure 15 of 2009, is still not in force, so the rule works through IAATO membership and the visitor guidelines.5

Every ship on the 2026-27 list is over the limit: even the smallest, M/V Oceania Insignia, averages about 612 passengers a voyage in IAATO's estimate (our arithmetic), and the three biggest are several times over it.1 IAATO's vessel directory gives Oosterdam 2,388 passengers, Celebrity Equinox 3,148 and Majestic Princess 4,450; the lines' own pages put Equinox at 2,852 guests and Majestic Princess at 3,560.967 For scale, the ships that do land may have no more than 100 visitors ashore at a site at once, with one guide for every 20, and only one ship may use a site at a time.3 At that rate a full Majestic Princess, at 3,560 guests, would need 36 turns at a single site to land everyone (our arithmetic).

What you get instead is scenic cruising. Princess names its four Antarctic days "Antarctic Peninsula (Scenic Cruising)", Holland America lists them as "Antarctic Experience", and Celebrity's Antarctica page promises views of snow-covered peaks "From your ship".786 None of the three itineraries we read includes a landing, and Celebrity's Antarctica page does not mention one.6 For the full rulebook, see Antarctica visitor rules.

How much does a big-ship Antarctica cruise cost?

From $3,698 per person for the whole cruise, or about $253 to $264 a night, the lowest fares we have found for any 2026-27 Antarctic voyage. All three lines quote per person with two sharing and with taxes and fees included; Princess and Holland America state that their fares are cruise only, without flights.678

Line and cruiseShip, datesLengthCheapest cabinPer nightPer day in Antarctic waters

Holland America, South America & AntarcticaOosterdam, Feb 1 to 23, 202722 nights$5,569, Inside8$253Days not stated

Per-night and per-day figures are our arithmetic. Other departures cost more. Celebrity's January 16 and January 30 sailings start at $5,065 and $5,292; Princess's January 6 sailing starts at $5,567, down from $5,717; Holland America's January 10 Oosterdam cruise, from Valparaiso to Buenos Aires, is also $5,569.678 Princess sells both of its 2026-27 sailings as Last Minute Deals, and its Princess Plus fare adds a drinks package, Wi-Fi and crew tips to the cabin price.7

Booking a year ahead can cost less. Princess lists a January 7, 2028 Majestic Princess sailing from $3,539 for an Interior, down from $5,630, and Holland America's 2027-28 South America and Antarctica cruises on Nieuw Amsterdam start at $5,119.78

Per night, a big ship is the cheapest way to reach Antarctic waters by a wide margin. Per day spent there, the gap narrows: Princess's four scenic days work out at about $1,109 each and Celebrity's two at about $1,849, while a shared berth on Oceanwide's Hondius, at $7,800 for an 11-day March 17, 2027 trip that spends days 4 to 8 in Antarctica (one berth left when we read it, for a woman), comes to about $1,560 a day with landings (our arithmetic).7612

Does Norwegian Cruise Line go to Antarctica?

No. Norwegian Cruise Line sells no Antarctic sailing. On October 15, 2026, the search data behind ncl.com held 811 itineraries and no Antarctica destination. Its six South America itineraries are all on Norwegian Star and depart between December 2027 and March 2028; apart from a transatlantic crossing from Lisbon, they call at Ushuaia and at Stanley in the Falkland Islands, and none lists an Antarctic port or Antarctic scenic cruising.11 The cheapest, a 15-day cruise from Santiago to Buenos Aires, starts at $3,139.11 NCL's Antarctica page still describes scenic cruising around Elephant Island, but its block of featured Antarctica itineraries was empty when we read it, and its Find Cruises button leads to those same South America sailings.11

The Antarctic ships in IAATO's list belong to the parent company. IAATO names Norwegian Cruise Lines Holdings as the operator of Seven Seas Mariner and M/V Oceania Insignia in 2026-27, and of MS Marina and Seven Seas Splendor in 2025-26.1 None of those ships appears among Norwegian Cruise Line's own South America sailings, which are all on Norwegian Star.11 We found no published fares for them, so this guide quotes none.

Is a Celebrity cruise to Antarctica worth it?

It is if you want the lowest fare and are content with two days of Antarctic scenery inside a South America cruise. Celebrity Equinox leaves Buenos Aires at 5 p.m., calls at Ushuaia on day 5, passes Cape Horn on day 6, cruises the Gerlache Strait, Paradise Bay and the Schollaert Channel on day 7, and reaches Elephant Island on day 8.6 It then calls at Stanley, Puerto Madryn and Montevideo, Uruguay, and returns to Buenos Aires on day 15.6

Celebrity says its Antarctica cruises run in January and February with six days at sea, and that you watch for penguins, seals and whales "in the company of expert naturalists".6 Its 2027 sailings leave January 2, 16 and 30.6 IAATO expects three Equinox voyages carrying 8,556 passengers, or 2,852 a trip by our arithmetic, the same as the occupancy Celebrity lists for the ship.16 It is not worth it if your reason for going is to walk among penguins; for that, look at our best Antarctica cruise lines.

Does Princess go to Antarctica?

Yes. Majestic Princess sails two 17-day Antarctica & Patagonia round trips from Buenos Aires in 2026-27, January 6 to 23 and January 23 to February 9, 2027.7 Each calls at Punta Arenas on day 6 and Ushuaia on day 7, scenic cruises the Antarctic Peninsula on days 9 to 12, and then calls at Stanley and Montevideo.7 Four days in Antarctic waters is twice Celebrity's two.76 In 2025-26 Princess sent Sapphire Princess, which IAATO counted on three voyages with 7,715 passengers.1

OceanviewSold outSold out
Balcony$6,008$5,719
Mini-Suite$6,147$5,937

Fares are averages per person for two guests, with taxes and fees included, cruise only.7 IAATO estimates 7,120 passengers on the ship's two voyages, about 3,560 each by our arithmetic, which matches the guest count Princess gives for the ship.17

Does Holland America offer Antarctica cruises?

Yes, on 22-day voyages around the tip of South America. Oosterdam sails from Valparaiso on January 10, 2027 to Buenos Aires, then from Buenos Aires on February 1 to San Antonio, the port for Santiago, on February 23.8 The route takes in Montevideo, Puerto Madryn, Stanley, the Antarctic Experience days, the Drake Passage and Cape Horn, Ushuaia, the Beagle Channel and Glacier Alley, Punta Arenas, the Strait of Magellan, the Sarmiento Channel and the Chilean fjords.8

Both sailings start at $5,569 for an Inside cabin, taxes and fees included; a Verandah is $7,869 and a Neptune Suite $13,169 on February 1 or $12,969 on January 10.8 IAATO expects Oosterdam to make three Antarctic voyages and Zaandam one in 2026-27; no other Holland America departure with Antarctic days was in the unsold listings we read, so the rest may be sold out.18 Our Antarctica trip cost guide and cheapest way to Antarctica put this fare beside expedition prices.

How does a big ship compare with an expedition ship?

The big ship costs less and sees Antarctica from offshore; the expedition ship costs more and puts you on land. Here is Princess's cheaper January sailing beside Oceanwide's cheapest March berth on Hondius:

The cheapest landing trip we found is a little cheaper again: $7,050 for one berth in a four-person cabin on Oceanwide's Plancius, 10 days from March 26, 2027, with the remaining berths for women.14 At $8,830, a 130th-anniversary promo fare (was $10,589), part of which applies only to bookings made by November 9, 2026, HX's 12-day trip on Fridtjof Nansen from October 30, 2026 adds a Buenos Aires hotel night, flights to Ushuaia, drinks and tips.1516 Neither crosses to Patagonia or the Falklands.

Is a balcony worth it on a big-ship Antarctica cruise?

Yes, more than on an expedition ship, because on a big ship the deck is the only way you see Antarctica. On Princess's January 23 sailing a Balcony costs $5,719, $1,282 or about 29% more than an Interior; on Oosterdam a Verandah is $7,869 against $5,669 for an Ocean View, $2,200 more.78 A balcony faces one side, so on a day threading the Gerlache Strait you will still want time at the open rail. Our Antarctica cruise balcony guide runs the numbers for expedition ships.

What is the best month for a big-ship Antarctica cruise?

You get January or February, because that is when the big ships go. Celebrity says its Antarctica cruises depart in January and February; Princess's two 2026-27 sailings leave on January 6 and 23; Holland America's leave on January 10 and February 1.678 How those two months compare with the rest of the season, for daylight, wildlife and price, is in the best time to visit Antarctica and Antarctica weather by month.

Who should book a big-ship Antarctica cruise?

Book one if a view of the ice is enough, if you want Patagonia, the Falklands, Buenos Aires and Montevideo on the same trip, or if the budget decides it: at $253 to $264 a night, these cruises cost a fraction of an expedition ship's day rate.678

  • Best value: Princess, for four Antarctic days from $4,437 in January 2027.7
  • Lowest fare: Celebrity, from $3,698 on January 2, 2027, with two Antarctic days.6
  • Longest trip: Holland America's 22 days on Oosterdam, adding the Chilean fjords, from $5,569.8
  • Norwegian Cruise Line fans: no Antarctic sailing is on sale; Norwegian Star's South America cruises stop at Ushuaia and Stanley.11

Skip the big ships if you want to stand on the continent, see a penguin colony from its edge, or kayak. Ships of 500 passengers or fewer make landings, and the best Antarctica cruise lines guide compares them; luxury Antarctica cruises covers the high-end ones, and fly or sail the Drake Passage explains how to skip the Drake Passage crossing.
