How do you visit the Falkland Islands, and what does it cost?

By ship or plane; Americans need no visa. Ships call from late September to early April: big South America cruises spend a day at Stanley (from $5,569), expedition voyages add outer-island landings (from about $10,500). Fliers take LATAM's Saturday flight from Santiago via Punta Arenas or the UK airbridge, then spend about £184 a night each. Go November to February for penguins at Volunteer Point and Sea Lion Island.

Cruise ships call from late September to early April; land-based leisure visitors come mostly October to March, when the outer-island lodges are open. Stanley is open all year.

Getting there
Fly to Mount Pleasant Airport on LATAM every Saturday from Santiago via Punta Arenas, or on the UK Ministry of Defence airbridge twice a week. Or arrive by cruise ship: more than forty include the islands, and all call at Stanley.
Wildlife
About one million breeding penguins of five species, including the world's largest gentoo population and 1,500 pairs of king penguins at Volunteer Point; 70% of the world's black-browed albatrosses; elephant seals, sea lions and orcas at Sea Lion Island.
Landings
Visitor permit on arrival, up to one month, with a return ticket, booked accommodation and USD 2,000,000 evacuation insurance. Countryside Code: stay 20 ft (6 m) from wildlife, ask landowners first, bring no risk foods; some colonies close for bird flu.

The Falkland Islands are a British territory in the South Atlantic where about one million penguins of five species nest every summer, some of them a short walk from the capital, Stanley.1 You can see them for a day from a big cruise ship, for a few days of Zodiac landings on an expedition voyage that usually continues to South Georgia or the Antarctic Peninsula, or for a week or more on a fly-in trip that hops between island lodges in small government planes.23

How can you visit the Falkland Islands?

By ship or by plane, and most people come by ship: 65,197 cruise passengers arrived in the 2025-26 season, against 2,918 leisure visitors who flew in during 2025.4

Way to visitTime in the islandsLowest price we foundWhat you see

Pick the big ship if the Falklands are one stop on a wider South America trip, an expedition ship if you want albatross cliffs and South Georgia on one voyage, and a fly-in trip if you have a week and want evenings in the colonies: cruise calls at Stanley mostly end by 5 or 6 p.m., while gentoos stream home along their "penguin highways" in the early evening.1112

How do you fly to the Falkland Islands?

On LATAM's Saturday flight from Santiago, Chile, which stops at Punta Arenas, or on the UK Ministry of Defence airbridge; both land at Mount Pleasant Airport on East Falkland, and there is no direct flight from the United States.139

RouteWhenWhat to know
LATAM, Santiago to Mount Pleasant via Punta ArenasEvery Saturday, returning the same dayLeaves Punta Arenas at 11:19, lands at 12:57; stops at Río Gallegos, Argentina, southbound on the second Saturday of each month and northbound on the third914
UK airbridge from EnglandLeaves the UK Sundays and Wednesdays; returns Tuesdays and FridaysAbout 18 hours with a refueling stop; book through the Falkland Islands Government Office in London1513

Neither route publishes a fare: agents quote LATAM seats on request.9 LATAM's São Paulo flight, suspended during Covid-19, had not restarted when we checked.14 Routing through Chile means meeting Chile's entry rules, because the Punta Arenas stop is not treated as a transit.15 Until November 15, 2026, the airbridge uses East Midlands Airport while RAF Brize Norton's runway is resurfaced.16 Mount Pleasant is a military site, and photos there without a permit can bring a prison sentence.17

Book the airport bus to Stanley before you arrive; it drops you at your accommodation.13 Between islands, the government air service FIGAS flies small Britten-Norman Islanders to grass strips like an air taxi: book by 10 a.m. the day before, get your departure time that afternoon, and keep to 44 lb (20 kg) of baggage.318 Lodges have few rooms and little late availability from December to February, so book them first, and spend your last night on East Falkland to be sure of reaching the airport.14

Which cruises go to the Falkland Islands?

Two kinds, and all of them schedule Stanley: big ships touring South America, which stop on the way around Cape Horn, and expedition ships, which add Zodiac landings at outer islands on a route that usually includes South Georgia or Antarctica.2 In 2025-26, 80 of the 129 ships that called (62%) went beyond Stanley, most often to West Point Island (29% of outer-island calls), Saunders Island (23%) and New Island (22%).4

How much does a trip to the Falkland Islands cost?

From $5,569 on a big-ship cruise, about $10,500 on an expedition voyage with outer-island landings, or international flights plus about £184 per person per night on a fly-in stay; that last figure is the 2025 average, about half of it for accommodation.574 For a land trip, what we could confirm for 2026-27:

  • Lodges: Sea Lion Lodge charges £230 per person per night with all meals, £180 for stays of five nights or more, plus £80 a night for single use.33
  • A typical stay: at the average spend, 11 nights cost about £2,000 per person before international flights (our arithmetic).4
  • Island flights: FIGAS lists resident fares of £65 to £78 one way and charters at £1,834 per flying hour, but no visitor fare, so ask your lodge or agent.34
  • Departure tax: £40, in cash (pounds, euros or US dollars) or by Visa or Mastercard debit card.18

On a cruise, the main extra is shore excursions: HX sells Volunteer Point at $338 a head, and our Stanley guide lists the cheaper town tours.7 The local pound is at par with sterling and US dollars are widely accepted, but the only ATM is in Stanley, so carry cash for the outer islands.35 Our Antarctica trip cost guide covers flights and insurance.

When is the best time to visit the Falkland Islands?

November to February, when every penguin species is ashore and the outer-island lodges are open; December has been the busiest month over the past ten years.36374

MonthsWildlifeFor visitors
September and OctoberMagellanics return in early September, rockhoppers in early October; gentoos and albatrosses lay; elephant seals pup3839124036First ships: the 2025-26 season opened on September 2911

January and FebruaryChicks grow; rockhoppers fledge in February, gentoo chicks go to sea late in the month; sea lions pup391236Ships of 1,200 to 2,850 passengers called at Stanley 15 times in January and February 2026 (our count)11
March and AprilRockhoppers molt and leave by April; Magellanics leave by mid-April3938Sea Lion and Pebble islands list opening to March 31; the last ship of 2025-26 called on April 7374211

The weather is cool and windy rather than cold: the government gives a range from 75°F (24°C) in January to 23°F (-5°C) in July, and summer days usually run 46°F to 68°F (8°C to 20°C).4344 Our Stanley guide has the monthly averages. Winter visits work too: snow rarely lingers, gentoos and kings stay, and Stanley is open all year.36

What are the best places to visit in the Falkland Islands?

Start with Volunteer Point, home to almost all the islands' king penguins, and Sea Lion Island, home to 95% of their elephant seals; the rest depends on whether you arrive by ship or plane.4137

PlaceGetting thereWhy go
Gypsy Cove4 miles (6.5 km) from Stanley, on foot, by taxi or cruise-day shuttleMagellanic penguins on a white sand bay in a National Nature Reserve452
Volunteer PointAbout 2.5 hours each way by 4x4 from Stanley, the last 12 miles off-roadThe king penguin colony, with gentoos and Magellanics; a local guide and the landowner's permission are required104647
Sea Lion IslandFIGAS flight; lodge for 20 guestsElephant seals, sea lions, three penguin species, orcas in early summer3337
Saunders IslandExpedition landing, or a FIGAS flight to one of three places to stayAll five penguin species and albatrosses; Port Egmont, the first British settlement, from 176548
West Point IslandThe most visited expedition landingBlack-browed albatrosses and rockhoppers; Cliff Mountain is the highest cliff in the Falklands84
Carcass IslandExpedition landing, or a stay at Carcass Island HouseRodent-free, so full of ground-nesting birds such as the endemic Cobb's wren, plus gentoos and Magellanics49
New IslandExpedition ships; land stays only for visitors spending several weeksRun by the charity Falklands Conservation; FIGAS carries at most three adults there, and weather can stop landings for days50

From November 1, 2026 to March 31, 2027, Volunteer Point opens 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and closes on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, which does not affect cruise excursions.47 Bleaker and Pebble islands add more penguin colonies, and Pebble has the longest beach in the Falklands, Elephant Beach, at 4 miles (6.4 km).5142

What wildlife will you see in the Falkland Islands?

Penguins first: five species breed here, and the islands hold more gentoos than anywhere else on Earth.1

SpeciesFalklands populationWhen they are ashoreEasiest places to see them
Gentoo penguin121,500 pairs in the 2010 census, at about 85 coloniesAll year; eggs in October, chicks go to sea in late FebruaryYorke Bay near Stanley, Volunteer Point, Bleaker and Sea Lion islands121475137

Macaroni penguin24 pairs at 12 sitesSummer, among rockhoppersAsk locally for recent sightings521

The Falklands also hold 70% of the world's black-browed albatrosses, about 500,000 pairs, nesting from September to April; most breed on Steeple Jason and Beauchêne Island, and visitors see them at West Point and Saunders.40848 Sea Lion Island holds 95% of the islands' elephant seals, and from mid-November to late December killer whales hunt its shallows for pups.3710

Bird flu is the current caveat. Highly pathogenic avian influenza has been confirmed in gentoo colonies since March 2025, including at Volunteer Point and at Yorke Bay and Sparrow Cove near Stanley; the Volunteer Point restrictions were lifted on December 1, 2025.53 On the government's latest list, dated March 5, 2026, Cape Dolphin and Beauchêne Island were closed to the public and Pebble Island had access restrictions, all due for review.53 Expect to disinfect your boots at each site, and check closures before you book.54 Our penguin species guide compares the region's penguins.

Can Americans visit the Falkland Islands, and is it safe?

Yes to both. Americans need no visa: the United States is not on the government's list of nationalities that must apply for one.55 Immigration stamps a visitor permit, valid for up to one month, in your passport on arrival; you need a return ticket or the money to buy one, pre-booked accommodation, enough funds for the stay and medical insurance covering air evacuation to at least USD 2,000,000.55 Your passport must be valid for the whole stay.18

The UK government describes crime as low and disorder as rare.17 The islands have been mine-free since November 2020, and no civilian has ever been hurt by a landmine there.18 The real risks are remoteness and roads: complex medical cases may be evacuated to Chile or Uruguay, and the UK warns of frequent accidents on the road from Mount Pleasant to Stanley.17

Where are the Falkland Islands, and who owns them?

They lie in the South Atlantic about 400 miles (640 km) from the South American mainland, and they are a British Overseas Territory that governs itself except for defense and foreign affairs.43 The archipelago is East and West Falkland plus 778 smaller islands, about 4,700 square miles (12,200 km²) in all; South Georgia is 870 miles (1,400 km) to the southeast, which is why so many Antarctic voyages stop here.4356

The 2021 census counted 3,662 residents, 2,974 of them in Stanley.57 Argentina claims the islands and invaded on April 2, 1982; British forces retook them on June 14, after 74 days, and nearly 1,000 lives were lost.43 In 2013, 99.8% of those who voted chose to remain a UK territory, and the islands pay their own way, mostly from fishing, farming and tourism.43 Islanders find the name "Malvinas" "highly offensive"; in Spanish, the government asks you to say Islas Falkland.18

What are the rules for visiting wildlife?

The government's Countryside Code applies everywhere, and breaking it can mean a fine:58

  • Stay outside colonies and at least 20 ft (6 m) from wildlife, and never block an animal's path to the sea.
  • Never feed, touch or chase animals; turn off your flash and leave selfie sticks in your bag.
  • Ask before entering private land, which is most land, and leave gates as you find them. Drones need the landowner's permission.18
  • Whalebones, skulls and eggs may not be exported.
  • Bring no meat, unpasteurized dairy, eggs, uncooked vegetables or some fruits, and clean boots and gear between sites.59

Two less obvious rules: a Starlink terminal needs a £180-a-year government license, and Volunteer Point is a no-smoking area.1847

Who should skip the Falkland Islands?

Skip a fly-in trip if you cannot spare a full week or need firm schedules: FIGAS times are set the afternoon before, and the airbridge is subject to last-minute changes.313 Skip the islands if you came south for ice, because they are grassy hills and wildflowers rather than glaciers.7 Skip the big-ship option if you want penguins at close range on the outer islands.2 Everyone else should consider a voyage that pairs the islands with South Georgia; how to choose an Antarctica cruise and the best time to visit Antarctica help with the rest.
