Stanley

Stanley, capital of the Falkland Islands, on a cruise day: getting ashore, what to see on foot, penguins nearby, shore excursions and prices, and the weather month by month.

What is Stanley in the Falkland Islands, and what can you do there?

Stanley is the capital of the Falkland Islands, a waterfront town of 2,974 people on East Falkland and the one stop every Falklands cruise makes. Passengers average 4.9 hours ashore: enough for Christ Church Cathedral, the Whalebone Arch, the Historic Dockyard Museum and the Magellanic penguins at Gypsy Cove, 4 miles (6.5 km) away. Summer highs average 56°F (13°C).

Facts checked October 15, 2026 against 31 sources.

By cruise ship: large ships tender to the Jetty Visitor Centre, smaller ones berth at the FIPASS floating dock with shuttle buses to town. By air: fly to Mount Pleasant Airport and take the pre-booked bus to your accommodation.
Wildlife
Magellanic penguins at Gypsy Cove, 4 miles (6.5 km) from town, from early September to mid-April; gentoos beyond Yorke Bay; rockhoppers at Murrell Farm; king penguins at Volunteer Point, about 2.5 hours away by four-wheel drive.
Landings
Ashore by tender, zodiac or the FIPASS floating dock. Countryside Code: stay at least 20 ft (6 m) from wildlife and ask before entering private land; follow bird flu biosecurity guidance at penguin colonies.

Stanley is the capital of the Falkland Islands, a harbor town on East Falkland where 2,974 of the islands' 3,662 people lived at the 2021 census.1 It has been the capital since 1845 and was granted city status in 2022, but the tourist board itself calls it "village-sized".23 Every cruise ship that visits the Falklands schedules a stop here, so for most travelers Stanley is the Falklands: a day of about five hours ashore, split between the waterfront, the museum and a penguin beach a few miles out of town.45

How do cruise passengers get ashore in Stanley?

By tender or by the floating dock. Large ships anchor in the harbor and run tenders to pontoons directly in front of the Jetty Visitor Centre, on Ross Road at Philomel Street; smaller ships berth at FIPASS, the floating dock a few minutes' drive away, and courtesy shuttle buses run to the centre.46 Some ships bring passengers ashore by zodiac instead.4

The Jetty Visitor Centre is the place to start. It hands out street maps, has Wi-Fi, restrooms and a shop, and opens longer than its normal summer hours (weekdays 10 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m., Saturdays 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Sundays 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.) whenever a ship is in.6 Ship calls in the 2025-26 schedule typically ran from 7 or 8 a.m. to 5 or 6 p.m.7 Passengers spent 4.9 hours ashore on average; those on large ships stayed 5.2 hours and expedition passengers 4.7.5

Some days are crowded. On February 7, 2026, three ships with room for 5,834 passengers were scheduled into a city of under 3,000 people, and the 2,850-passenger Celebrity Equinox called seven times in the season.71 The tourist board notes that many hands turn to when a large ship calls, that advance booking is essential to be sure of a tour on a busy day, and that some destinations are only open to pre-booked tours.4

What is there to do in Stanley?

Walk the waterfront. Stanley is easily explored on foot, the main sights sit in the center along Ross Road, and guides offer vehicle tours for anyone who cannot walk far.83

SightWhat it isPractical notes
Christ Church CathedralThe world's most southerly Anglican cathedral, consecrated in 1892, with a ring of five bells, stained glass and needlepoint kneelers showing island lifeOpen daily all year; services on Sundays93
Whalebone ArchBuilt in 1933 from the jawbones of two blue whales, for the centenary of continuous British administrationNext to the cathedral; always open10

Victory Green and Government HouseThe mizzen mast of the SS Great Britain stands on the green; Government House is the governor's residence and gardenSeafront walk3
Pioneer Row and Drury StreetSettlers' kit cottages, now mostly private homes; Cartmell Cottage belongs to the museumCartmell Cottage opens on request311

Along the front you will also pass red telephone and post boxes, Kay's Gnome Garden and memorials to the Battle of the Falkland Islands of the First World War; the Philatelic Bureau sells stamps for collectors and for postcards home.38 Oceanwide includes museum admission on its Stanley call and points out the century-old clipper ships nearby.13 For lunch there are cafes, pubs and restaurants, a gin distillery and diddle-dee jam to take home, and shops sell hand-knitted and felted Falkland wool.8

Can you see penguins from Stanley?

Yes, without booking a tour. Gypsy Cove, 4 miles (6.5 km) from town in the Cape Pembroke National Nature Reserve, has Magellanic penguins nesting in burrows above a sheltered white sand beach, plus night-herons, steamer ducks and the remains of Second World War guns on Ordnance Point.14 The Magellanics are there from early September to mid-April.15 You can walk, take a taxi, or ride the small buses that run back and forth on busy cruise days.48

Further out on the same peninsula, a gentoo colony sits beyond Yorke Bay Pond, and Cape Pembroke Lighthouse marks the easternmost point of the Falklands, just over 7 miles (11 km) east of Stanley: about a three-hour hike, or a drive along a track, with a memorial to the Atlantic Conveyor, a ship lost in 1982, nearby.816 Bird flu was confirmed in the York Bay gentoo colony in August 2025, and on the government's March 2026 list the advice there was to follow its biosecurity guidelines: check, clean and disinfect your boots before and after each site.1718

Rockhopper and king penguins need a tour. Rockhoppers nest at Murrell Farm, a short drive from town, which features on many cruise itineraries.19 The islands' king penguins are at Volunteer Point, about 2.5 hours each way by four-wheel drive, the last 12 miles (19 km) of it across open grassland, so it uses most of a port day.20

Which shore excursions are offered in Stanley?

Ships sell their own, and most follow the same pattern: a town tour, a walk, a farm and penguins. These are the prices one line lists for 2026-27:

HX excursion from StanleyWhat it coversPrice per person
Port Stanley HighlightsTwo-hour guided coach tour of the city$9021
Community WalkGuided stroll through town and its history$9021
Mt William HikeHike over two historic peaks above Stanley$11921
Fitzroy Farm VisitWorking farm with sheepdogs, shearing and a traditional "smoko"$13621
Volunteer PointFour-wheel-drive trip to the king penguins$33821

Prices are from HX's Antarctica and Falklands voyage page, read on October 14, 2026.2122 Some lines include a tour in the fare: Seabourn includes a Port Stanley Highlights Experience and sells Volunteer Point, Kelp Point, Bertha's Beach and a "74 Days to Victory" battlefield tour as extras, and Viking includes one shore excursion in every port.2324 Independent travelers can find guides through the Jetty Visitor Centre.8

What is the weather like in Stanley each month?

Cool all year, rarely hot and rarely freezing hard. The longest station record we found, from Stanley's own weather station, puts January's average high at 56°F (13°C) and July's at 40°F (4°C):25

MonthAverage highAverage lowRain

December54°F (12.2°C)39°F (3.9°C)2.8 in (71 mm)

These are averages of temperatures from 1945 to 1970 and rainfall from 1929 to 1970, which add up to about 27 inches (681 mm) a year.25 We could not find a more recent official monthly table; a Stanley tour operator gives the same picture, with summer days of 46°F to 68°F (8°C to 20°C), winters of 34°F to 50°F (1°C to 10°C) and very little snow.26

Does it get warm? Rarely. The hottest day in that record reached 76°F (24.4°C), in January, and the tourist board gives a summer maximum of 77°F (25°C).251 Wind is the bigger factor, along with fast changes that locals call "four seasons in one day", so bring layers, a waterproof jacket and sunscreen, which the government says is essential because it is very easy to burn.27

What should you know before going ashore?

  • Money: the Falkland Islands pound is worth the same as sterling, US dollars are widely accepted, and euros work in some places.28 The only bank, Standard Chartered on Ross Road, opens on weekdays, and the only ATM, at the Stanley Services fuel station on Bypass Road, works only in business hours.27
  • Phones: there is 4G in Stanley, and the visitor centre has Wi-Fi.276
  • Names: the government asks visitors not to use "Malvinas", which it says is "considered highly offensive here".27
  • Wildlife: the Countryside Code asks you to stay at least 20 ft (6 m) from wildlife and to ask before entering private land.29
  • Dates: Liberation Day, June 14, and Remembrance Sunday bring services at the cathedral and parades, as does the King's birthday on November 14.9

How do you get to Stanley if you are not on a cruise?

Fly to Mount Pleasant Airport, on LATAM's Saturday flight from Santiago via Punta Arenas or the UK airbridge, then take the pre-booked bus, which drops you at your accommodation in Stanley.30 Stanley has hotels, guest houses, bed and breakfasts and self-catering homes, and its small airport is the hub for the government's inter-island flights, so island-hopping trips by air start here.331 For permits, flights, lodges and the full wildlife guide, see our Falkland Islands page; for voyages that call here, see how to choose an Antarctica cruise.

A short history of Stanley

A small, permanent British administration was set up in the islands in the 1830s, and Stanley became the capital in 1845.2 Argentine forces occupied the islands from April 2 to June 14, 1982, a war in which nearly 1,000 lives were lost, and June 14 is still marked as Liberation Day.29 The town has been twinned since 1981 with Whitby in England, for their shared whaling history, and since 2022 with Portsmouth; a painting of Whitby's own whalebone arch hangs in the museum.3
