What is Punta Arenas, and how do you get to Antarctica from there?

Punta Arenas is a Chilean port city of about 132,000 people on the Strait of Magellan and the main gateway for Antarctic air-cruises: a charter flight of about two hours to King George Island replaces the Drake Passage crossing. Eight-day air-cruises from here start at $13,795. Fly in from Santiago in about 3 hours 20 minutes, and see Magdalena Island's penguins from October to March.

Punta Arenas is a Chilean port city on the Strait of Magellan, in the Magallanes and Chilean Antarctica region; its commune counted 132,363 people at the 2024 census.12 For Antarctic travelers it is the main fly-cruise gateway: charter planes leave here for a flight of about two hours to King George Island, where a ship waits, cutting out both crossings of the Drake Passage.34 Chile's national Antarctic institute, INACH, has had its headquarters here since 2003, and the city is also the stop for the weekly flight to the Falkland Islands and the start of Australis cruises to Ushuaia.567

How do you get to Punta Arenas?

Fly from Santiago. Presidente Carlos Ibáñez del Campo Airport (PUQ) has direct flights from the Chilean capital and seasonal connections to Argentina, and JetSMART lists the flight at about 3 hours 20 minutes.28 The airport sits on Route 9, about 12 miles (19 to 20 km) northwest of the city; take a bus, taxi or transfer into the center.92 By land, buses cover the 155 miles (250 km) from Puerto Natales, the base for Torres del Paine, in about three hours.210

US citizens do not need a visa for Chile: the Foreign Ministry's visa table lists the United States with no visa and no fee for stays of up to 90 days, and the tourist permit cannot be used for paid work.1112 Officials may ask for proof of funds of at least USD 46 a day, and animal and plant products must be declared on the agriculture service (SAG) form.13

How do you get from Punta Arenas to Antarctica?

By air-cruise. You fly from Punta Arenas to the Teniente Rodolfo Marsh airfield, part of Chile's Eduardo Frei base complex on King George Island, in the South Shetland Islands, board an expedition ship there and sail the Antarctic Peninsula, then fly back.143 Antarctica21, which was formed in Punta Arenas and is still based there, describes the flight as about two hours, against two days each way by sea.15 In the 2025-26 season, IAATO operators ran 126 air-cruise voyages to the Peninsula for 11,764 passengers, supported by 170 southbound flights into the Teniente Rodolfo Marsh airstrip; most Antarctic visitors still sail, with 401 traditional seaborne voyages that season.16

These are the air-cruises from Punta Arenas we priced for 2026-27, cheapest first. Fares are per person, two sharing, and include the flights:

There is also a one-day option. Aerovías DAP, which has flown to King George Island since 1989, sells a Full Day Antarctica trip at USD 7,060 per person: about two hours each way in a BAe 146 carrying 70 passengers, and about five hours on the ground visiting the Villa Las Estrellas settlement, the Orthodox church at Russia's Bellingshausen base, China's Great Wall base and an elephant seal colony, with eight dates from December 4, 2026 to March 16, 2027.232425 The price includes four hotel nights, because weather can push the flight across a three-day window; if the flight is canceled for weather, DAP refunds the fare minus a 20% non-refundable fee.26

Plan around the weather. Antarctica21 requires you to be in Punta Arenas by 2 p.m. on day 1, and anyone who misses that deadline loses the trip without a refund.27 Before the flight, its guests are briefed, try on expedition gear and practice zodiac boarding at Explorers House, a converted wool warehouse of more than 21,500 sq ft (2,000 m²).28 For how flying compares with sailing, see fly or sail the Drake Passage and flights to Antarctica.

Which Antarctic cruises start or end in Punta Arenas?

Some sea voyages use the city too. HX flies guests from Santiago to embark the Fram here for its In-depth South Georgia and its South Georgia and Falklands voyages, the latter from $10,731 on March 12, 2027.2930 Aurora's January 8, 2027 South Georgia voyage and its February 13, 2027 Antarctic Circle voyage sail from Ushuaia and finish in Punta Arenas.3132 Quark's Fly South, Sail North flies out of Punta Arenas and sails back to Ushuaia.33 Holland America's 22-day South America and Antarctica cruises call here between Buenos Aires and Chile's central coast.34 Silversea launched its Antarctic fly cruises from Punta Arenas, but from 2026-27 they fly from Puerto Williams, where its 150-room hotel, The Cormorant at 55 South, is due to take its first guests on October 19, 2026.353637 Only two of its 40 Antarctic departures that season touch Punta Arenas, both on Silver Cloud: a 15-day voyage from Puerto Williams on January 18, 2027, from $33,700 per guest with the All-Inclusive Plus fare, and a 10-day voyage to Puerto Williams on February 2, 2027, from $17,200 per guest with a non-refundable Last-Minute fare.3839

Where can you see penguins near Punta Arenas?

On Magdalena Island, 22 miles (35 km) northeast of the city in the Strait of Magellan, part of the Los Pingüinos Natural Monument.40 It is a Magellanic penguin colony, but a smaller one than many tour pages suggest: the park service CONAF puts it at about 7,000 breeding pairs, and its regional director confirmed that figure in March 2026, while the ferry operator's page still says 69,000.404142

The island is open October to April, and boats run from October to mid-April.40 CONAF's rules are strict: a 0.9-mile (1.4 km) trail, at most one hour ashore, at least 6.5 ft (2 m) from the penguins, entry only with certified guides, no drones, and no landing on neighboring Isla Marta.40 Comapa refunds the boat trip if weather cancels it.43

What are the best things to do in Punta Arenas?

The center is compact, and several of the city's sights are protected national monuments:

SightWhat to know
Plaza Muñoz GameroThe main square, a protected historic zone since 1991, with INACH's headquarters on one side455
Hernando de Magallanes monumentA 33 ft (10 m) bronze unveiled in 1920 for the strait's 400th anniversary; local legend says that if you do not kiss the toe of the Patagonian figure, you will not come back with good fortune46
Sara Braun Municipal CemeteryFounded in 1894, cypress-lined and a national monument since 2012; foreign visitors pay CLP 5,000, daily 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. from September 1, 2026 to April 30, 20274748
Fuerte Bulnes and Parque del EstrechoRebuilt fort on the site of Chile's 1843 claim to the strait, 32 to 36 miles (52 to 58 km) south; allow 3 to 4 hours in the park; foreign adults CLP 20,000495051
Museo Regional de MagallanesClosed: the Braun Menéndez mansion that houses it shut on June 1, 2023 for a restoration expected to take at least three years5253

Chile's official tourism board also singles out the Nao Victoria Museum, a full-scale replica of Magellan's ship.2 Fuerte Bulnes is also where the city began: settlers moved north from the fort in 1848 and founded Punta Arenas.49 Further afield, Torres del Paine National Park is about 250 miles (400 km) away by road via Puerto Natales.54

How do you get from Punta Arenas to Ushuaia?

By ship or by bus. Australis sails Punta Arenas to Ushuaia in 5 days and 4 nights through the fjords of Tierra del Fuego, with landings planned at Ainsworth Bay, Tuckers Islets, Pía Glacier, Cape Horn and Wulaia Bay, on ships of up to 200 passengers.755 Fares are all-inclusive, per person sharing: $3,066 in a B cabin in low season, $3,997 in high season, and $1,955 on the one promotional date still open, April 1, 2027; solo travelers pay 50% more.7 The reverse route, Ushuaia to Punta Arenas, adds a landing on Magdalena Island.56

Bus-Sur's bus takes about 11 hours, longer if the border formalities are slow, and runs Monday, Wednesday and Friday from September to April, from CLP 62,000 one way.10 If you drive, the shortest crossing of the strait is TABSA's 25-minute ferry at Primera Angostura, its narrowest point.57

What is the weather like in Punta Arenas?

Cool, windy and drier than you might expect. Chile's tourism board describes a subpolar oceanic climate with low temperatures and strong winds, and the official 1991 to 2020 averages from the airport weather station show summer highs near 59°F (15°C), winter highs near 40°F (4°C) and only 15.3 inches (389 mm) of rain a year:258

The Antarctic air-cruise season, late November to early March, matches the city's warmest and sunniest months.358

How many days should you spend in Punta Arenas?

At least one night before an air-cruise, and more if you want Magdalena Island or Torres del Paine. Most air-cruises already include a hotel night at each end: Antarctica21's Classic includes two nights at the Cabo de Hornos Hotel or similar, and Quark's Fly the Drake includes hotel nights in Punta Arenas.34 Because the Antarctic flight can slip for weather, keep your return flight home flexible; DAP tells its day-trip passengers to allow a three-day window.1526 If you are deciding between this gateway and Argentina's, our Ushuaia guide covers the sea route, and how to get to Antarctica compares the options.
