Can you fly to Antarctica?

Who flies tourists to Antarctica in 2026-27, from fly-cruises and day trips to King George Island to jets bound for the South Pole and sightseeing flights from Australia, with fares, flight times and weather-delay rules.

Christopher Michel, Wikimedia Commons, CC BY 4.0

The short answer

Yes, but not on an airline ticket: every tourist flight we found is a private charter sold as part of a trip. Most fly about two hours from southern Chile to King George Island, where a ship waits; fly-cruises with flights both ways start at $12,217 per person for 8 days in 2026-27. DAP's day trip from Punta Arenas costs $7,060, and White Desert's from Cape Town $16,500.

Facts checked October 15, 2026 against 39 sources.

You can fly to Antarctica, but not by buying a seat from an airline. Every tourist flight we found is a private charter sold as part of a trip: a fly-cruise or day trip to King George Island off the Antarctic Peninsula, a jet to a camp deep in the interior, or a sightseeing flight from Australia that never lands. The U.S. State Department puts it plainly: "There is no direct air service from the United States to Antarctica," and most flights that do operate "are reserved for government personnel and scientists."1

Plenty of people fly anyway. In the 2025-26 season, 170 southbound flights landed on King George Island to support 126 air-cruise voyages, which carried 11,764 passengers.2 IAATO's deep-field and air operators carried another 1,106 clients: 79 on DAP's King George Island day trips and the rest with ALE, White Desert and Ultima Expeditions, which fly to camps in the interior.3

What airlines fly to Antarctica?

None sells a scheduled ticket. Tour operators charter the aircraft, and you get a seat by booking their trip:

DAP's partnership claims come from the lines themselves: Lindblad and Antarctica21 both name DAP as their airline, and Silversea's flights from Puerto Williams are run by "our airline partner, DAP Antarctic Airways."1367 Lindblad flies from Puerto Natales; Quark, Aurora and Atlas also fly their fly-cruise guests from Punta Arenas.13141516

Government flights are not an option. The U.S. Antarctic Program, which sends about 3,000 people south a year, does not offer "space-available" passage on its aircraft or support tourism, so you cannot hitch a ride to McMurdo Station.17

Can you fly to Antarctica from Argentina?

Not on any tourist flight we found for 2026-27: every fly-cruise charter leaves from Chile. From Ushuaia you can sail one way and fly the other. Antarctica21's 6-day Antarctica Express sails south from Ushuaia and flies you back from King George Island to Punta Arenas, from $7,495 for a men's shared berth on November 17, 2026, and Lindblad's 10-day Sail and Fly the Drake Passage sails from Ushuaia and flies back to Puerto Natales.2113 A newcomer reports to Argentina: at its 2025 annual meeting IAATO accepted Voyal, a provisional member that files its notices with Argentina's Antarctic authority and plans flights to Dundee Island (IAATO's report does not say from where). It had carried no tourists by May 2026, and IAATO's preliminary estimate for 2026-27 lists it with 100 clients.3

Can you legally fly to Antarctica?

Yes, with an operator that handles the paperwork. The Antarctic Treaty requires advance notice of every trip south of 60°S; in the US the organizer files it with the State Department, and travelers on a private trip must email the State Department themselves at least 3 months ahead.1 ALE, White Desert and DAP are all IAATO members, and Antarctica Flights says its sightseeing flights are approved by all Antarctic Treaty nations.1819 The Australian sightseeing flights are classed as domestic, so you need government photo ID, not a passport.19

How much does it cost to fly to Antarctica?

From $7,060 to land for a day, $12,217 for the cheapest fly-cruise with flights both ways ($7,495 if you sail one way), and $16,500 to $115,500 for the interior.20242122 These are the lowest 2026-27 fares we found on the operators' own pages, per person, two sharing unless noted, read October 14 and 15, 2026:

Advertised "from" prices are not always bookable. Antarctica21's Classic page heads its 8-day air-cruise "Starting from $13,795", but no 2026-27 departure in its booking engine has that price: the Classic starts at $15,995, and with both $15,995 dates taken, the cheapest cabin we could book was a $21,995 Deluxe Veranda on March 2, 2027.3021 For whether the time saved is worth the price, see fly or sail the Drake Passage.

What happens if bad weather delays the flight?

You wait, sometimes for days, and the operator's written rules decide what you get back. Antarctica21's published record of 346 flights shows 56, about one in six, leaving one to three days late, by our count.6 Antarctica21, Lindblad and Silversea refund the cruise fare if the flight south never leaves; Quark does not, and Aurora's page says only that the voyage is cancelled. The rules, from each operator's terms:

OperatorWhile you waitIf the flight south never goesSlack to build in
Antarctica21 (Classic)Attempts until 2 PM on day 4, with meals and hotel in Punta Arenas; tours or other services as circumstances allow38Trip interrupted: 100% of the cruise fare refunded, one hotel night with breakfast, airport transfer on day 538Check in before 2 PM on day 1, as the flight may be brought forward to that afternoon or evening; a late flight home keeps you cruising, with no refund3038
LindbladAttempts until 2 p.m. on day 3; tours of Puerto Natales, with breakfast and lunch on day 213Trip canceled: 100% of the cruise fare and internal air refunded13Check in by 3 p.m. on day 1; book onward flights from Puerto Natales no earlier than 1 p.m. on the last day13
SilverseaUp to three days of attempts; extra nights at The Cormorant hotel in Puerto Williams, with food, drinks and activities, at Silversea's cost7No flight by 2:00 p.m. on the third day: the Antarctic part may be cancelled, with a full refund of the cruise fare and all monies paid7Flexible onward travel; flights and hotels you booked yourself are not refunded7
QuarkAttempts up to and including day 4 of Fly the Drake; standby from your hotel39Treated as force majeure: no refund of the fare, one extra hotel night, possibly a trip interruption letter for your insurer39Be in Punta Arenas by 3:00 pm on day 139
AuroraHotel and full board in Punta Arenas on days 2 to 4, with guided excursions where possible31No authorization by 6:00 a.m. on day 4: the voyage is cancelled31If the return flight cannot go within 72 hours, the ship sails to Puerto Williams31
DAP day tripFour hotel nights are included; allow a 3-day flight window32After 3 full days, refund minus a non-refundable 20%32The 3-day window32
ALEFlights leave when weather and runway allow8Delay costs are yours; flights are not held for late passengers8Three nights in Punta Arenas before; no commitments for a week after8
White DesertDates can move, lengthening or shortening the trip10Missed South Pole flight: $10,000 back; missed emperor flight: $5,000; no other refunds once the trip starts10Two days in Cape Town before and after33

When several operators are waiting at once, DAP gives priority to the guests who have been delayed longest, according to Silversea.7 None of these refunds covers your own flights to the gateway or home, so buy insurance that covers delays and interruptions and book changeable tickets.387 The fly or sail guide linked above weighs this risk against two days each way on the Drake.

Can you fly to the South Pole?

Yes, with ALE or White Desert, and 336 people did so with IAATO's operators in 2025-26.3 ALE flies from Union Glacier to the Pole by ski plane in 4 to 5.5 hours, depending on the aircraft, and spends 2 to 3 hours there, where temperatures run from -31°F to -13°F (-35°C to -25°C).8 White Desert's Basler flies five hours from its camps to Dixie's Camp at 83°S to refuel, then two more hours to the Pole, and brings guests back to Dixie's to sleep in expedition tents.343536 The fares are $66,750 for ALE's 6-day trip and $95,000 to $115,500 for White Desert's 7-day trips.2822

Can you fly over Antarctica without landing?

Yes, from Australia, on a day out that costs far less than any landing. Antarctica Flights, run by the tour company Captain's Choice with Qantas as the operating airline, has flown sightseeing trips since 1994, over 150 of them.1237 The 787 flies about 5,900 to 6,500 miles (9,500 to 10,500 km) round trip in about 12.5 hours, about four of them over the Antarctic Treaty area and three to four over the continent itself. The route is picked from 19 flight plans, partly to find the best viewing if the weather is poor.11 Fares run from AUD 1,399 for an Explorer seat with no window access to AUD 8,999 for Business Deluxe, with a non-refundable AU$500 deposit.2912 The 2026-27 dates are November 15 and December 31 from Melbourne, November 22 and February 14 from Sydney, November 29 and February 21 from Brisbane, and January 26 from Perth.37

Should you fly to Antarctica?

  • Short of time, and you want landings and wildlife: a fly-cruise to King George Island. Silversea's 6-day voyage is the shortest we found with flights both ways, though with its Santiago and Puerto Williams nights the trip runs 10 days from Santiago; Antarctica21's 8-day Classic starts and ends in Punta Arenas.2530
  • You only want to stand on the continent: DAP's day trip, at $7,060, with a three-day weather window.2032
  • The South Pole or emperor penguins: ALE from Punta Arenas or White Desert from Cape Town.
  • You live in Australia and want the view: an Antarctica Flights seat, from AUD 1,399.29
  • Price matters more than time: sail from Ushuaia instead; see Antarctica cruises from Ushuaia.

Every route, by sea and air, is compared in how to get to Antarctica.
