Antarctica21
An independent look at Antarctica21, the Chilean pioneer of the Antarctic air-cruise: how its Punta Arenas flights work, what happens when weather grounds them, its two ships, and 2026-27 fares.
Is Antarctica21 a good way to see Antarctica?
Yes, if you want to fly over the Drake Passage rather than sail it. Antarctica21, founded in Chile in 2003, pioneered the air-cruise: a two-hour flight from Punta Arenas to King George Island to meet a ship of at most 88 guests. Its 8-day Classic starts at $15,995 per person for 2026-27, and if weather grounds the flight south past 2 PM on day 4, it refunds the cruise fare.
Facts checked October 15, 2026 against 35 sources.

Is Antarctica21 a good company for Antarctica?
Yes, if what you want most is to skip the sea crossing of the Drake Passage and travel in a small group. Antarctica21 is a Chilean company that IAATO, the Antarctic tour operators' association, lists under "air cruise operations" and credits with pioneering the Antarctic fly and cruise model.1 It was founded in Punta Arenas in 2003 as ANTARCTICA XXI, joined IAATO that year and took its current name in 2018.2 It says it has operated more Antarctic flights over the Drake than all other expedition companies combined, and it publishes its flight record, the only fly-cruise line we found that does.3
We have not traveled with Antarctica21 and do not quote guest reviews. What can be checked is the record: 22 years of flights, a written promise to refund the cruise fare if the plane never leaves, and two ships of no more than 88 guests built for the air-cruise.3456 The catch is price: the 8-day Classic works out to about $2,000 per person per day at its lowest 2026-27 fare (our arithmetic), and most cheaper cabins were already taken when we checked.7
How long has Antarctica21 been flying to Antarctica?
Since December 2003. The first trip used a 50-seat de Havilland Dash-7 turboprop and Grigoriy Mikheev, a former research ship chartered for one voyage, and carried 13 paying guests, according to the company's president, Jaime Vásquez.8 A Uruguayan Air Force C-130 Hercules took over for two seasons, and the British Aerospace 146 jet arrived in 2009-10, later joined by the newer RJ85 and RJ100.9 The jets are operated by Aerovías DAP, Antarctica21's flight partner since 2003.103 Ocean Nova joined the fleet in 2010, Hebridean Sky in 2015 and the company's first new build, Magellan Explorer, in 2019.2
How does the Antarctica21 air-cruise work?
You fly both ways between Punta Arenas and King George Island, in the South Shetland Islands, where the ship waits. On the 8-day Classic you arrive in Punta Arenas on day 1 and check in before 2 PM at Explorers House, the company's expedition center in a converted wool warehouse, for a mandatory briefing and a welcome dinner.1112 On day 2 a chartered flight of about two hours lands on King George Island; a vehicle takes you past Chile's Frei Station and Russia's Bellingshausen Station to the shore, and a Zodiac takes you to the ship. Days 3 to 6 are landings and Zodiac outings in the South Shetlands and along the west coast of the Antarctic Peninsula; on day 7 you fly back to a hotel night in Punta Arenas, and on day 8 you head home.11
The planes are high-wing BAE 146-200, Avro RJ85 and Avro RJ100 jets, built in Britain and suited to short runways.10 They land on gravel: Chile's civil aviation authority lists the Teniente Rodolfo Marsh airfield's runway at 4,239 by 128 ft (1,292 by 39 m).13 Antarctica21 puts the flight at up to 2.5 hours, flies each group on one plane in each direction, and says it has priority over the flight window.314 Bags are limited to 55 lb (25 kg) per person including hand luggage, no piece over 44 lb (20 kg), and extra weight cannot be bought; on Classic and Polar Circle trips the excess waits in Punta Arenas.15
How often are Antarctica21 flights delayed?
About one flight in six leaves late, usually by one day. Antarctica21's record as of April 2025, covering 346 flights:3
| What happened | Flights | Share (our arithmetic, rounded) |
|---|---|---|
| Left on the scheduled day3 | 264 | 76% |
| Left a day early | 26 | 8% |
| Left one day late | 40 | 12% |
| Left two days late | 13 | 4% |
| Left three days late | 3 | 1% |
It blames low cloud, fog, snow, ice and strong wind at King George Island, and says only three flights in 22 years were delayed beyond day 4.3 The record does not separate flights to Antarctica from flights home.
What happens if the flight to Antarctica can't go?
You wait in Punta Arenas with meals and your hotel paid, and if the plane has not left by 2 PM on a fixed deadline day, the trip is called off and 100% of the cruise fare is refunded. That is the contingency plan in Antarctica21's booking terms, version August 4, 2026, for every air-cruise that starts with the flight south. Step by step:4
- Day 1. The flight may be brought forward to the afternoon or evening of the day you arrive. You must reach Punta Arenas by 2 PM that day; arrive later and you cannot join, with no refund.415
- Day 2 until the deadline. If the plane cannot leave on day 2, Antarctica21 keeps trying, weighing the weather, the safety of guests and aircraft, and operations in Antarctica. Meals and accommodation are included, with guided tours to historic and wildlife sites or other services as circumstances allow.43
- 2 PM on the deadline day. The trip is interrupted. You get a hotel night with breakfast and nothing else (in a 3-star hotel, the flights guide says), and Antarctica21, or the agent you booked through, refunds each guest 100% of the cruise fare paid.43
- The next day. Group transfers to the airport; no other services or meals.4
| Air-cruise | Flight attempts until | If it never flies |
|---|---|---|
| Classic, and Antarctica Express from Punta Arenas | 2 PM on day 4 | Cruise fare refunded; airport transfer on day 5 |
| Polar Circle | 2 PM on day 5 | Cruise fare refunded; airport transfer on day 6 |
| Antarctica & South Georgia | 2 PM on day 6 | Cruise fare refunded; airport transfer on day 7 |
Antarctica21's flights guide still lists the Polar Circle with the day-4 deadline; the booking terms, which form the contract, give it until day 5.34 A delay that ends before the deadline earns nothing back: the terms give no right to a refund or other considerations when weather changes the itinerary.4 The refund covers the cruise fare, not your airline tickets: the terms call a tight connection "unwise", recommend a flexible ticket home and urge cancellation and interruption insurance.4
What if the flight back from Antarctica is delayed?
You stay on the ship, and nothing is refunded. Under the terms, the ship keeps cruising nearby, with full board and all excursions, until the flight out is authorized. If the delay passes two days and the forecast or operational needs rule out flying for several more days, the captain may, for safety, sail back to South America, and the trip ends at the airport on arrival. "No refund will be extended for any reason whatsoever," the terms say.4 The return can also be brought forward by up to a day: you leave the ship early, get a hotel on arrival (the Cabo de Hornos or similar, the flights guide says) and keep the other inclusions.43 These rules cover every air-cruise that ends with the flight north, including the Antarctica Express from Ushuaia, which sails south and flies home, and Magellan Discoverer's inaugural trip.4326 A flight home you miss because of the delay is yours to rebook.4
Which ships does Antarctica21 use?
Two ships of its own, both built by the ASENAV yard in Valdivia, Chile: Magellan Explorer, which IAATO calls the only ship purpose-built for air-cruise operations, and its hybrid-electric sister Magellan Discoverer.16 Discoverer had completed sea trials by early October 2026 and is due to take its first guests on December 15, 2026.1617
| Magellan Explorer | Magellan Discoverer | |

Ocean Nova, which Antarctica21 sailed under a charter agreement, left the fleet after 15 seasons, 321 voyages and 14,523 guests, with a farewell in Puerto Williams on February 28, 2026.1817 Every 2026-27 departure is on Explorer or Discoverer, so older reviews of Ocean Nova or Hebridean Sky trips describe ships you cannot book.7 IAATO's preliminary estimate puts the two ships on 38 of the 124 air-cruise voyages its members plan for 2026-27, carrying 2,730 of 13,498 passengers.19
How much does an Antarctica21 cruise cost in 2026-27?
From $5,995 per person on the 6-day Antarctica Express, but that is a Triple Suite shared by three and it was taken; the 8-day Classic starts at $15,995. These are per-person USD fares in Antarctica21's booking engine on October 15, 2026, two sharing unless noted. "Lowest fare" is the figure on each departure card, the last column the cheapest cabin still marked available, and the per-day column our arithmetic.7
| Trip, ship | Days | 2026-27 dates | Lowest fare | Per day | Cheapest open cabin |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Antarctica Express, Explorer, Ushuaia to Punta Arenas7 | 6 | Nov 17 | $5,995, Triple Suite for three | $999 | $7,495 men's shared berth; $7,795 Deluxe Veranda |
| Antarctica Express, Discoverer, Punta Arenas to Ushuaia | 7 | Mar 4 | $6,795, Triple Veranda Suite for three | $971 | $8,495 women's shared berth; $9,995 Grand Veranda Suite |
| Classic, Explorer | 8 | 17 departures, Nov 20 to Mar 2 | $15,995, Porthole, Nov 20 and Mar 2 | $1,999 | $21,995 Deluxe Veranda, Mar 2 |
| Classic, Discoverer | 8 | 12 departures, Dec 22 to Feb 27 | $19,495, Triple Veranda Suite for three, Feb 27 | $2,437 | $23,795 Deluxe Veranda, Feb 27 |
| Polar Circle, Explorer | 10 | Feb 13 | $24,995, Porthole | $2,500 | $24,995 Porthole, one left |
| Polar Circle, Discoverer | 10 | Feb 5 | $29,795, Triple Veranda Suite for three | $2,980 | $34,995 Deluxe Veranda |
| Antarctica & South Georgia, Explorer | 18 | Mar 7 | $17,995, Porthole | $1,000 | $28,995 Penthouse Suite, the only one open |
| Falklands, South Georgia & Antarctica, Explorer | 20 | Oct 28 | $15,995 | $800 | Sold out |
On Explorer the Classic costs $15,995 in a Porthole Cabin on the first and last departures, $18,995 from December to February and $19,995 over the holidays; four of its 17 departures, including all three from December 20 to 30, and both holiday departures on Discoverer were sold out.7 No Porthole or Veranda double was open on any Classic. From December to February the cheapest open option was one berth in a same-gender shared Veranda Cabin, $23,495 on January 14 (men) or February 25 (women). The cheapest private double in those months was a Deluxe Veranda at $23,795 on Discoverer's February 27 departure; on Explorer it was $25,495.7
No 2026-27 discount was on offer. The promotions page listed only 2027-28 deals: up to $4,000 off select Classic air-cruises, from $13,995 instead of $15,995, and up to $1,000 off Patagonia and Falklands sea voyages, from $5,495, both for new bookings confirmed by December 31, 2026.20 The "from $13,795" heading on the Classic page matched no 2026-27 departure in the booking engine; the same figure sits on itinerary cards across the site whatever the trip, including the 18-day South Georgia air-cruise, so treat it as a placeholder, not a fare.1175
Solo travelers pay an 85% supplement in a limited number of Porthole and Veranda cabins on Explorer and Deluxe Veranda cabins on Discoverer, 100% elsewhere, and nothing in the dedicated Single Veranda Cabins.15 The balance is due 120 days out. Cancel 210 or more days ahead and you get the deposit back less $1,000 per person; from 209 to 120 days the deposit is lost; after that only 10%, 7.5% or 5% of what you paid comes back, and nothing in the last 29 days. Fares can also carry fuel or currency surcharges after you have paid in full.4
What is included in an Antarctica21 air-cruise?
The flights, the cruise and most of what surrounds them. Classic and Polar Circle fares include two hotel nights with breakfast in Punta Arenas (the Cabo de Hornos Hotel or similar), group airport transfers, the welcome dinner at Explorers House, all meals on board with wine, beer, soft drinks, coffee and snacks, guided landings and Zodiac outings, loaned waterproof boots, the contingency plan and the IAATO passenger fee.1121 The Express and Antarctica & South Georgia include one Punta Arenas hotel night with breakfast. Their inclusion lists place it on the day of the return flight, but the 2026-27 departures that fly south (the March 4 Express and the March 7 South Georgia trip) have no return flight, and their day-1 itineraries transfer you to a hotel, so ask which night your fare covers.22237 The inclusions do not cover flights to Punta Arenas, meals in town on the return night or the two optional activities.11
Sea kayaking is a program for at most 20 guests a voyage, in two groups of 10 with one or two outings each; you need sea-kayaking experience with a spray skirt and a practiced wet exit, and the money comes back only if no outing happens at all.244 Hiking and snowshoeing needs no experience and is paid per excursion on board; both activities have a minimum age of 15, and their prices sit in downloadable program sheets rather than on the website.244 Medical insurance covering evacuation from Antarctica is compulsory.4
Which Antarctica21 itineraries are there?
Six Antarctic trips for 2026-27, each starting or ending in Punta Arenas.7 Beyond the Classic, the 10-day Polar Circle spends six days in Antarctica trying to reach the Antarctic Circle.21 The 6-day Antarctica Express sails from Ushuaia via Puerto Williams to Cape Horn, crosses the Drake and flies home, or runs in reverse.22 The 18-day Antarctica & South Georgia flies in, then sails past Elephant Island to South Georgia and Grytviken before ending in Ushuaia.23 Two sold out early: a 20-day sea voyage via the Falkland Islands and Stanley, and Magellan Discoverer's 10-day inaugural trip, which sails from Punta Arenas and flies back.25267 Children of 8 and older can join air-cruises, and 12 and older sea voyages.4
Can everyone go ashore at once?
Yes. IAATO allows no more than 100 visitors ashore at one site at a time, and Antarctica21 carries at most 88 guests on an air-cruise, so it lands everyone together.273 For 2025-26 it said it sailed with 76 guests and ran no landing shifts, and Magellan Explorer's 2026-27 deck plan gives a maximum of 76 on air-cruises.285 IAATO's 2026-27 estimate averages about 71 passengers per Explorer air-cruise (1,562 over 22 voyages, our arithmetic).19 Antarctica21 says every voyage carries at least 13 polar guides.14
How does Antarctica21 compare with other fly-cruises?
It has the smallest ships and a more generous refund than Quark, but not the lowest fare. Lowest published 2026-27 fares, per person, two sharing:
| Line and trip | Ship and guests | Flies from | Lowest fare | If the outbound flight never goes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Antarctica21, Classic, 8 days | Magellan Explorer, up to 88 | Punta Arenas | $15,9957 | Attempts to 2 PM on day 4, then 100% of the cruise fare back4 |
| Lindblad, Antarctica Direct, 8 days | National Geographic Explorer, 148 | Puerto Natales | $12,600 including $3,000 of flights, sold out2934 | Attempts to 2 p.m. on day 3, then cruise fare and internal air refunded30 |
| Quark, Antarctic Express: Fly the Drake, 8 days | World Voyager or Ocean Explorer | Punta Arenas | $19,695 brochure fare31 | Attempts to day 4, then force majeure: no refund, one extra hotel night32 |
| Silversea, Fly the Drake, 6 days | Silver Endeavour | Puerto Williams, after a charter from Santiago35 | $13,000, non-refundable Last-Minute fare, Oct 2033 | Up to three days of attempts, to 2 p.m. on the third; then the Antarctic part may be canceled with a full refund of the cruise fare and all money paid35 |
Lindblad's lead-in price is lower but was sold out, and it gives up a day sooner.293430 Quark's contract owes nothing if the plane never goes.32 Silversea refunds in full too, but its cheapest fare is non-refundable if you cancel.3533 Our guide to whether to fly or sail the Drake Passage weighs the two ways across.
Who should not book Antarctica21?
- Travelers on a tight budget. The cheapest open cabin on October 15 was a shared berth on the 6-day Express at $7,495, and an 8-day Classic cost at least $21,995 in a private double.7 For lower-cost trips that sail the Drake, see the cheapest way to Antarctica.
- Anyone with a fixed flight home. The plane can leave a day early or days late, and only the cruise fare is ever refunded.34
- Arctic travelers. Antarctica21 runs trips to Antarctica, the Falklands, South Georgia and Patagonia, and nothing in the north.11
- Families with young children, or anyone who needs a walking aid. Air-cruises take children from 8, and guests must declare they can move without supports or devices.4
Our verdict
The specialist for flying over the Drake: 22 years of Punta Arenas flights with a published delay record, a full cruise-fare refund if the outbound plane never goes, and ships that land all their guests at once. The costs are high fares, few cheap cabins left for 2026-27 and the chance of losing days to weather at either end.
