Grytviken
The South Georgia whaling station where Shackleton is buried: his grave, the museum and church, the government's landing rules and permit fee, and the voyages that call there.
What is Grytviken, and how do you visit it?
Grytviken is the former whaling station on South Georgia where Ernest Shackleton is buried. Every ship visiting the island must call there for customs and biosecurity checks, so it is the island's busiest landing. You can reach it only by ship, with 2026-27 fares from $9,450 per person, plus a £250 government permit (some fares include it); the museum, church and cemetery are free to visit.
Facts checked October 15, 2026 against 27 sources.

Grytviken is the abandoned whaling station at the head of King Edward Cove on South Georgia, where Sir Ernest Shackleton is buried, and it is the one landing every visiting ship must make.12 Opened in 1904 as the island's first whaling station, it now holds the South Georgia Museum, a Norwegian whalers' church still in use, a post office, a cemetery where 65 people are buried and the rusting factory itself, the only former whaling station on South Georgia that visitors may walk through.4571 There is no airport and no hotel: you arrive by ship, and the government's officers meet you here.192
Where is Grytviken?
Grytviken sits on the northeast coast of South Georgia, at the head of King Edward Cove, a sheltered inlet of Cumberland East Bay, under Mount Duse and Mount Hodges, which rises to 1,985 feet (605 m).1 Across the cove, about 0.6 miles (1 km) along a track, is King Edward Point, the government and British Antarctic Survey station.117 The name comes from the sealers' cast iron trypots, "gryter" in Norwegian, which gave the cove its name, Boiler Cove; some of them stand in front of the museum.12
What is there to see at Grytviken?
Visitors may roam freely within the station and around to the cemetery, and everything below is a short walk from the landing beach in front of the museum:1
- Shackleton's grave, in the whalers' cemetery, a 10-minute walk from the museum.5
- The whalers' church, built of wood in Norwegian style and consecrated on Christmas Day 1913; it holds the whalers' original library, memorials to Shackleton and others, and a bust of the station's founder, Carl Anton Larsen, and it is the only building at Grytviken still used for its original purpose.5 In 2024-25 it hosted a wedding and four services.14
- The South Georgia Museum, in the station manager's villa, free to enter.10
- The post office, behind the museum, selling stamps, postcards and first day covers.1
- The whaling station, with its oil tanks and exposed machinery, and the old sealing ships Dias and Albatros beached at the water's edge.4117
- Wildlife: King Edward Cove is a haul-out and breeding beach for fur seals and elephant seals, and king penguins, South Georgia pintails, pipits, kelp gulls and Antarctic terns turn up too.1
Some ships add the marked walk between Maiviken and Grytviken, which 1,176 passengers took in 2022-23, most of them out and back from Grytviken.151
Where is Shackleton buried, and can you visit his grave?
Shackleton is buried in Grytviken's cemetery, and you can visit his grave: the cemetery is open to anyone at any time, and most visitors to South Georgia come to see it.7 He died of a heart attack aboard his ship Quest in King Edward Cove on January 5, 1922, aged 47.64 His body was on its way home to Britain when, in Montevideo, word came that Lady Shackleton wished him to be buried on South Georgia, "the scene of his greatest exploits".6 He was buried on March 5, 1922, after a service in the whalers' church, his coffin carried by six men from the Shetland Islands.6
The grave faces south rather than the traditional east, in recognition of his lifelong Antarctic aspirations, according to the museum.6 Its granite headstone, carved in Edinburgh, was unveiled on February 24, 1928, and the back carries a line adapted from Robert Browning: "I hold that a man should strive to the utmost for his life's set prize."65 Next to him lie the ashes of Frank Wild, his closest friend and second-in-command, buried on November 27, 2011.86 Many visitors raise a toast to "The Boss" at the graveside, a custom the museum calls a popular part of cruise ship visits, with a member of the expedition team leading it.926
The other graves tell the island's story: early sealers buried before the station opened, nine men who died in a typhoid epidemic in the winter of 1912, and Felix Artuso, an Argentine submariner who died during the brief Argentine occupation in 1982.7 Groups are asked to keep to 100 people inside the cemetery and to shut the gate on the way out to keep wildlife out.7
Two more Shackleton links are close by. Shackleton's men from Quest raised a memorial cross on Hope Point, near King Edward Point; the cross there now is a replica, the original is in the museum, and a landing there needs the Government Officers' agreement.1 And Grytviken was the last port of call of his ship Endurance in 1914, before she sailed for the Weddell Sea; her wreck was found on March 5, 2022, 100 years to the day after his burial here.425
What is in the South Georgia Museum?
The museum covers discovery, sealing, whaling, Shackleton, surveying, social, maritime and military history and natural history, and admission is free.10 It fills the villa built in 1914 for the whaling station's manager.1011 Nigel Bonner set it up in 1991 as a whaling museum, and it welcomed its first tourist ship on January 23, 1992; it is run by the South Georgia Heritage Trust, a charity based in Dundee, Scotland, while the government owns the collections.131210
Next to the villa, the Carr Maritime Gallery, opened in 2009, holds a replica of the James Caird, the lifeboat Shackleton sailed to South Georgia, and a lifeboat from the whale catcher Southern Star.12 The museum is open only in the southern summer, from October to March, with over 12,000 visitors a season; its small team also opens the Main Store, a historic building, and leads tours of the whaling station.11 It closes in winter.11 The gift shop and post office are cashless and take most major credit and debit cards.1
What happened at the Grytviken whaling station?
Carl Anton Larsen chose the site in 1902 and opened South Georgia's first whaling station here in 1904; it was run by his Compañía Argentina de Pesca, then by Albion Star, and for its last two seasons by a Japanese company on a sub-lease, before closing in the 1960s.45 About 400 people lived and worked here each summer.5 What is believed to be the largest blue whale ever recorded, 111 feet (33.8 m) long, was landed at Grytviken in the station's early years.4
Across all of South Georgia's stations, 175,250 whales were processed between 1904 and 1966.16 Since November 2025, a memorial "key table" at Grytviken has shown that total as a chart of rivets, each standing for 50 whales, and the museum's whaling station tour now ends there.1716
After the station closed it fell into disrepair, and in 2001 airborne asbestos became a concern. A government project begun in 2003 removed the hazardous material and many of the prominent structures, which changed the look of the site but kept it open to visitors.4 It is the only former whaling station on the island you may enter; the stations at Husvik, Stromness, Leith and Prince Olav Harbour are prohibited areas.2
What are the rules for visiting Grytviken?
Grytviken is where the South Georgia government clears every ship, so the rules begin before you step ashore:
- Permit. Every visitor needs a government entry permit: £250 per person from July 1, 2026, then £275 from July 1, 2027. It must be paid at least 8 days before arrival or a £50 late fee applies, and operators may buy it for you.3 HX, for one, covers the permit in its fares.22
- First landing. Ships must make their first landing at Grytviken unless the government grants an exemption, which it considers only for IAATO members, and every ship must call at least once.2 Government Officers board in Cumberland Bay for customs and immigration checks and run a biosecurity audit just before the Grytviken landing.2
- The film. Everyone going ashore must first watch the government's visitor film, narrated by Sir David Attenborough.219
- Numbers. Ships with up to 850 passengers may land, one ship at a time and at most two a day. The church, the museum and the cemetery each take 100 people at once.1
- Where you can go. You may enter the church, post office and museum and visit the cemetery; the Main Store is open with an expedition team member. Every other building is off limits, and you may not climb on structures or board the beached ships.1214
- On the ground. Do not sit or put bags down at Grytviken, which spreads non-native plants; keep out of the marked bittercress area southeast of the cemetery; take nothing, not even whalebone; and keep away from the oil tanks in high winds, when they can move.1 Recreational drones are banned.2
- Seals. Fur seals can be extremely aggressive from November to January.2
There are limited toilets at the museum and none at King Edward Point.1 For the island's other landing rules, see our South Georgia guide and Antarctica visitor rules.
How do you get to Grytviken, and what does it cost?
By ship only: South Georgia has no visitor accommodation, and most people come on a cruise ship; ships make about 120 visits a year, carrying around 15,000 passengers, and the government's 2024-25 visitor report puts Grytviken first among the island's landing sites.1914 Because every ship must call at Grytviken, any South Georgia voyage gets you here; most also visit the Falkland Islands and the Antarctic Peninsula. The cheapest 2026-27 voyages we found that name Grytviken in their itineraries, per person with two or more sharing, read in October 2026:
| Voyage | Route and length | Lowest fare |
|---|---|---|
| Oceanwide Expeditions, Atlantic Odyssey, Plancius | Ushuaia to St Helena, 24 days, April 4, 2027; no Antarctic landings | $9,450 for a berth in a shared quadruple; no flights2021 |
| HX, South Georgia and Falklands, Fram | Punta Arenas to Montevideo, 18 days, March 12, 2027; no Antarctica | $10,731 (was $15,732) with anniversary discounts, the extra part for bookings by November 9, 2026; includes a Santiago hotel night, the flight to Punta Arenas and the permit2227 |
| Oceanwide, Falklands, South Georgia and Antarctic Peninsula, Plancius | Ushuaia round trip, 19 days, November 23, 2026 | $12,575 for one male berth in a shared triple; other cabins waitlisted2321 |
Because every South Georgia ship calls here, any South Georgia voyage will do; the voyage list on this page shows the ones we track whose itineraries name Grytviken. To weigh the extra week South Georgia adds to an Antarctic trip, see our Antarctica trip cost guide and is South Georgia worth it.
Does anyone live at Grytviken?
A handful of people: a museum team of five lives at Grytviken in summer, and the British Antarctic Survey's King Edward Point station across the cove lists up to 44 staff in summer and 12 in winter.518 The station is owned by the government and run by BAS; its scientists study the fisheries for toothfish, icefish and krill, and it supports the Government Officers who regulate fishing and tourism.18 Check with the Government Officer before walking over to King Edward Point, a working station, and do not go into its buildings unless a resident invites you.1
When is the best time to visit Grytviken?
Ships call from late September to early April, and the museum is staffed from October to March.142011 In 2024-25 the first expedition ship arrived on September 30 and the last on March 28; in 2027, Oceanwide's Atlantic Odyssey, which leaves Ushuaia on April 4, plans its South Georgia days, Grytviken included, for days 5 to 7.142021 November is the museum's busiest month (23 ships brought 3,416 passengers in four weeks in November 2025) and the month fur seal pups arrive; the museum's daily count on the track to King Edward Point peaked at 358 pups in a single day in 2024.17 Adult fur seals can be extremely aggressive from November to January, so give them room.2
Expect cool weather in any month. Using British Antarctic Survey records for 2001 to 2025, we calculated average monthly temperatures at Grytviken of 40°F (4.5°C) in November, 43°F (6.1°C) in January and 44°F (6.5°C) in February.24 For conditions across the region, see Antarctica weather by month.
