Is South Georgia worth it on an Antarctica cruise?
The extra days and dollars South Georgia adds to an Antarctica cruise, compared ship by ship from published fares, with the wildlife it adds and who should skip it.
The short answer
Yes, if wildlife is your priority and you can spare 5 to 10 more days: South Georgia has about 450,000 king penguin pairs and 95% of the world's breeding Antarctic fur seals. On the same ship and cabin, adding it, usually with the Falklands, cost $7,100 to $14,000 more per person on most lines we compared, about $900 to $1,500 per extra day, usually without more days in Antarctica.
Facts checked October 15, 2026 against 44 sources.
South Georgia is worth adding to an Antarctica cruise if wildlife is the reason you are going and you can spare 5 to 10 more days and roughly $900 to $1,500 per person for each of them. The island holds about 450,000 breeding pairs of king penguins and, by the government's 2023 figure, some 4 million Antarctic fur seals, 95% of the world's breeding population.1 That seal figure now looks high: in 2026 the IUCN listed the species as Endangered, counting 944,000 mature fur seals worldwide in 2025, though it counts only mature animals.43 On the same ship and cabin, the South Georgia version of a trip, usually with the Falkland Islands too, cost $2,600 to $14,000 more than the version that visits only the Antarctic Peninsula in the twelve pairs we compared from eleven lines, and it rarely adds more than a day in Antarctica.23916 Skip it if your budget, your leave or your stomach for sea days is tight.
All fares below are per person, two sharing unless noted, as listed on the operators' own pages and read October 14 and 15, 2026. The per-day figures and differences are our arithmetic.
How much more does South Georgia cost?
On most lines, $7,100 to $14,000 per person, or about $900 to $1,500 for each extra day.41416 The fairest test is the same ship and the same cabin type, so each row pairs a line's classic Peninsula trip with its South Georgia voyage, which also calls at the Falklands on every line here except Silversea. Lines whose South Georgia trips we could not match like for like are left out.

Read the rows with their fine print. Silversea's pair mixes fare types: the Peninsula fare is a Last-Minute fare on January 8, 2027, while the South Georgia fare is an All-Inclusive Plus fare on November 9, 2026, cut from $19,650 by an offer that expires November 2, 2026; both were non-refundable when read.23 G Adventures' fares are 20% and 30% off respectively in a sale that ends October 31, 2026; at the regular fares of $10,699 and $27,399 the gap is $16,700.78 Viking's two fares are both in its Fall Sale, which also ends October 31.1516 Aurora's are after offers of up to 10% and 15% under its Stop Saying Someday offer, for bookings made and deposited by December 22, 2026.5644 Quark's are brochure fares, before the 10% and 15% promo codes its page shows.14 Swan Hellenic's Peninsula fare is tagged Last Minute, and its Oceanview cabins there were price on request, so its pair uses balcony staterooms.1920 Lindblad's two category 1 cabins were sold out when read, and Oceanwide had one South Georgia twin porthole cabin left.104 Several pairs also compare different months, which moves fares on its own: see Antarctica trip cost for how much.
Two patterns stand out. On the upscale lines (Seabourn, Lindblad, Aurora, Silversea), each extra day costs less than a day of the Peninsula trip. On the value lines (G Adventures, Polar Latitudes) it is the reverse: an extra day costs more than a Peninsula day, about $1,450 against $950 on Ocean Albatros.13 Viking is the outlier, at more than twice its Peninsula rate per extra day, because a $14,000 gap is spread over only six extra days.1516
How many days does South Georgia add, and do you lose time in Antarctica?
It adds 5 to 10 days, and on most voyages you get the same or fewer days in Antarctica, not more. The extra time goes to the islands and to the open sea between them.
| Line | Peninsula trip: days in Antarctica | South Georgia trip: Falklands, South Georgia, Antarctica | Change in Antarctic days |
|---|---|---|---|
| Seabourn, Seabourn Venture | 11 days: 517 | 21 days: 3, 3, 618 | +1 |
| Swan Hellenic, SH Minerva | 10 days: 419 | 19 days: 2, 4, 520 | +1 |
| Quark, Ocean Explorer | 11 days: 421 | 20 days: 2, 4, 422 | 0 |
| Aurora | 11 days: 45 | 21 days: 2, 3, 46 | 0 |
| Polar Latitudes, Ocean Albatros | 12 days: 523 | 20 days: 2, 4, 424 | -1 |
| Viking, Viking Octantis | 13 days: 725 | 19 days: 2, 3, 526 | -2 |
The sea time grows too. Quark's Peninsula trip spends 4 days at sea on the Drake Passage; its South Georgia trip spends 7 days at sea, between Ushuaia and the Falklands, on to South Georgia, across the Scotia Sea to the Peninsula and back over the Drake.2122 Polar Latitudes' pair goes from 4 sea days to 7 in the same way.2324 If sea days are the part you dread, read Drake Passage seasickness before you book.
One voyage shows how far the trade-off can go. Oceanwide's 19-day Falklands, South Georgia and Antarctica trip on Hondius in January 2027 plans only 2 days on the Peninsula, plus an afternoon and the South Orkney Islands, and its twin porthole costs $21,450 per person, though that was sold out when read and the cheapest open cabin was a Junior Suite at $22,000 per person (was $27,500).27 Check the day-by-day plan, not the trip name. Our guide to how many days you need in Antarctica lists the Antarctic days on more voyages.
What wildlife does South Georgia have that the Peninsula does not?
King penguins above all, plus far denser seal beaches. The British Antarctic Survey notes that king penguins breed only on warmer subantarctic islands, so a Peninsula-only trip does not visit their colonies, while emperor and Adélie penguins are the two that make the Antarctic continent their true home.28 The South Georgia government's counts for the island:
| Animal | On South Georgia |
|---|---|
| King penguin | About 450,000 breeding pairs; largest colonies at St Andrews Bay and Salisbury Plain1 |
| Macaroni penguin | More than 1 million pairs, the island's most abundant penguin1 |
| Gentoo penguin | About 105,000 pairs1 |
| Chinstrap penguin | A few tens of thousands, only at Cooper Bay and Annenkov Island1 |
| Antarctic fur seal | About 4 million, 95% of the world's breeding population, by the government's 2023 figure; the IUCN counted 944,000 mature fur seals worldwide in 2025 and lists the species as Endangered143 |
| Southern elephant seal | About 400,000, around half the world's population1 |
| Wandering albatross | 1,278 pairs in a 2014-15 survey, the third-largest breeding population1 |
| Humpback whale | About 20,000 feed in South Georgia's waters each season29 |
Because a king penguin's breeding cycle takes 14 months from courtship to a fledged chick, they are on the island all year.1 What the island lacks is the Peninsula's big chinstrap and Adélie colonies and its sea ice: the BAS puts the chinstrap's population at more than four million pairs, concentrated on the Antarctic Peninsula.28 Since the South Georgia trips in our tables all include the Peninsula too, you add these animals rather than swap them.
There is also history. Every ship must call at Grytviken, the old whaling station where Ernest Shackleton is buried, for customs and biosecurity checks; after it, the most-landed sites in 2024-25 were St Andrews Bay with 80 landings, Fortuna Bay with 58, Gold Harbour with 48 and Salisbury Plain with 42.2030 Most of these trips also stop in the Falklands, often at Stanley; Quark notes that the islands are home to Magellanic, gentoo and southern rockhopper penguins.22 More is on our Falkland Islands page.
Is South Georgia less crowded than Antarctica?
Yes, by about five to one. In 2024-25, 15,853 passengers visited South Georgia, 15,816 of them on 40 expedition cruise ships that made 110 visits, and 83.6% of the visits were by ships with fewer than 200 passengers.30 In the same season IAATO counted 80,455 passengers landing in Antarctica, and 85,195 in 2025-26.31
Three practical points. Visitors need a South Georgia government permit, which costs £250 per person from July 1, 2026, £275 from July 1, 2027 and £300 from July 1, 2028.32 Several lines include it: Oceanwide, HX and Silversea say so on the voyages we read.27333 Bird flu also affects landings. In 2024-25, the second season that highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) affected the island, expedition leaders aborted 19 landings because they could not keep a safe distance from animals that might be infected.30 And the island has no airport, no search and rescue service and only very limited medical facilities, so ships must be self-sufficient.29
Worked example: what does South Georgia cost a couple?
Take Seabourn Venture, which sails both trips with the same Veranda Suite and the same inclusions: a hotel night in Buenos Aires and charter flights to and from Ushuaia.91718
| The Great White Continent, December 8, 2026 | Ultimate Antarctica, Falklands and South Georgia, March 2, 2027 | |
|---|---|---|
| Length | 11 days17 | 21 days18 |
| Days in Antarctica | 5 | 6 |
| Days in South Georgia and the Falklands | 0 | 6 |
| Fare for two, our arithmetic | $34,5969 | $56,3969 |
For two people, the longer trip costs $21,800 more, about $2,180 a day for the extra 10 days, and buys 1 more day in Antarctica, 3 in South Georgia and 3 in the Falklands.91718 Booked by November 16, 2026, each fare also earns $500 of shipboard credit per suite.34 That is the price of the upgrade on a luxury line; on Oceanwide's Plancius in 2027-28 the same comparison for two people in a twin porthole is $26,000 against $40,200, or $14,200 more.4
Are there cheaper or shorter ways to see South Georgia?
Yes. These are the lowest fares we found for trips that include South Georgia:
- Cheapest with the Peninsula: a single berth (for a man) in a shared triple porthole on Oceanwide's Plancius, 19 days from November 23, 2026, at $12,575, with the South Georgia permit included; the $15,100 quad berths and every other cabin were waitlisted.440
- Shortest with the Peninsula: Silversea's 15-day Silver Cloud voyage from Puerto Williams, with 3 days at South Georgia, at $18,400 (Oceanview, after an offer ending November 2, 2026).3 For 2027-28, Hapag-Lloyd Cruises lists a 14-day South Georgia and Antarctic Peninsula trip on Hanseatic Inspiration from February 11, 2028, at US$17,526 in a balcony cabin (the cheaper cabins were sold out), with an early-booking discount that ends February 28, 2027.3539
- Fly one way: Antarctica21's 18-day air-cruise flies from Punta Arenas to King George Island on March 7, 2027, then sails north on Magellan Explorer via South Georgia to Ushuaia, from $17,995 in a porthole cabin, though only a $28,995 suite was open when read.3641
- South Georgia without Antarctica: HX's 18-day South Georgia and Falklands voyage on Fram, Punta Arenas to Montevideo, from $10,731 (was $15,732) on March 12, 2027, including a Santiago hotel night, the flight to Punta Arenas and the permit; its extra anniversary discount needs a booking by November 9, 2026.3742 Oceanwide's 24-day Atlantic Odyssey on Plancius sails from Ushuaia on April 4, 2027, via South Georgia and Tristan da Cunha to St Helena, from $9,450 for a shared quad berth, with no Peninsula landings.4
More options are coming. HX's 2028-29 season adds a new 19-day Antarctica and South Georgia voyage and starts its in-depth Falklands, South Georgia and Antarctica trip in Stanley, which HX says covers the three in a shorter time.38 The full list of lines and voyages is on our South Georgia page.
Who should add South Georgia, and who should skip it?
Add it if:
- Wildlife is the point of the trip, and king penguins and fur seal beaches are on your list.1
- You care about Shackleton and polar history: every ship calls at Grytviken, where he is buried.3020
- You have three weeks and can afford roughly $900 to $1,500 per person for each extra day; the median of our twelve pairs is about $1,310, between Swan Hellenic's $1,294 and Lindblad's $1,333.101920
Skip it if:
- Budget is the limit. The cheapest Peninsula-only fare we found is $7,050 for a shared quad berth on Plancius on March 26, 2027, against $12,575 for the cheapest South Georgia combination.4 See the cheapest way to Antarctica.
- You want the most time on the continent or a crossing of the Antarctic Circle; Viking's South Georgia trip, for example, gives 2 fewer Antarctic days than its Peninsula trip.2526
- Rough water or long stretches at sea worry you: the longer trips add about three sea days, and South Georgia itself has very limited medical facilities.2229
- You only have two weeks. Silversea's 15 days and Hapag-Lloyd's 14 are the shortest South Georgia trips we found.335
For most first-timers on a budget, a well-chosen Peninsula trip is the better buy; for wildlife travelers who can afford it, South Georgia is the part of the voyage that the Peninsula cannot replace.
