Le Boréal
Le Boréal, the first of Ponant's four sister ships, takes 200 guests to Antarctica on a Baltic ice class hull. Specs, the 2015 Falklands fire, cabins, 2026-27 fares and who it suits.
Is Le Boréal a good ship for Antarctica?
Yes, for the Antarctic Peninsula, the Falklands and South Georgia in summer. Le Boréal, Ponant's first sister ship, built in 2010, carries 200 guests in Antarctica, and nearly every cabin has a balcony. It is not an icebreaker: its 1C ice class is a Baltic rating. Cabins on sale start at $16,850 for 10 nights from Ushuaia on December 10, 2026, Buenos Aires flights included.
Facts checked October 15, 2026 against 31 sources.

Is Le Boréal a good ship for Antarctica?
Yes, for the trips Ponant uses it for: the Antarctic Peninsula in the southern summer, on its own or combined with the Falkland Islands and South Georgia. Le Boréal is where Ponant's small luxury expedition ships began: inaugurated in 2010, it was the first of the near-identical hulls Ponant now sells as four sister ships, with L'Austral, Le Soléal and Le Lyrial.12 In 2026-27 it is the only Ponant ship sailing from Buenos Aires to Ushuaia by way of the Falklands and South Georgia, and it has nine Antarctic departures, from $16,850 per person for 10 nights in a window stateroom on December 10, 2026, read on October 15, 2026.4567 It is also the ship that caught fire off the Falklands in November 2015, when all 347 people on board got off unhurt.2
Like Le Commandant Charcot, it sails Antarctica with no more than 200 guests (up to 264 elsewhere), so everyone gets ashore in two groups at sites, such as Petermann Island, that allow 100 at a time.38 It carries 11 Zodiacs for them, against 16 on Le Commandant Charcot and 24 on Seabourn Venture.19
It has stabilizers with dynamic fins, which Ponant says compensate for pitch and roll and reduce seasickness symptoms, useful on the Drake Passage.10 Every Le Boréal Antarctic voyage crosses the Drake at least once, and Emblematic Antarctica crosses it both ways; there is no option to fly the Drake on this ship.511 Nor is it an icebreaker: Ponant sells the Weddell Sea on Le Commandant Charcot and the Ross Sea on Le Soléal.412
How big is Le Boréal, and how many passengers does it carry?
Le Boréal is 142 m (466 ft) long, with 132 staterooms and suites on six guest decks, 145 crew and room for up to 264 guests.1

Ponant's terms of sale cap L'Austral, Le Boréal and Le Soléal at 200 guests on "Expedition Cruise" programmes and 264 on others, and its Antarctica page repeats the 200 limit; the IAATO vessel directory lists the full 264.3413
What does Le Boréal's 1C ice class mean?
It is a Baltic ice class from the Finnish-Swedish Ice Class Rules, not one of the seven polar classes. Finland's transport agency, Traficom, says the rules aim to keep ships trading in the northern Baltic moving safely all year, and lists four classes that meet them: IA Super, IA, IB and IC.14 Ponant writes Le Boréal's class as 1C, the lowest of the four.114 By contrast, Le Commandant Charcot is Polar Class 2 and Seabourn Venture Polar Class 6; the Charcot page sets out the polar scale.19 Ponant schedules Le Boréal in Antarctica only between November and March, on the Peninsula and the subantarctic islands.6
What happened in the Le Boréal fire in 2015?
On the night of November 17 to 18, 2015, a fire in the generator room left Le Boréal without power off the Falkland Islands, and the master evacuated almost everyone by lifeboat and helicopter.2 BEAmer, the French marine accident investigation office, published its report in 2016.
The ship was on a Great Austral Loop from Ushuaia, with 347 people on board, 194 of them passengers. It had left the Grave Cove anchorage in the Falklands at 7:15 pm, bound for South Georgia, into a 40 to 45 knot northwesterly wind and a rough to very rough sea.2
Around 0:10 am, an engineer officer changing a clogged fuel filter cartridge loosened the cover of a filter still under pressure. Fuel sprayed toward a turbocharger and caught fire, and the water-mist system could not stop it spreading along bunched electrical cables to the upper engine decks. All four generators stopped, and the ship drifted toward the coast on its backup generator.2
| Time, local | What happened |
|---|---|
| 0:16 am, Nov 18 | Fire alarms in the generator compartment2 |
| 0:18 to 0:19 am | Fire code announced, blackout, backup generator starts2 |
| 0:24 to 0:25 am | Mayday sent; muster point moved from the theater to the observation lounge on deck 62 |
| 4:23 am | Anchor down in 40 m of water2 |
| 4:30 am | Fire out, ship listing 14 degrees to port; the master orders the evacuation and stays aboard with 10 crew2 |
| 4:35 am | A Royal Air Force helicopter winches 28 people off the pool deck2 |
| 5:00 to 5:15 am | Two lifeboats launched with 191 passengers and 67 crew, plus two life rafts with 25 crew each (our sums)2 |
| 7:05 am | The patrol ship HMS Clyde arrives; transfers fail in the heavy sea2 |
| 9:00 am | Sister ship L'Austral arrives; convoy to shelter in White Rock Bay2 |
| about noon | Lifeboat occupants move to L'Austral2 |
| 8:00 am, Nov 19 | L'Austral docks at Port Stanley2 |
Le Boréal was towed to Mare Harbour in the Falklands and later to Punta Arenas, Chile.2 It reached Genoa on a semi-submersible ship on February 18, 2016, for 12 weeks of repairs by Fincantieri, and Mer et Marine reported it was due back in service on May 24, 2016.15
BEAmer noted that Le Boréal's generator and propulsion rooms are not fully separate compartments, which the 2006 SOLAS "safe return to port" amendments call for but which did not apply to a ship of its construction date. Ponant banned lone night work on the fuel lines and said filters with a pressure warning device and a purge valve would be fitted during the repairs.2
Has Le Boréal been refitted?
We found no announced major refit since the 2016 repairs. Ponant puts each ship in dry dock every two years, between seasons and under Bureau Veritas supervision, for class surveys, safety and propulsion work, and routine renovation of public areas.16 Le Boréal's 2024 stop was scheduled at Brest from April 15 to 29, mainly to renovate its air conditioning and run it with a new digital control system; Ponant's fleet director called air conditioning the company's biggest energy saving after propulsion, at about 15% of energy use on average.16
The same 2024 interview said Le Boréal, Le Soléal and Le Lyrial would each get a new bulbous bow, designed to save fuel at lower speeds, in 2025 and 2026, after L'Austral. We found no confirmation that Le Boréal's has been fitted.16 Starlink was by then in service across the fleet, alongside Iridium Certus and V-SAT satellite links.16
What are the cabins like on Le Boréal?
Nearly every cabin has a private balcony. The exceptions are the cabins numbered 300 to 307 on deck 3: cabin 300 has a porthole, and 301 to 307 each have a large square window.10 They make up the cheapest category, the window or porthole stateroom, which is larger inside than a balcony stateroom and sleeps three.117 Fares for the December 10, 2026 Emblematic Antarctica departure, per person with two sharing, read on October 15, 2026:
| Category | Size | Guests | Balcony | From, per person | Status |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Window or porthole stateroom | 226 sq ft (21 m²) | 3 | none | $16,8505 | 1 left |
| Lower deck balcony stateroom | 193 sq ft (18 m²) | 2 | 43 sq ft (4 m²) | $17,9305 | 2 left |
| Upper decks balcony stateroom | 193 sq ft (18 m²) | 2 | 43 sq ft (4 m²) | $18,6905 | 1 left |
| Deluxe Suite | 290 sq ft (27 m²) | 2 | 53 sq ft (5 m²) | $27,1205 | sold out |
| Prestige Suite | 398 sq ft (37 m²) | 4 | 86 sq ft (8 m²) | $28,1905 | sold out |
| Owner's Suite | 484 sq ft (45 m²) | 2 | 96 sq ft (9 m²) | $40,6205 | 1 left |
On this sailing a balcony costs $1,080 more per person than the window stateroom, and the cheapest suite costs $10,270 more (our arithmetic).5 Every suite on deck 6 comes with butler service.11 Three staterooms, numbers 307, 407 and 509, are designed for guests in wheelchairs.103 Whether that $1,080 is money well spent is the subject of our balcony guide.
What is included on Le Boréal, and what costs extra?
The fare covers full board, an open bar with Charles Heidsieck or Abelé 1757 champagne on the sister ships, 24-hour room service, Wi-Fi, port charges, and one activity a day led by naturalist guides, such as a Zodiac outing or a hike.105 You get a water-resistant parka, and adults can rent rubber boots on board.5
The main extras:
- Sea kayaking is extra: €350 per person buys a single outing of 1.5 hours in a two-seat kayak, with places for 20 kayakers per voyage, aged 18, or 16 with a parent, who pass a fitness check.5 Our guide to kayaking and camping in Antarctica compares the options.
- The polar plunge has no listed charge; it needs the same paper EKG and doctor's check as on Le Commandant Charcot, and children under 15 cannot take part.5
- Tips are at your discretion; Ponant says the average is €10 to €12 per guest per day.10
- Medical care: consultations and treatment by the ship's doctor are charged.10
What the fare adds on land depends on the route:

Where does Le Boréal sail in 2026-27 and 2027?
Le Boréal spends November 2026 to March 2027 in Antarctica, April to October 2027 in the Mediterranean and the Atlantic, and returns to Ushuaia in November 2027. It has no Arctic voyage in 2027.6
Its 2026-27 Antarctic departures, per person with two sharing, read on October 15, 2026. "Cheapest on sale" is the lowest category not marked "Sold out":

| The Great Austral Loop | Ushuaia to Buenos Aires via South Georgia and the Falklands | Mar 4, 2027 | 18 | $22,720, window19 |
The long loops are the better value per night. Emblematic Antarctica on December 10 works out at about $1,685 a night, the February 15 loop at about $1,575, and the two one-way loops at about $1,279 (November 12) and $1,262 (March 4) (our arithmetic).5111819 Every window stateroom on the Emblematic departures after December 10 is sold out.2122237 Fares include the PONANT Bonus, a discount of up to 30% that shrinks as a cruise fills and has no printed end date, so prices rise as departures sell.24
The round trip from Ushuaia starts in the Falklands at Grave Cove, with one of the area's largest gentoo penguin colonies, and New Island, with rockhopper penguins and black-browed albatrosses. Then come South Georgia, where Ponant points to more than 300,000 king penguins at Salisbury Plain, the Peninsula and the Drake.11 The March 4 voyage runs the other way and ends in Buenos Aires after Stanley, Saunders Island, Grave Cove and Steeple Jason Island.19 Our guide to whether South Georgia is worth it helps decide between a loop and a 10-night trip.
After its 2027 European season, the ship crosses from Las Palmas to Ushuaia between October 23 and November 13, 2027.6 Its first 2027-28 Emblematic Antarctica voyage, on November 28, 2027, already had its window and lower deck balcony staterooms sold out; the cheapest on sale was an upper deck balcony at $18,120 after a 15% PONANT Bonus.25 Our guide to Antarctica cruises in 2027 covers the wider market.
Le Boréal returns to the Arctic in summer 2028, with Iceland, Greenland and 19 nights in the Northwest Passage from Nuuk on August 26, 2028, advertised from $27,190 (a headline fare we did not check).6 For the Arctic in 2027, see Le Commandant Charcot or our Arctic cruises guide.
How does Le Boréal compare with its sister ships and Le Commandant Charcot?
The four sister ships share a 142 m hull, the 1C ice class and 11 Zodiacs, so choosing between them comes down to route and date.1
| Ship | Max guests | Staterooms | Ice class | 2026-27 Antarctic voyages |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Le Boréal | 264 | 132 | 1C | Buenos Aires to Ushuaia, Emblematic Antarctica, the Ushuaia round trip loop, Ushuaia to Buenos Aires16 |
| L'Austral | 264 | 132 | 1C | Emblematic Antarctica from Nov 18, 2026; Ushuaia to Buenos Aires on Feb 26, 202712627 |
| Le Lyrial | 244 | 122 | 1C | the Ushuaia round trip loop on Nov 17, 2026; Emblematic Antarctica; Ushuaia to Buenos Aires via Puerto Madryn on Mar 10, 2027128429 |
| Le Soléal | 264 | 132 | 1C | the Ross Sea from Dunedin, New Zealand, on Jan 25, 2027112 |
| Le Commandant Charcot | 245 | 123 | PC2 | none; its next Antarctic departure is in October 202714 |
Le Lyrial is the smallest of the four, at 122 staterooms.1 Choose Le Commandant Charcot only for the Weddell Sea or included kayaking: its cheapest Weddell Sea cabin on sale, for December 2027, cost nearly 1.5 times as much per night as Le Boréal's December 10 window stateroom (our arithmetic).305
The closest luxury rival on dates is Seabourn: Seabourn Venture's 11-day Great White Continent voyage from Buenos Aires on December 8, 2026 was priced from $17,298 per person in a Veranda Suite, taxes and fees included, with a Buenos Aires hotel and charter flights to Ushuaia.31 That is $632 less than Le Boréal's cheapest balcony two days later, on a PC6 ship that carries up to 264 guests (our arithmetic).59 Our guides to luxury Antarctica cruises and the best Antarctica cruise lines set the field side by side.
Who should book Le Boréal?
Book it for the Antarctic Peninsula with 200 guests, a balcony for about $1,080 more than a window cabin and flights from Buenos Aires in the fare, or for the Falklands and South Georgia with Ponant: it is the only Ponant ship on the Buenos Aires to Ushuaia loop and one of two on the round trip from Ushuaia.5428 Look elsewhere for deep ice or included kayaking, and do not count on a January window cabin: all are sold out. The 2015 fire is part of its record; the ship was repaired in 2016, and Ponant changed its night-work rules.152 We have not sailed on Le Boréal and do not quote passenger reviews.
Our verdict
A well-priced way to see the Antarctic Peninsula with Ponant, flights from Buenos Aires included, and the only Ponant ship on the Buenos Aires to Ushuaia loop through the Falklands and South Georgia. It is not an icebreaker, kayaking costs extra, and the cheapest cabins sell out first. It has no Arctic voyages until 2028.
Best for: First Antarctic Peninsula trips, Falklands and South Georgia loops from Ushuaia or Buenos Aires, couples who want a balcony and an open bar, travelers who want a 200-guest ship
