Nuuk
Nuuk, Greenland's capital: flights from Newark, Copenhagen and Reykjavík, things to do on the fjord, museum hours, costs, weather by month and the cruises that start here.
What is Nuuk, and how do you get there?
Nuuk is Greenland's capital, a town of 20,298 people on the southwest coast. Since November 2024 its 7,200 ft (2,200 m) runway has taken jets: United flew nonstop from Newark twice a week from June 7 to September 23, 2026, Icelandair reaches it from Reykjavík in 2 hours 20 minutes, and Air Greenland flies from Copenhagen in about 4 hours 30 minutes.
Facts checked October 15, 2026 against 32 sources.

Nuuk is the capital of Greenland and its biggest town, home to 20,298 people on January 1, 2026, on the southwest coast at 64°N where the Nuuk Fjord meets the sea.12 It is also the easiest place in Greenland to reach from North America: a 7,200 ft (2,200 m) runway has taken jets since November 28, 2024, and United flew here nonstop from Newark in the summers of 2025 and 2026.34 The Danish-Norwegian missionary Hans Egede founded the town as a colony in 1728; its colonial name, Godthaab, meant "Good Hope," and Nuuk means "point" of a peninsula in Greenlandic.5
How do you get to Nuuk from the US?
Fly nonstop from Newark in summer, or connect through Reykjavík or Copenhagen the rest of the year. United's Newark to Nuuk flight ran twice a week from June 7 to September 23 in 2026, leaving Newark on Tuesdays and Saturdays and Nuuk on Wednesdays and Sundays, on a Boeing 737 MAX 8 with 16 premium economy and 150 economy seats.4 Greenland Airports' announcement covers the 2026 season, the route's second; it had carried over 6,200 passengers in 2025.4 The sources we read give no dates for 2027, so check United before you plan around it.

By sea, the Sarfaq Ittuk passenger ferry makes a weekly round trip along the west coast between South Greenland and Disko Bay, calling at Nuuk.5 Our getting to Greenland guide compares every route.
What changed when Nuuk's new runway opened?
Nuuk became Greenland's main air hub. Air Greenland's Airbus A330neo Tuukkaq was the first large aircraft to use the full 7,200 ft (2,200 m) runway on November 28, 2024, and Nuuk replaced Kangerlussuaq as the place where passengers change planes for the rest of the country.3 Direct jet flights between Nuuk and Copenhagen began, and Air Greenland's average ticket on that route is around DKK 4,000, about $631 at Visit Greenland's rate of DKK 634.28 per $100 on April 16, 2026.89
Two fares make Nuuk a stopover. A Fly 'n sleep ticket from Copenhagen to 10 other towns, including Ilulissat and Sisimiut, includes a night's stop in Nuuk from DKK 3,795 ($598), hotel not included; and Visit Greenland describes morning flights from Nuuk to towns such as Paamiut, Maniitsoq, Sisimiut, Ilulissat and Kulusuk that return in the afternoon.89 Hotel capacity is set to grow: the municipality and the tourism industry aim to add 50% more hotel rooms, about 500 beds, by the end of 2030.8
The airport has a lounge, a café, an ATM, Wi-Fi and self-service check-in. Bus route 3 runs to town daily, with the last bus leaving the airport at 17:11, and two taxi firms serve it.10
What is Nuuk famous for?
Its setting and its culture. Mountains frame every view, the Nuuk Fjord, which Visit Greenland calls one of the world's largest fjord systems, starts a couple of minutes' walk from the center, and the town holds Greenland's main museums.5
- The Colonial Harbour. Historic buildings, a waterfront boardwalk and Hans Egede's house, the oldest house in Greenland.5
- Greenland National Museum and Archives. Its Thule culture exhibition includes an 11-meter (36 ft) umiaq from the 1470s, found in Peary Land in 1949, and a section on the Qilakitsoq mummies.11 It opens 10:00 to 17:00 daily from April 15 to September 15 and 12:00 to 16:00 in winter; adults pay DKK 100 ($16) and students and children enter free.129
- Art and architecture. The Nuuk Art Walk leads to 19 artworks with audio podcasts and includes a stop at the Nuuk Art Museum; Katuaq Cultural Centre, shaped after the northern lights, has a café, a cinema and concerts.5
- Sermitsiaq. The town's landmark peak stands on its own island and is not easy to reach from town, but helicopter flights land near its summit.5
- Everyday Nuuk. Malik, the swimming hall, has two hot tubs; the Kittat Economusée shows the national costume being sewn by hand.5
What are the best things to do in Nuuk?
Get onto the fjord and up the mountains. Boat tours run all year because the fjord does not freeze, from a few hours among the islands to full days to the Icefjord at the head of the fjord system.5 Prices below are the add-ons Air Greenland's tour partner sells with its Nuuk package, per person.
| Activity | Price | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Boat trip to the abandoned settlement of Qornoq | DKK 1,449 ($228)13 | One of many fjord trips to old and living settlements5 |
| Qooqqut Nuan: catch your own fish and have it cooked | DKK 1,649 ($260)13 | A restaurant on an old sheep station in the fjord; cod and redfish in summer5 |
| A night at Camp Kangiusaq with full board | DKK 4,595 ($724) extra13 | Hotel night and meals it replaces are deducted |
| Guided kayak tour | DKK 595 ($94)13 | |
| Stand-up paddleboard | DKK 495 ($78)13 | Lessons in the Colonial Harbour, or tours among icebergs5 |
| Guided city tour | DKK 349 ($55)13 | |
| Hike Quassussuaq (Lille Malene) | Free | All year, with snowshoes or skis in winter5 |
| Hike Ukkusissaq (Store Malene) | Free | A tough summer day hike with 360-degree views5 |
| Northern lights tour by car or boat | Not published | Best October to March, away from town lights5 |
Months follow Visit Greenland's advice: June to October for whale watching, boat tours, hiking and fishing, February to April for skiing and snowshoeing, and October to March for northern lights.5 Dollar amounts use the rate above.9 Fishing needs a license, and fly-fishing for Arctic char runs July to September.5 More ideas: things to do in Greenland.
Is Nuuk expensive?
Yes, though packages help. Visit Greenland puts prices about 10% above Scandinavia, with no VAT and tips already included.14 Air Greenland's 6-day Keflavík to Nuuk package, available year round (Wednesday to Sunday), costs DKK 5,895 ($929) per person sharing or DKK 7,250 ($1,143) alone, with the direct flight from Keflavík, 20 kg (44 lb) of checked baggage and 4 nights with breakfast at the Hotel Hans Egede Express.13159 Free things help too: the town's tap water is excellent, the boardwalk and hikes cost nothing, and the National Museum has free-admission Mondays several times a year.212
Do they speak English in Nuuk?
Many people do, but ask gently. Locals speak Greenlandic and Danish; AECO's Nuuk community guidelines say many understand English but some are shy to use it, so say hello and speak slowly.2 The same guidelines note that people use facial expressions and body language a lot and are not used to sarcasm.2
When is the best time to visit Nuuk?
June to October for boat trips, hiking and whales, February to April for skiing, and October to March for northern lights; Visit Greenland treats Nuuk as a year-round destination.5 July is the warmest month. DMI's 1991 to 2020 averages:
| Month | Mean temperature | Average daily high | Average daily low |
|---|---|---|---|
| January | 18°F (-7.7°C) | 22°F (-5.3°C) | 14°F (-9.8°C) |
| April | 26°F (-3.2°C) | 30°F (-1.0°C) | 22°F (-5.3°C) |
| July | 45°F (7.0°C) | 51°F (10.5°C) | 40°F (4.2°C) |
| October | 32°F (0.1°C) | 36°F (2.0°C) | 29°F (-1.6°C) |
The highest temperature recorded from 1991 to 2020 was 75°F (24.0°C).16 Fog is common in the fjord and can delay flights, September is the wettest month at 3.55 in (90.2 mm), and the harbor can freeze up to 12 in (30 cm) thick even though the fjord stays open.17 Nights are bright from June to August and the northern lights show from August to May.2 National Day on June 21 centers on the Colonial Harbour, with cannon fire, choirs and folk dancing.18
Cruise ships brought 44,156 passenger visits to Nuuk in 2025, the most in July (17,525).19

How do you get around Nuuk?
On foot in the compact center, and by bus or taxi beyond it. Nuup Bussii runs four lines, including route 3 to the airport, which is not timed to flights; pay with coins or a voucher card sold at Pisiffik and Brugseni kiosks.5 Pre-order a taxi if you need one at a set time, especially at peak hours.5 Where there is no sidewalk, walk on the left side of the road, and remember sidewalks double as bike lanes.2 The fjord is reached by boat or helicopter, and in summer you can hike all the way to Qooqqut and the settlement of Kapisillit.5
What should you know before you go?
Nuuk's community guidelines, published by AECO in the residents' own voice, ask visitors to:
- ask before photographing people, especially children;
- leave flowers unpicked and cairns untouched, since ancient cairns still guide hunters;
- watch the church flag: at half-mast, a funeral is under way;
- respect hunting traditions, such as flensing a seal for food;
- pick up a fishing certificate at the post office before casting a line;
- sail only with approved boat operators.2
