How to visit Greenland: flights from Copenhagen, Iceland and Newark, the new jet runways at Nuuk and Ilulissat, the best months, cruise or land trip, the regions, costs, safety and the rules.
How do you visit Greenland, and when should you go?
Greenland, the world's largest island, is reached by air from Copenhagen or Reykjavík, or nonstop from Newark to Nuuk on United, which flew June 7 to September 23 in 2026; jets have used Nuuk's 7,200 ft (2,200 m) runway since November 2024. July is the warmest month and most cruise ships visit mid-July to mid-August. The cheapest 2027 expedition cruise we found starts at $6,250 per person.

- Best months
- July to August
- Getting there
- Fly Air Greenland from Copenhagen to Nuuk (about 4 hours 30 minutes), Icelandair or Air Greenland from Keflavík (2 hours 20 minutes), or United nonstop from Newark to Nuuk, which ran June 7 to September 23 in 2026. Ilulissat gets direct Copenhagen flights from October 29, 2026. There are no ferries; otherwise arrive by cruise ship.
- Wildlife
- Whales in Disko Bay in summer, plus muskoxen, reindeer, Arctic foxes and Arctic hares on land. Polar bears are quite unlikely for most visitors; the best chance is on a cruise to East Greenland or around Qaanaaq.
- Landings
- US citizens need no visa, but Greenland is outside Schengen. The Northeast Greenland National Park needs a government permit applied for 12 weeks ahead, which cruise lines arrange. Ask before photographing people, never feed sled dogs and leave cultural remains alone.
Greenland is the world's largest island, about 1,750 miles (2,800 km) from north to south, and 56,740 people lived there on January 1, 2026.12 It is a self-governing part of the Kingdom of Denmark but sits outside the EU and the Schengen area, no roads link its towns, and you arrive by plane or by ship.49345 Three changes matter for travelers right now: jets have used the longer runway at Nuuk since November 28, 2024; United flew nonstop from Newark to Nuuk in the summers of 2025 and 2026; and Ilulissat opens its own international airport on October 29, 2026.678 This guide covers flights, seasons, cruises against land trips, regions, costs and rules; for the wider region, see the Arctic and Svalbard.
How do you get to Greenland?
Fly from Copenhagen, from Keflavík near Reykjavík, or in summer from Newark; there are no ferries from Iceland, Denmark or Canada, so the only other way in is aboard a cruise ship.5 Nuuk is now the hub for international and domestic flights, and Air Greenland connects from there to Kangerlussuaq, Ilulissat, Aasiaat, Sisimiut, Maniitsoq and Qaqortoq.65
| Route | Airline | Season | Frequency or flight time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Newark to Nuuk | United Airlines | June 7 to September 23 in 2026; our sources give no 2027 dates | Twice a week: out of Newark on Tuesdays and Saturdays, back from Nuuk on Wednesdays and Sundays7 |
| Copenhagen to Nuuk | Air Greenland | All year | About 4 hours 30 minutes, says Air Greenland; its 2027 timetable has early departures on Mondays and Fridays and late ones on Tuesdays and Thursdays, plus extra summer flights from late June to early September5352 |
| Keflavík to Nuuk | Icelandair and Air Greenland | All year | 2 hours 20 minutes, says Icelandair105 |
| Copenhagen to Ilulissat | Air Greenland | From October 29, 2026 | Mainly Wednesdays through the winter, then up to six a week from mid-June to early September 20271152 |
| Copenhagen to Kangerlussuaq | Air Greenland | February 10 to November 17 in 2026; June 16 to September 13 in 2027 | Twice a week in 2026; Tuesdays in 2027, plus Monday and Thursday charters552 |
| Keflavík to Ilulissat, Kulusuk and Qaqortoq | Icelandair; Air Greenland also flies to Ilulissat in season | Qaqortoq June to September 2026 | Kulusuk is about 2 hours from Iceland512 |
| Akureyri to Nerlerit Inaat (Constable Point) | Norlandair | All year | A few departures a week, the way in for Scoresby Sund5 |
Air Greenland discontinued its Billund route as of October 2026; in 2027 it flies from Aalborg in Denmark to Nuuk on Tuesdays and Thursdays from mid-June to early September, and resumes a weekly Sunday flight between Nuuk and Iqaluit in Canada in summer.5152 Our getting to Greenland guide goes route by route.
Can Americans fly directly to Greenland?
Yes, in summer. United flew nonstop between Newark and Nuuk twice a week in 2025 and 2026 and describes itself as the only carrier directly connecting the United States and Greenland.7 The 2026 season ran June 7 to September 23 on a Boeing 737 MAX 8 with 16 premium economy and 150 economy seats, and the route carried over 6,200 passengers in its first summer, 2025.7 The sources we read give no dates for 2027, so check United before you plan around it. Outside summer, Visit Greenland says the quickest way from the US is through Iceland.5
US citizens need no visa. A Schengen visa is not valid for Greenland, though, so anyone who needs a visa for Denmark must apply separately for Greenland.3 Some cruise fares include the flight: HX's 19-day Baffin Bay voyage on September 1, 2027 flies guests from New York to Nuuk and back, from $17,928 per person sharing after a discount for bookings made by November 9, 2026.13
Is it safe for Americans to travel to Greenland?
Yes, if you respect the weather and the distances. The U.S. State Department rates Greenland Level 2, "exercise increased caution," because of environmental hazards from extreme weather and limited emergency services; the advisory dates from October 29, 2024.4950 It warns that U.S. consular help in Greenland is extremely limited, that search and rescue outside towns can take several days to arrive, and that the person rescued is billed for it.4950 Its advice: buy comprehensive travel, medical and evacuation insurance, and travel with a professional guide or with an operator that belongs to AECO, the Arctic expedition cruise operators' association.49 US citizens can stay up to 90 days without a visa, with a passport valid at least 90 days beyond the date they leave.50
What changed with Greenland's new airports?
By the end of October 2026 Greenland will have three new airports and two international hubs. Nuuk's 7,200 ft (2,200 m) runway opened on November 28, 2024, when Air Greenland's Airbus A330neo Tuukkaq became the first large aircraft to land, and Nuuk took over from Kangerlussuaq as the place where passengers change planes.6 Qaqortoq Airport in South Greenland opened on April 16, 2026, and Ilulissat's airport opens on October 29, 2026 with Air Greenland's first direct flight from Copenhagen.12811
The result, says Visit Greenland, is that you can reach most parts of the country within 1.5 hours.9 Air Greenland's average Nuuk to Copenhagen ticket costs around DKK 4,000 (about $631 at Visit Greenland's April 2026 rate of DKK 634.28 per $100).914
What is the best month to visit Greenland?
July or August for most travelers: July is the warmest month in both Nuuk and Ilulissat, and most cruise ships visit between mid-July and mid-August.1516 Almost any inhabited place can be reached by sea from June to October, except the far north, where sea ice lingers.16 Each season suits different trips:
| Months | Good for | Mean temperatures |
|---|---|---|
| January to March | Dog sledding above the Arctic Circle and in East Greenland, ice fishing, Ilulissat's igloo lodge, northern lights | -13°F to 25°F (-25°C to -4°C) |
| April and May | Late northern lights at Kangerlussuaq, heliskiing near Maniitsoq and Ammassalik | 5°F to 43°F (-15°C to 6°C) |
| June to August | Midnight sun in the north, hiking, kayaking, whale watching, fishing and most cruises; National Day on June 21 | 37°F to 52°F (3°C to 11°C) |
| September and October | Hiking and berry picking with fewer mosquitoes, the first northern lights, the Polar Circle Marathon | 16°F to 43°F (-9°C to 6°C) |
| November and December | Dark skies, Christmas, alpine skiing from December | -4°F to 28°F (-20°C to -2°C) |
Temperature ranges and activities are Visit Greenland's.17 Its weather page adds that the warmest months average no more than 42°F (5.6°C), though the south and the inner fjords can top 68°F (20°C) in June to August, and the dry air makes it feel warmer.18 By DMI's 1991 to 2020 normals, July averages 45°F (7.0°C) in Nuuk and 47°F (8.3°C) in Ilulissat.15 See Greenland weather by month.
Should you take a cruise or travel by land in Greenland?
Take a cruise to see East Greenland, the National Park or several towns in one trip; travel by land to settle into one or two towns for less money.1619
| Expedition cruise | Land trip | |
|---|---|---|
| Where you go | Most expedition cruises head to East Greenland; many West Greenland cruises start at Kangerlussuaq and sail to Disko Bay16 | Towns with airports or ferry calls, such as Nuuk, Ilulissat, Kangerlussuaq, Sisimiut and Qaqortoq4 |
| Getting around | The ship, with small-boat landings | Air Greenland's 37-seat Dash 8-200 planes and helicopters, or the Sarfaq Ittuk ferry between Qaqortoq and Ilulissat from April to December4 |
| Length | 7 to 19 days on the 2027 voyages in our tables2013 | Air Greenland's tour partner sells 3-day and 6-day packages21 |
| Cheapest we found | $6,250 per person for a berth in a four-person cabin, 10 days from Akureyri, Iceland22 | DKK 5,450 (about $859) for 3 days in Ilulissat with flights from Nuuk and two hotel nights2314 |
| National Park | The operator handles the permit19 | Apply to the Government of Greenland at least 12 weeks ahead19 |
On land, the Arctic Circle Trail runs about 99 miles (160 km) between Kangerlussuaq and Sisimiut, and Kangerlussuaq is the one place where you can reach the Greenland Ice Sheet by road.5417 Bigger ships crossing the Atlantic usually call at Qaqortoq or Nanortalik, sometimes Nuuk, and try to sail Prince Christian Sound if icebergs do not block it.16 For ship types, read expedition cruises explained and small vs large expedition ships; for ideas ashore, things to do in Greenland.

What part of Greenland is best to visit?
That depends on what you came for: Ilulissat and Disko Bay for icebergs, Nuuk for a city base and fjord trips, South Greenland for green valleys and Norse ruins, and East Greenland for remote villages and the best odds of a polar bear.361737
| Region | Main towns (2026 population) | Known for | Way in |

How expensive is Greenland?
Expect prices roughly 10% above Scandinavia, with alcohol, tobacco and fresh fruit and vegetables dearest, but there is no VAT and tips are already included in prices.1 Greenland uses the Danish krone; the dollar figures below use Visit Greenland's rate of DKK 634.28 per $100 on April 16, 2026.14

Cards work in most places, ATMs exist in 15 towns, and Visit Greenland still advises carrying some Danish kroner.14
How many days do you need in Greenland?
Allow at least three days for one town and a week or more for two regions or a cruise. Air Greenland's tour partner sells a 3-day Ilulissat getaway and a 6-day Nuuk package, Visit Greenland recommends at least a couple of days in each destination you fly to, and the 2027 cruises above run 7 to 19 days.2340913 Weather can stretch a trip: fog in Nuuk sometimes delays flights, and some routes in the north need a night in Ilulissat, such as the weekly Tuesday flight to Qaanaaq.1843
Do people speak English in Greenland?
Many do, especially younger people, but the main languages are Greenlandic and Danish. Visit Greenland says Danish is the first foreign language taught in schools, many young people who studied abroad speak good English, and guided excursions usually run in several languages.1 In Nuuk, AECO's local guidelines note that many people understand English but some are shy to use it.44
What are the rules for visiting Greenland?
Carry a passport, get permits where needed and follow local guidelines:
- Entry. Greenland is outside the EU and Schengen, so a Schengen visa does not cover it; citizens of the US, Canada, the UK and Australia need no visa.3
- National Park. Entry needs a Government of Greenland permit applied for at least 12 weeks before departure; cruise passengers are covered by their operator. Hunting, fishing, removing objects and motor vehicles on land are banned.19
- Ilulissat Icefjord. Special rules apply to boats in the UNESCO site, and snowmobiles are not allowed near it.545
- People and dogs. Ask before photographing anyone, and if there is any hesitation, the answer is no. Sled dogs are working animals: never approach or feed them without the owner.46
- Cultural remains. They are protected by law, with a 330 ft (100 m) zone around them; leave stones, bones, antlers and driftwood where they lie.46
- Fishing. You need a fishing license; in Nuuk you collect the certificate at the post office.3844
- Tourism Act. The decision on proposed changes to Greenland's Tourism Act was put off to the autumn parliamentary session, and AECO says any changes are unlikely to take effect before the 2027 season.47
Will you see a polar bear in Greenland?
Probably not on a land trip. Visit Greenland calls meeting a polar bear "quite unlikely" because bears prefer the cold, deserted north and east; your best chance is on a cruise to East Greenland or around Qaanaaq, and bears are extremely rare on the west coast between Upernavik and Paamiut.37 Whales are easier: Disko Bay is a feeding ground for migrating whales in summer, and bowhead whales sing there from January until they fall silent in May.4548 On land you may meet muskoxen, reindeer, Arctic foxes and Arctic hares.37 Read more on the polar bear, walrus and Arctic animals, or see polar bear tours.
