Polar bear tours: where is the best place to see polar bears?

Churchill, Svalbard, Greenland, Baffin Island and Kaktovik compared for polar bear tours: odds in the operators' words, seasons, 2027 cost per day, how close you get, and which Churchill trips still have space.

The short answer

Churchill, Manitoba, in October and November, by our reading: polar bears gather on the Hudson Bay coast waiting for the ice, and tundra vehicles drive out to them. 2027 trips from Winnipeg start at CAD 8,927 for five days. Svalbard, Greenland and Baffin Island cruises add a chance of bears to a longer voyage, and boat tours at Kaktovik, Alaska, have been halted since 2021.

Facts checked October 15, 2026 against 55 sources.

Where is the best place to see polar bears?

Churchill, Manitoba, in October and November, if seeing a bear is the reason for the trip. Bears gather there every fall and tours are sold to see them: the bears that summered on the Hudson Bay coast wait there for the bay to freeze, then return to the ice in late November or early December, and Natural Habitat Adventures says the highest concentration is in October and November.12 Ships to Svalbard, Greenland and Baffin Island put bears inside a longer Arctic voyage, with no promise of a sighting, and boat tours at Kaktovik, Alaska, have not run since 2021.34 The cost per day in this table is our arithmetic from each trip's published 2027 fare and length.

Our ranking: Churchill in the fall if a bear is the point, Churchill's walking lodges for a ground-level view, Svalbard for the cheapest voyage in this guide with a chance of bears, Baffin Island or Northeast Greenland if you want remote coast and accept bears as a possibility, and Kaktovik not until tours restart. That ranking is ours, reasoned from the sources in the table, not a published success rate. For the animal itself, see our polar bear page, and for every region, our Arctic page.

What are the best polar bear tours in Churchill, Canada?

There are three ways to do it, and very few companies run them. Manitoba capped the vehicles allowed to carry tourists across the coastal plain of the Churchill Wildlife Management Area at 18 in 1984, raised the cap to 20 in 2020 and cut it back to 18 in 2025; those 18 are operated by Frontiers North Adventures and Great White Bear Tours.28 Frontiers North holds 12 of the 18 permits.29

  • A hotel in town and days out by tundra vehicle. Frontiers North drives its own Tundra Buggies, with no more than 22 guests on package tours; Natural Habitat Adventures caps its classic trip at 16 and uses Polar Rovers.62
  • A lodge on the tundra. Frontiers North's Tundra Buggy Lodge sits at Polar Bear Point inside the wildlife management area, sleeps up to 40 in shared bunks, and lets guests spend full eight-hour days out with the bears; Natural Habitat runs its own 29-guest Tundra Lodge on a spit where the sea ice first forms.3031
  • A fly-in lodge on the coast, on foot. Churchill Wild flies guests to three lodges about 19, 37 and 155 miles (30, 60 and 250 km) from town, holds 16 guests at a time, and looks for bears on guided walks.832

A fourth company, Lazy Bear Expeditions, lost its two vehicle permits in 2025. Manitoba cited the decline of Western Hudson Bay bears and concern that bears get used to vehicles; Lazy Bear's owner calls the decision political, and the fight was still in court in September 2026.2833

From CAD 8,927 per person for five days from Winnipeg, the cheapest 2027 package still open on October 15, 2026, among the trips we checked. Prices are per person with two sharing, in each company's own currency.

Book early. Frontiers North says many trips sell out six to 12 months ahead, and nearly every Churchill Wild fall departure for 2027 was already sold out.5103637 Flights to Winnipeg are extra, and Churchill Wild also leaves out taxes and tips.78

What is the best month to see polar bears in Churchill?

Late October to mid-November, by our reading. The Town of Churchill says bears come ashore in mid-to-late July, that the risk of meeting one is highest in October and November, and that the bears leave for the ice in late November or early December.1 Natural Habitat says the highest concentration is in October and November and that many bears go once the bay freezes, historically in early December.2 Bears were already around town this fall: by October 11, 2026, Manitoba's Polar Bear Alert program had logged 184 occurrence reports and handled 11 bears.38

Two other seasons work if you plan around them:

  • July and August. Bears stay on the coast all summer, and some 3,000 beluga whales move into the Seal and Churchill rivers. Churchill Wild pairs bears and belugas from July to late August, and Natural Habitat's 7-day summer trip from $9,295 (plus $1,689 air) says guests may see mothers with cubs, which "remain in the area all summer long".839
  • February and March. Mothers and cubs leave their dens in Wapusk National Park for Hudson Bay, and every visit to the park needs a licensed operator.4041 Churchill Wild's 14-day Nanuk Emergence Quest looks for mothers leading cubs out of dens in the Kaskatamagan Wildlife Management Area, where temperatures can fall to minus 58°F (minus 50°C) with wind chill; all 2027 dates are sold out.42

Can you do a polar bear day tour from Winnipeg or in Churchill?

Yes, but the cheapest seats go first. Frontiers North's One Day Polar Bear Adventure checks in at about 6 AM in Winnipeg, spends about six hours on the tundra and lands back between 8 and 9 PM, for CAD 2,107.62; its only listed date is November 17, 2026.43

If you are already in Churchill, Frontiers North's autumn day tour costs CAD 657.14 for an adult, lasts about eight hours, and is non-refundable; most fall 2026 dates were sold out.445 It caps day tours at 36 guests on a 40-seat Tundra Buggy.29 Great White Bear Tours quotes $630 per person per day, tax included, without naming a currency or year, and is not selling individual day tours for October and November 2026.45 Churchill Wild does no day trips at all.8

Can you go to Churchill by train?

Yes. VIA Rail's train 693 leaves Winnipeg at 12:05 on Tuesdays and Sundays and reaches Churchill at 09:00 on the third day.46 Frontiers North's 7-night Classic by Train goes north by rail and flies back, at CAD 12,527, but every 2027 date was sold out.47 Churchill Wild suggests the train only for the trip home, because a late arrival cannot move its charter flights.8

Can you see polar bears in Svalbard?

Yes, but only as a chance on a wider trip, and not on a day tour. Visit Svalbard says there are no polar bear safaris in Svalbard, that about 300 bears live there year-round, and that whether you see one "simply cannot be predicted"; the longer you stay, the better your chances.3 Oceanwide says "you will have a good chance of seeing polar bears in Svalbard" but that "Sightings cannot be guaranteed", and that it focuses on the sea ice.12 You see bears from a ship or a Zodiac, usually at a distance: Norway's law keeps everyone at least about 1,000 ft (300 m) away, and 1,640 ft (500 m) from March 1 to June 30.13

The cheapest 2027 berths we found, per person, read on October 15, 2026:

Voyage, 2027DaysFareBasis
Oceanwide, A Taste of North Spitsbergen, Ortelius, June 30 or July 56$3,250One berth in a shared four-berth cabin, one cabin left on each date; flights extra55
Oceanwide, North Spitsbergen Explorer, Hondius, June 18$4,800One berth in a shared four-berth cabin14
G Adventures, Realm of the Polar Bear, from Longyearbyen, June 178$5,799Lower-deck triple, 2 berths left; flights from Oslo extra15
Oceanwide, Around Spitsbergen, Hondius, June 2910$6,250One berth in a shared four-berth cabin11

G Adventures' October Expedition Sale, which runs to October 31, 2026, cuts its June 17 window twin from $7,699 to $6,159.20; its cheapest triple is not discounted.15

Which month? Visit Svalbard says the best time cannot be predicted.3 Later summer is when ships usually get all the way around Spitsbergen: going by its voyages from 1992 to 2019, Oceanwide puts the chance of a full circumnavigation at about 30% in the first half of July, 70% in the second half, 90% in the first half of August and 95% in the second half.11 The June 29 voyage above sails mostly in the first half of July, when those odds are lowest. Our pick, as on our Svalbard and polar bear pages, is a circumnavigation of 11 days or more in July or August; the Svalbard cruises guide compares the routes.

Can you see polar bears in Greenland?

Possibly, but Visit Greenland calls meeting one "quite unlikely" for a traveler. It says bears are most frequently found in North and Northeast Greenland and that the best chance is by cruise ship to East Greenland or around Qaanaaq.16 Greenland's polar bear act of March 6, 2023 forbids luring, pursuing or seeking out bears, and AECO tells anyone who spots one to retreat immediately.17

Oceanwide's Northeast Greenland Extreme on Ortelius sails September 6 to 19, 2027, from Akureyri, Iceland, to Longyearbyen, aiming for the Northeast Water polynya, "a water rich with seals, whales, polar bears, and seabirds"; a berth in a shared quad costs $8,300.18 Ponant's 17-day crossing from Svalbard to Greenland on Le Commandant Charcot, June 24 to July 10, 2027, starts at $40,260 per person in a lower-deck balcony stateroom with two sharing, including a flight from Paris to Longyearbyen and a 15% PONANT Bonus for which the page shows no end date; Ponant offers "opportunities to glimpse or observe polar bears".19 More routes are in our Greenland cruises guide.

Can you see polar bears in the Canadian High Arctic?

Yes, as a possibility on a long voyage around Baffin Island, but no operator we checked gives odds. These ships sail in August and September, and bears are one of several animals on each operator's list:

Voyage, 2027DaysFare fromWhat the operator says about bears
Lindblad, Fabled Lands of the North: Greenland to Newfoundland, National Geographic Explorer, August 15, Nuuk to St. John's17$14,750, no flights2248Baffin Island's fjords are "home to whales, polar bears and rich Inuit history"48
Lindblad, Baffin Island: Exploring Canada's Wild Arctic Frontier, National Geographic Resolution, August 19 or 29, round trip from Reykjavík13$15,650, no flights; the $14,900 cabins were sold out on both dates2220"Search for the region's iconic wildlife, from polar bears and whales to walruses"20
HX, Circumnavigating Baffin Bay, MS Roald Amundsen, September 119$17,928, down from $21,576, with flights from New York to Nuuk21"elusive polar bears", and "perhaps even polar bears" in northwest Greenland21

HX's lower fare comes from its 130th anniversary offers, and the extra 5% off cabins in them applies only to bookings made from September 1 to November 9, 2026.49 Lindblad's fares are per person, two sharing, in the cheapest category with space on October 15, 2026.22

You can also reach Churchill by sea in summer. Atlas Ocean Voyages sails from Nuuk to Churchill on July 30, 2027, from $19,399 for 16 nights, and back from Churchill to Nuuk on August 15, from $17,799 for 14 nights, per guest in its smallest suite, with charter flights from Toronto; its description invites you "to spot seabirds, walrus, and polar bears" in Canada.5051 Those calls come in summer, not in the fall bear season.

Is Kaktovik closed to polar bear tours?

Yes, for boat tours. On October 15, 2026, the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge's home page said that "boat-based polar bear viewing on waters of Arctic Refuge around Kaktovik is currently unavailable."23 The federal government halted the boat tours in 2021, mostly over concerns about how tourists were affecting bear behavior and overrunning the town, and as of April 2026 Alaska Native leaders were talking with the US Fish and Wildlife Service about a restart, "perhaps as early as 2027".4 Land-based tours continued after the halt, Alaska Public Media reported in March 2026.25 If you go, Alaska's wildlife agency notes that the village is reached by small commercial or chartered planes, that weather delays are common, and that hotel rooms are very limited.24

The bears still come. Up to 80 come on land near the village in late summer and fall, and when the tours ran, most visitors came in September.2524 But no operator we checked was selling a tour for a named year: Akook Arctic Adventures lists its operating season as "To Be Determined", and Planet Earth Adventures' trips from Fairbanks say "call for availability".2627 Our Kaktovik page follows the restart talks.

Where else in the USA? Alaska is the only US state with polar bears.4 Farther west, Utqiagvik offers viewing, "though the chances of seeing a bear are not assured", and Alaska's wildlife agency suggests asking local hotels about guided tours.24

How close do you get to polar bears?

It depends on how you travel:

  • Tundra vehicles. Both Churchill fleets have an open rear deck with a metal floor; Natural Habitat says a bear may occasionally "wander up directly below" its Polar Rover.62
  • On foot. Churchill Wild's guides keep at least 330 ft (100 m) as a rule of thumb, carry bear spray, bangers and a shotgun, and its lead guides have at least 10 years with polar bears.9
  • Ships. AECO members never follow a swimming bear and back off to at least 660 ft (200 m) or the legal limit, whichever is greater.17
  • Alaska. Disturbing a polar bear counts as "take" under the Marine Mammal Protection Act.52

Are polar bear tours ethical?

They can be, and the rules are tightening where bears are in decline. The Western Hudson Bay population around Churchill was estimated at 618 bears in 2021, and the Polar Bear Specialist Group judges it very likely to have decreased.53 That decline is why Manitoba said it would hold the tundra fleet to 18 vehicles, along with "concerns about the potential habituation of polar bears to vehicles".28 At Kaktovik, during the boom the village bear patrol had to kill three or four bears a year, against about one before.4

What to look for: small groups, operators who name their distance rules, and no feeding or drones. Churchill Wild bans drones near wildlife and never feeds animals.54

Which polar bear tour should you book?

  • First trip, bears as the point: a 5 or 6 day tundra vehicle trip from Winnipeg in late October or November.
  • Photographers who want the most hours with bears: a tundra lodge, either operator's.
  • A bear at eye level: Churchill Wild, if you can pay about twice the price and book a year or more ahead.
  • Bears plus whales and walruses: a Svalbard voyage in July or August, accepting that a bear is a bonus.
  • Remote coast, bears a possibility: Baffin Island or Northeast Greenland, for a much higher fare.
  • Americans who want to stay in the US: wait for news from Kaktovik before booking anything.

These picks are ours, drawn from the prices, seasons and rules above. We have not traveled with any of these companies.
