Is Le Commandant Charcot worth it?

Le Commandant Charcot is worth it if you want the routes it was built for: the Geographic North Pole, the deep Weddell Sea or the Ross Sea region. Ponant's Polar Class 2 icebreaker carries up to 245 guests, 200 in Antarctica, and includes kayaking. It has no 2026-27 Antarctic voyages; cabins on sale start at $29,600 for 12 Weddell Sea nights (December 2027) and $44,370 for the North Pole.

Facts checked October 14, 2026 against 31 sources.

Le Commandant Charcot is Ponant's icebreaking expedition ship. It was handed over in 2021 and built to Polar Class 2, the second-highest of the seven polar ice classes.12 It has 123 staterooms and suites, every one with a balcony or terrace, and carries up to 245 guests in the Arctic but no more than 200 on Antarctic voyages.3423 Ponant uses it for the Geographic North Pole, the deep Weddell Sea and a crossing from Ushuaia to Hobart by way of the Ross Sea region. It has no Antarctic voyages in 2026-27, and it is the most expensive way to sail with Ponant: when we checked on October 14, 2026, the cheapest cabins still on sale were $29,600 per person for 12 nights in the Weddell Sea in December 2027, and $44,370 for a 12-night North Pole round trip in August 2027.5629

What does Polar Class 2 mean, and what can the ship do with it?

Polar Class 2 (PC2) means the hull is built for year-round operation in moderate multi-year ice. That is the second step on the seven-class scale that Transport Canada publishes:2

Polar classIce the ship is built for
PC1Year-round operation in all polar waters2
PC2Year-round operation in moderate multi-year ice2
PC3Year-round operation in second-year ice, which may include multi-year ice2
PC4Year-round operation in thick first-year ice, which may include old ice2
PC5Year-round operation in medium first-year ice, which may include old ice2
PC6Summer and autumn operation in medium first-year ice, which may include old ice2
PC7Summer and autumn operation in thin first-year ice, which may include old ice2

Seabourn Venture, for comparison, is built to PC6.7 Ponant describes Le Commandant Charcot as "the only ship designed to venture into the heart of the most extreme ice" and uses the rating to sell routes, such as the deep Weddell Sea and the Geographic North Pole, that its other ships do not attempt.814 Its builder, VARD, listed the intended destinations at delivery: the Geographic North Pole, Northeast Greenland National Park, a circumnavigation of Svalbard, the Bellingshausen Sea, Charcot and Peter I islands, the Weddell Sea and the Larsen Ice Shelf.1

Being able to break ice does not mean it breaks everything. Ponant says the ship stays out of fast ice attached to the coast, which it describes as vital for wildlife and Inuit communities, and moors at its edge for landings when conditions allow. Much of its navigation follows channels already open in drifting pack ice, chosen with Ponant's own ice-routing software.4 A helicopter on board is used only for navigation and safety, mainly to scout routes through the ice.4

How big is Le Commandant Charcot?

Le Commandant Charcot is 150 m (492 ft) long and 28 m (92 ft) wide, with a gross tonnage of 31,757 and room for up to 245 guests and 215 crew.3 Ponant's and VARD's published specifications:

The number of guests on board depends on the hemisphere. In Antarctica, plan on no more than 200: Ponant's Antarctica page says ships going to the continent carry no more than 200 guests at a time, and the ship's own terms of sale set its passenger capacity at 200 in the Southern Hemisphere and 270 in the Northern.1023 IAATO, the Antarctic tour operators' association, files Ponant among operators of ships carrying fewer than 200 passengers.25 In the Arctic, expect up to 245, the maximum on Ponant's ship page.3 The 270 figure, which also appears in Ponant's general terms and the IAATO vessel directory, is higher than the ship page's maximum, and Ponant does not explain the difference.249 The ship-specific terms are undated and refer to 2022 departures, so ask Ponant to confirm the count for yours.23

Is Le Commandant Charcot comfortable in rough seas?

Ponant says it is particularly stable, and it gives three reasons: a 10 m (33 ft) draft, anti-roll stabilizers used in open water, and an icebreaking hull adapted to cruise-ship comfort standards. It calls the ship the first icebreaker with a reinforced hull and integrated stabilizers.4 We have not sailed on it and do not quote passenger reviews, so we cannot tell you how it rides compared with a conventional expedition hull. Its Antarctic round trips from Ushuaia cross the Drake Passage both ways.5 Our guide to whether to fly or sail the Drake Passage explains what that crossing involves.

What does LNG hybrid power mean on this ship?

Le Commandant Charcot is a hybrid electric ship that burns liquefied natural gas (LNG) and light fuel. VARD called it the first hybrid electric cruise icebreaker with LNG propulsion.14 Ponant says LNG reduces its CO2 emissions by 25%, nitrogen oxide emissions by 85% and fine particle emissions by 95%. It does not say what those cuts are measured against.4 VARD also notes that all waste is sorted and treated on board.1

Neither Ponant nor VARD says, on the pages we read, how much battery storage the hybrid system has or how long the ship can run on it. Treat the emission figures as Ponant's own claims, not as independently measured results.

How many guests go ashore at once?

In Antarctica, Le Commandant Charcot lands its guests in two groups at the busiest sites: those sites allow 100 visitors ashore at a time, and the ship carries no more than 200 guests there (our arithmetic).1123 The Antarctic Treaty guidelines for Petermann Island, a typical Peninsula site, set that limit of 100, with one guide for every 20 visitors. They also allow no more than two ships carrying over 200 passengers there each day, a restricted class the ship stays out of at 200 guests.11 On Arctic voyages, with up to 245 on board, the expedition follows the rules of AECO, the Arctic operators' association, instead.6 Le Commandant Charcot carries about 20 naturalist guides and experts, which Ponant says is double the team on its other expedition ships.4 Children must be at least 8 to sail on it, two years older than on Ponant's other expedition voyages, and must manage Zodiac landings on their own.4

What activities are included on Le Commandant Charcot?

Kayaking, hiking, snowshoeing, Zodiac outings and the polar plunge are all included on this ship, with limited places.4 On L'Austral, Le Boréal and Le Lyrial, by contrast, kayaking is extra, at €350 for one 1.5-hour session.12 The Weddell Sea voyage adds "polar hiking on foot, snowshoes or skis."8 Every activity depends on ice and weather, and Ponant does not guarantee that every guest can do every activity.4

Ponant sets a minimum age for each one:4

ActivityMinimum ageNotes
Zodiac outings8children must follow the guides' instructions on their own4
Hiking104
Dog sled ride12East Greenland only, early in the Arctic season, run by a local partner4
Ice fishing124
Sea kayak1616 and 17 only with a parent4
Polar plunge16 in the FAQ, 15 on voyage pagesin a swimsuit, no wetsuit; under 18 only with a parent458

The polar plunge needs paperwork. Bring a paper copy of an electrocardiogram (EKG) less than a year old, because none can be done on board, and expect a check by the ship's doctor before you jump.5 Ponant's FAQ also asks for a medical certificate allowing you to swim in polar waters and a swimming certificate.4 A parka rated for colder conditions is waiting in your stateroom, and boots, snowshoes and walking poles are lent on board.4 Ponant says temperatures in the areas the ship visits have averaged 14°F (minus 10°C) over the past 20 years and advises warmer layers than for a standard polar trip.4

What are the cabins like?

Every stateroom and suite has a private balcony or terrace. The two entry categories are both 215 sq ft (20 m²) and sit on different decks.3 Fares for the December 16, 2027 Weddell Sea departure, per person in a double, read on October 14, 2026:

CategorySizeGuestsFrom, per person
Lower deck balcony stateroom215 sq ft (20 m²)2$29,6005
Upper decks balcony stateroom215 sq ft (20 m²)2$30,1205
Deluxe Suite301 sq ft (28 m²)2$31,4105
Prestige Suite430 sq ft (40 m²)4$42,5905
Grand Suite452 sq ft (42 m²)3$45,1805
Privilege Suite516 sq ft (48 m²)4$47,7805
Duplex Suite1,011 sq ft (94 m²)4$64,6505
Owner's Suite1,237 sq ft (115 m²)6$94,3805

On this sailing the Deluxe Suite costs $1,810 more per person than the cheapest stateroom, for 86 sq ft (8 m²) more space; above that, prices climb fast (our arithmetic).5 Public spaces include an indoor pool, a snow room, the Blue Lagoon, a fire pit, a cigar lounge, a spa and a theater, and the open bar on this ship includes Veuve Clicquot or Henriot champagne.4 Two laboratories and more than 1,076 sq ft (100 m²) are set aside for science, and Ponant says it has hosted more than 100 researchers since 2021.3 Our balcony guide covers what a balcony is worth in the polar regions.

Where does it sail, and does it go to the South Pole?

Le Commandant Charcot sails to the Geographic North Pole in the northern summer and to the Weddell Sea, the Antarctic Circle and the Ross Sea region in the southern summer. No published voyage goes to the geographic South Pole, which lies inland on the polar plateau. In 2021 it became the first French ship to reach the North Pole.13

It will not be in Antarctica in the 2026-27 season. From November 2026 to April 2027 it sails the Baltic, the St. Lawrence and Greenland, so a 2026-27 traveler who wants this ship in the ice should look at its spring voyages from Nuuk around Greenland, listed from $20,650 per person in April 2027 (an advertised fare we did not check for availability).14 Its next Antarctic voyage leaves Ushuaia on October 27, 2027.5

The polar voyages on sale when we checked on October 14, 2026, per person in a double. We rechecked every row except the Beyond the Antarctic Circle and Eastern Antarctica voyages on October 15, 2026; only the July 10 fare had changed. "Advertised from" is Ponant's headline fare; the last column is the cheapest stateroom category not marked "Sold out".1517

Unexplored Eastern Antarctica between Two ContinentsHobart to UshuaiaFeb 11, 202930$88,220$88,22031

Three things to know about those numbers. First, the gap between the two price columns can be large, and it moves fast. On October 14 the July 10 North Pole and Greenland voyage had nothing on sale below a $100,130 Grand Suite, $36,690 above the advertised fare. On October 15 a $67,730 Deluxe Suite was back on sale, $4,290 above it, while both balcony categories stayed sold out (our arithmetic).18 For the North Pole itself, the cheapest way aboard is a 12-night round trip at $44,370, or the September 13 voyage with east Greenland at $54,980.2928 Second, every Arctic voyage includes a flight between Paris and Longyearbyen in Svalbard, both ways on the round trips and one way on the others.62627 The Weddell Sea voyages include a hotel night in Santiago, Chile, and economy flights between Santiago and Ushuaia.5 Third, the PONANT Bonus discount shrinks as a departure fills, and 2028 North Pole dates are already on sale from $39,640.196

If getting closer to the South Pole is the point, look at the Western Antarctica voyage: it reaches the Ross Sea, which Ponant calls the southernmost sea in the world.16 It crosses the Antarctic Circle and visits Marguerite Bay, Charcot Island and the islands off Marie Byrd Land. It then sails along the Ross Ice Shelf and, ice permitting, tries for Cape Adare, Terra Nova Bay and Shackleton's hut at Cape Royds on Ross Island, before the Balleny Islands and Hobart.16 On the North Pole voyage Ponant offers "opportunities to glimpse or observe" polar bears, seabirds and whales, not a promise of them.6 The Weddell Sea voyage is pitched at emperor penguins, which Ponant says "live here."8

What are the alternatives to Le Commandant Charcot?

For the Antarctic Peninsula alone, Ponant's sister ships cost far less: a 10-night voyage on Le Boréal in December 2026 starts at $16,850.20 Seabourn Venture is the closest luxury rival in size, with 264 guests and a PC6 hull, and none of its 2027 Arctic voyages goes to Svalbard or the North Pole.721 For emperor penguins by helicopter, Quark Expeditions sends Ultramarine toward the Snow Hill colony in the Weddell Sea.22 Our guide on how to choose an Antarctica cruise sets the options side by side.

Is Le Commandant Charcot worth it?

It is worth it if you want routes few expedition ships attempt: the Geographic North Pole, the deep Weddell Sea, or the Ross Sea by way of Marie Byrd Land. For a first trip to the Peninsula it is hard to justify. Its cheapest Weddell Sea cabin, $29,600 for 12 nights in December 2027, works out at about $2,467 a night. Ponant's cheapest 10-night Peninsula voyage, $16,850 on Le Boréal in December 2026, is about $1,685 a night. That is roughly $780 more per night, or $12,750 more per trip, and you still cross the Drake (our arithmetic; the fares come from different seasons because Charcot has no 2026-27 Antarctic voyages).520 If you do book, book early: the cheapest categories sell out first.18

Our verdict

The ship to book for the Geographic North Pole, the deep Weddell Sea or a Ross Sea crossing to Hobart, with kayaking and an open bar included. For a first Antarctic Peninsula trip it costs about $780 more per night than Ponant's sister ships, it still crosses the Drake, and it has no Antarctic sailings until October 2027.

Best for: North Pole voyages, emperor penguin searches in the Weddell Sea, Ross Sea expeditions, travelers who want kayaking included, repeat polar travelers
