Svalbard
How to visit Svalbard: flights to Longyearbyen, entry for US citizens, the cruise season month by month, your chances of seeing a polar bear, the wildlife rules and what cruises cost.
What is Svalbard, and how do you visit it?
Svalbard is Norway's high Arctic archipelago of polar bears, walruses and glaciers, where 2,504 people live in Longyearbyen and Ny-Ålesund. Fly from Oslo to Longyearbyen in about 3 hours; Svalbard needs no visa of its own. Expedition cruises run May to September, best June to August, and HX's 9-day spring voyage for 2027 starts at $7,857 with Oslo flights included.

- June to August
- Getting there
- Fly to Longyearbyen on SAS or Norwegian: about 3 hours from Oslo or 1.5 hours from Tromsø. Some cruise fares include the flight, such as HX's from Oslo, Aurora's charter from Oslo and Quark's charters from Helsinki.
- Wildlife
- Polar bears (the Barents Sea population was estimated at about 2,650 in 2004), about 5,500 walruses (2018 survey), Svalbard reindeer, Arctic foxes, seabird cliffs and whales.
- Landings
- Stay at least 1,000 ft (300 m) from polar bears, or 1,640 ft (500 m) from March 1 to June 30. In protected areas, tourist landings only at mapped sites with a guide, and ships carrying more than 200 passengers may not enter their waters.
Svalbard is Norway's high Arctic archipelago, and its largest island, Spitsbergen, is where expedition cruises from Longyearbyen go to look for polar bears, walruses and glaciers.20 You fly to Longyearbyen, the main town (2,504 people lived in Longyearbyen and Ny-Ålesund in the second half of 2026), and board a small ship there or arrive on an operator's charter.131618 Cruises run from May to September under strict wildlife rules: you must stay at least 1,000 ft (300 m) from any polar bear, and ships with more than 200 passengers cannot enter the waters of the national parks and nature reserves.12
What is the best month to visit Svalbard?
For a cruise, June to August is the best window: the midnight sun lasts all trip long, the circumnavigation voyages run, and HX and Aurora Expeditions both list departures in each of those months.121920 Choose late May or June for snow on the mountains and more sea ice, and July or August if you want a full circumnavigation.1121 Here is the year as the official data and the operators' schedules describe it:
| Period | Sun in Longyearbyen | Sea ice | What runs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Late October to mid-February | Polar night: no sunrise from October 27, 2026 to February 15, 202712 | Building toward its spring peak11 | No expedition cruises; the main season for the northern lights21 |
| Mid-February to mid-April | Sun returns on February 16; days lengthen fast12 | Barents Sea ice is normally at its largest in April11 | No expedition cruises; the 1,640 ft (500 m) bear distance applies from March 11 |
| Mid-April to June | Midnight sun from about April 19, 202712 | Shrinking from its April peak11 | HX's Svalbard in Spring voyages run May to June19 |
| July and August | Midnight sun until about August 23, 202712 | Retreating; July is the warmest month, averaging 37°F to 46°F (3°C to 8°C)21 | Circumnavigation voyages; HX runs them June to September19 |
| September | The sun sets again from August 2412 | Barents Sea ice is normally at its smallest in September11 | Last cruises of the season19 |
Two seasonal rules change what you see. From May 15 to August 15, 16 bird reserves along the west coast are closed to all traffic, and from April 1 to August 31 boats must slow to 5 knots within 1,640 ft (500 m) of mapped bird cliffs.61 For the trade-offs between months on the other side of the world, see the best time to visit Antarctica.
What are the chances of seeing a polar bear in Svalbard?
Good, according to the operators, but nobody publishes official odds or sighting rates by month, and no operator guarantees a sighting. Oceanwide Expeditions says you have a good chance in Svalbard but that sightings cannot be guaranteed, and that sea ice is the best place to look.21 The Barents Sea population, shared between Norway and Russia, was estimated at 2,650 bears (plus or minus about 30%) in 2004, and a 2015 survey of the Norwegian part showed no sign of a decline.9
What raises your odds is time near the ice. Polar bears depend on sea ice to hunt seals, and the ice around Svalbard is at its smallest in late summer and shrinking over the decades; the Norwegian Polar Institute warns the Polar Basin could be ice-free in summer within a few years.911 The five main denning areas the institute monitors, Hopen, Kongsøya, Storfjorden, Kvitøya and Nordaustlandet, are all on the eastern side of the archipelago, away from Longyearbyen; a circumnavigation sails that side as well as the west.9 If a bear is the reason you are going, pick a voyage of 11 days or more that circles the archipelago. That advice is our reasoning from the denning areas and the sea-ice data, not a published sighting rate. Read more on our polar bear page.
What are the polar bear safety rules in Svalbard?
Since January 1, 2025, no one may travel or stay closer than about 1,000 ft (300 m) to a polar bear, or about 1,640 ft (500 m) from March 1 to June 30, and anyone who finds a bear closer than that must move away.13 The distance limit does not apply in settlements, research stations, cabins or tents.3 The law also bans luring, pursuing or unnecessarily disturbing a bear.3
On a cruise, the rules of AECO, the Arctic expedition cruise operators' association, shape every landing:7
- Expedition staff scout the landing site for bears before any passenger goes ashore, and there is no landing in fog or other low visibility.
- Guides carrying firearms and other deterrents lead the group.
- No boat follows a swimming bear, from any angle; if one is sighted, boats retreat to at least 660 ft (200 m) or the legal minimum, whichever is greater.
Independent travelers outside the settlements must carry suitable means of scaring bears off; on a cruise, the guides carry firearms and flare guns for the group.347 Hunting has been banned since 1973, after a century in which some 300 bears a year were killed around Svalbard.9
What environmental rules apply to a Svalbard cruise?
About 65% of Svalbard's land and 84% of its territorial waters are protected, in 7 national parks, 21 nature reserves and a geotope area, and the rules there are what decide which ship you should book.6
- Ship size: ships calling in the marine areas of the national parks, nature reserves and bird reserves may carry no more than 200 passengers.2 A larger ship cannot take you into those protected waters.
- Landings: in most protected areas, tourist landings are allowed only at mapped sites and only with a guide; at sites marked blue, there must be 1 guide per 12 people and no more than 39 people ashore at once.24
- Walruses: boats keep at least 490 ft (150 m) from walrus haul-outs and slow to 5 knots within 980 ft (300 m).1 AECO adds that landings should be at least 980 ft (300 m) from a haul-out, in groups of fewer than 50.8
- Drones: banned in protected areas, and within 1,640 ft (500 m) of bird cliffs from April 1 to August 31.1
- History: everything left by people before 1946, from trappers' cabins to walrus bones, is automatically protected, with a 330 ft (100 m) safety zone around it.4
- Camping: tourist camping needs a permit from the Governor, applied for at least four weeks ahead, and a polar bear guard.1
- Guides: from July 1, 2027, approved Svalbard guides will be required.4
Every visitor also pays an environmental fee of NOK 150, which airlines and cruise lines add to the ticket.4 The walruses show the rules working: protected since 1952, when about 100 were left, they now number about 5,503 in the Svalbard area (2018 survey).10
What is the best Svalbard cruise, and how much does it cost?
For most first-timers, the best Svalbard cruise is an 11 to 15 day circumnavigation on a ship of 200 passengers or fewer, in July or August, because it gives the most days near the ice where bears are found.919 On a budget, HX's 9-day Svalbard in Spring was the cheapest summer 2027 trip we found: $7,857 per person at the regular fare, or $7,227 with the current offer, flights from Oslo included.22 Fares for summer 2027 listed on October 14, 2026, per person in US dollars, lowest cabin for two sharing:
| Voyage | Length | Ship | Flights | Regular fare | Price shown |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| HX, Svalbard in Spring (June 5, 2027) | 9 days | MS Spitsbergen | Round trip from Oslo | $7,857 | $7,22722 |
| Quark Expeditions, Spitsbergen Highlights (June 25, 2027) | 8 days | Ultramarine | Charter from Helsinki, hotel included | $9,890 | Brochure fare only25 |
| HX, Circumnavigating Spitsbergen (August 14 or September 4, 2027) | 11 days | MS Spitsbergen | Round trip from Oslo | $10,160 | $9,30623 |
| Aurora Expeditions, Spitsbergen: Realm of Ice and Wildlife (August 17, 2027) | 8 days | Douglas Mawson | Charter from Oslo, Oslo hotel night included | $14,895 | $11,17126 |
| HX, Circumnavigating Svalbard (August 23, 2027) | 14 days | MS Spitsbergen | Round trip from Oslo | $12,771 | $11,66224 |
| Quark Expeditions, Spitsbergen Circumnavigation (June 30, 2027) | 15 days | Ultramarine | Charter from Helsinki, hotel included | $23,190 | Brochure fare only25 |
Quark's fares include charter flights from Helsinki and airport hotel nights, a package it values at $1,495; the lower prices on its site need a promotion code, so we list its brochure fares.1825 Its 2028 fares are lower than its 2027 ones: Spitsbergen Highlights from $7,970 and the circumnavigation from $17,470, against $8,774 at the regular fare for HX's cheapest 2028 spring sailing.171822 So for 2027, HX's 9-day spring voyage is the cheapest trip we found; for 2028, Quark's 8-day trip is. HX's 14-day circumnavigation costs less than Quark's 15-day one in both years.172425 Oceanwide also sails Around Spitsbergen and North Spitsbergen voyages on ships including Hondius.21
Can US citizens travel to Svalbard, and how do you get there?
Yes: Svalbard needs no visa of its own, and from the US you fly to Oslo, then about 3 hours north to Longyearbyen; flights via Tromsø take about 1.5 hours for the last leg.516 SAS and Norwegian both fly there: Norwegian normally flies weekly from Oslo all year, SAS flies several times a week directly and via Tromsø, and both add flights from March to August.16 Many cruise fares include the flight: HX's Svalbard in Spring and circumnavigation voyages include round-trip flights from Oslo, and Quark runs group charters from Helsinki.1819
You need a passport. Svalbard is outside the Schengen area, so everyone goes through identity control, Norwegians included.16 Svalbard itself requires no visa, but if your nationality needs a Schengen visa you must have one to travel via mainland Norway, and it should be a double-entry visa so you can return.5
Can you go inside the Svalbard Global Seed Vault?
No. Only authorized personnel may enter the Seed Vault, which offers a virtual tour instead.15 The vault opened on February 26, 2008, with its storage halls more than 330 ft (100 m) inside the mountain, and it holds more than 1.2 million seed samples of a 4.5 million capacity.14 It has no staff and is opened only on pre-arranged dates to receive deposits, so visitors can see only the outside.15
Is a trip to Svalbard worth it?
Yes, if you want polar bears, walruses and glaciers on a short trip: the cruises in the table above last 8 to 15 days, and Longyearbyen is about 3 hours by air from Oslo.162225 Skip it if a guaranteed polar bear is the only reason to go: Oceanwide says sightings cannot be guaranteed, and with the legal distance limits, HX tells guests to pack binoculars to spot bears from the ship.11921 Skip the shortest trips if you want bears and walruses at their best odds, and choose a circumnavigation instead. If you can make only one polar trip and the polar bear is not the deciding animal, compare it with the Antarctic Peninsula.
