Churchill is a small town on the western shore of Hudson Bay in northern Manitoba, about 620 miles (1,000 km) north of Winnipeg, and it bills itself as the Polar Bear Capital of the World.12 No road reaches it; you arrive by plane or train.1 Each October and November about 600 polar bears are active along the Hudson Bay shore, waiting for the bay to freeze so they can go back to hunting seals on the ice.123 The same town is a summer base for beluga whales and a winter one for the northern lights.1 Below: when to go, how the tours work and what they cost for 2027, how to get there and the rules that keep people and bears apart.

When is polar bear season in Churchill?

October and November are the peak months, and October to early November is Travel Manitoba's pick.1 The bears come ashore in mid-to-late July, when the ice on Hudson Bay melts, and stay on land until it freezes again in late November or early December.3 Natural Habitat Adventures says bears are around Churchill all year but most concentrated in October and November, that viewing is "never predictable," and that the bay has historically frozen in early December.4 The season is under way as we write: by October 11, 2026, conservation officers had logged 184 polar bear reports in and near town and handled 11 bears; the 2025 season ended with 292 reports and 21 bears handled.1011

How do you see polar bears in Churchill?

You watch them from a tundra vehicle, a remote wildlife lodge, on a guided walk or from a helicopter, according to Travel Manitoba.1 The tundra vehicles run in the Churchill Wildlife Management Area, a stretch of Hudson Bay coast protected by the province, where Manitoba limits how many tour operators and vehicles may operate.15 Since 2025 the cap is 18 vehicles, all run by Frontiers North and Great White Bear Tours.21

  • Tundra Buggies. Frontiers North says it is one of only two operators with commercial permits to drive specialized vehicles over the management area's trails, and that it holds 12 of the 18 permits issued. Its Tundra Buggies, first built in Churchill in 1979, seat 40, but its package tours carry no more than 22 guests, and it is converting the fleet to electric vehicles.5 It also runs the Tundra Buggy Lodge at Polar Bear Point, inside the management area.5
  • Polar Rovers. Natural Habitat Adventures works with Great White Bear Tours, which holds another permit, and limits groups to about 16 on vehicles that hold more than 30. It says operators without a permit can only drive the road to Halfway Point.4
  • Lodges on the coast. Churchill Wild flies guests to its own lodges. Seal River Heritage Lodge is 37 miles (60 km) north of Churchill, with two guided outings a day for ground-level viewing; Dymond Lake Ecolodge trips add a chartered Tundra Buggy tour.89
  • By the day. Without a package, Travel Manitoba lists Tundra Buggy day tours, Great White Bear day tours and helicopter flights from Hudson Bay Helicopters or Custom Heli.2 For fall 2026, though, Great White Bear was not selling individual day tours, and most of Frontiers North's 8-hour autumn day tours, at CAD 657.14 per adult, were sold out.2425
  • Lazy Bear. The town's tour list still names Lazy Bear Lodge and Expeditions for packaged bookings,17 but Manitoba rescinded its two tundra vehicle permits for 2025, cutting the fleet from 20 to 18 and citing the decline of Western Hudson Bay bears; the company was challenging that in court in September 2026.2122

Wapusk National Park, a 4,430 sq mi (11,475 km²) park that protects one of the world's largest polar bear denning areas, can be visited only with a licensed tour operator.16 Our polar bear tours guide compares Churchill with ship-based trips elsewhere in the Arctic.

How much does a Churchill polar bear tour cost?

For 2027, a 5-day to 6-day package from Winnipeg starts at US$8,995 plus charter flights with Natural Habitat Adventures, or CAD 8,927 with flights included from Frontiers North; Churchill Wild's fly-in lodge trips cost about twice as much.478 These are the lowest fares we found on each operator's own page on October 15, 2026, per person with two sharing:

Single travelers pay more: US$995 extra on Nat Hab's 6-day trip, and CAD 35,695 for a private room on the Seal River safari.48 Churchill Wild leaves taxes and gratuities out of its prices.89 Travel Manitoba advises booking at least a year ahead; October and November are the busiest weeks.2

When can you see beluga whales in Churchill?

July and August, when more than 55,000 belugas migrate through Hudson Bay and play in the Churchill River estuary.1 They move into the warmer river water after the ice breaks up, and tour boats carry hydrophones so you can hear their whistles and clicks.13 The town lists four beluga tour operators for July and August: Churchill Custom Tours, Lazy Bear Lodge and Expeditions, Sea North Tours and Sup-North, offering boat, kayak and paddleboard trips.13 Polar bears are ashore at the same time, so a July or August visit can include both, though Travel Manitoba warns there are no guarantees.12

When is the best time to see the northern lights in Churchill?

January to March, when the nights are longest and the skies clearest.114 Travel Manitoba says the aurora shows on an average of 300 nights a year, and the town calls Churchill one of the top three places on the planet to see it.114 The town lists aurora tours from Discover Churchill, Frontiers North, Great White Bear Tours, Nanuk Operations, North Star Tours and Sub Arctic Explorers.14

What are the polar bear safety rules in Churchill?

If you see a bear in or near town, call the Polar Bear Alert line at 204-675-2327; it is monitored 24 hours a day from mid-summer to freeze-up.3 Polar Bear Alert staff from Manitoba's conservation service chase bears away from the town, and bears that keep coming back are held in the Polar Bear Holding Facility, then flown out by helicopter or released onto the ice once it forms.310 One bear was in the facility at the end of the week of October 5 to 11, 2026.10

The rules for visitors, from the safety pamphlet issued by the town, the province and Parks Canada:3

  • Do not walk or cycle out of town in September, October or November.
  • In the fall, groups of three or fewer should take a taxi or a designated driver after 10 p.m., and stay on lit main streets.
  • Never go past a polar bear warning sign, and never approach a seal or whale carcass.
  • If you hear cracker shells, a bear is being chased out of town: get to safety and keep away from the officers.
  • Wapusk National Park, Prince of Wales Fort with Cape Merry and Sloop Cove, and York Factory should never be visited without a licensed guide or Parks Canada staff, and visitors may not carry firearms in national parks.

Are Churchill's polar bears declining?

Very likely. Churchill's bears belong to the Western Hudson Bay subpopulation, which the IUCN Polar Bear Specialist Group estimated at 618 in 2021, 26.7% fewer than in 2016 (partly because some bears temporarily moved to a neighboring area), and rates as very likely decreased over both the long and short term.18 The group's concerns include harvest, more time spent onshore as the ice breaks up earlier and freezes later, poorer body condition and lower productivity.18 The research group Polar Bears International is based in Churchill and studies sea-ice loss and conflict between people and bears.1 The polar bear page has the species picture.

What else is there to do in Churchill?

History, mostly. Henry Hudson explored the bay in 1608, and the Danish crew of Jens Munck wintered here in 1619 to 1620, when 62 of 64 men died.15 The Hudson's Bay Company set up a post in 1689, and rivalry between the English and French later produced a military fort that Governor Samuel Hearne surrendered to a superior French force in 1782.15 The never-completed 18th-century stone Prince of Wales Fort, a fur trade outpost, is now a national historic site.13 The US Air Force opened Fort Churchill east of town in 1942, and the base closed in 1980.15 In town, the Itsanitaq Museum holds Inuit carvings and artifacts dating back to Pre-Dorset times, Cape Merry looks over the river mouth to the fort, and outfitters run dog sled rides and guided visits to the Ithaca, a ship that ran aground in the 1960s.2 Parks Canada runs a visitor centre in the railway station.3
