Is Natural Habitat Adventures good for polar bear tours?
Yes, if you want a small guided group in Churchill and are happy to pay in US dollars for it. Natural Habitat Adventures, known as Nat Hab, began its Churchill polar bear tours in 1989 and limits its classic trip to 16 travelers, in vehicles that hold more than 30.12 Its guides meet the group in Winnipeg and stay with it, and its Churchill Expedition Leaders have guided polar bear trips for an average of 10 years each.3 We have not traveled with Nat Hab; this page is built from its published trips, prices and terms, read on October 15, 2026.
The company traces itself to a teacher-student travel business Ben Bressler started in 1985; it took the Natural Habitat name in 1987, moved to Boulder, Colorado, in 1994, and has been World Wildlife Fund's travel partner since 2003.1 Nat Hab says it joined forces with National Geographic-Lindblad Expeditions in 2016, and Lindblad Expeditions' annual report now calls it "our land-based subsidiary" and lists its office in Louisville, Colorado.14 Nat Hab itself is in neither IAATO's Antarctic member directory, which lists Lindblad Expeditions, nor AECO's Arctic one.56
Which Natural Habitat polar bear tours run in 2027?
Nine Churchill trips, from classic town-based tours to a private lodge on the tundra, with summer and photography versions.7 The ones with 2027 prices we could read:

How much does a Natural Habitat polar bear tour cost?
The cheapest 2027 trip is $10,684 all in: $8,995 for the 6-day Classic Polar Bear Expedition with two sharing, plus $1,689 for the private charter between Winnipeg and Churchill.2 By our arithmetic that is about $1,781 a day. A solo traveler adds $995 on the 6-day trip and $1,295 on the 7-day and photo trips.2
The price covers hotels, Expedition Leaders, the Polar Rover outings, a dog sledding trip, evening talks, meals from dinner on day 1 to breakfast on the last day, the use of a parka and boots, airport transfers, and taxes, permits and service fees. It leaves out your flights to Winnipeg, alcohol, some tips and insurance, and Nat Hab requires a policy with at least $250,000 of medical evacuation cover.2
On the lodge trips the single supplement drops to $195 on the Tundra Lodge Adventure and $795 on Ultimate Churchill; at the Tundra Lodge every guest already has a private cabin.311 By our reading, that makes the lodge the better buy for solo travelers.
What is Natural Habitat's Tundra Lodge like?
A lodge on wheels built like a train, parked on a spit of land where Hudson Bay's ice first forms, so bears tend to arrive there early in the season. Each of the 29 guests has a compact private cabin with a berth and a window, and steel-grate platforms join the cars.3 Two Expedition Leaders travel with the group, and the Polar Rovers usually carry no more than 16 guests each on excursions.3
The 6-day Tundra Lodge Adventure costs $15,895 plus air in most of October; the 7-day Ultimate Churchill trip adds two nights in town for $12,995 plus air, less than the pure lodge trip.311 Frontiers North's Tundra Buggy Lodge is the obvious rival: it sleeps up to 40 in two shared sleeper units, each guest in a bunk with a privacy curtain rather than a private cabin, and its 7-day Town and Polar Bears package costs CAD 16,927.1314
What is a Polar Rover, and is it better than a Tundra Buggy?
It is Nat Hab's tundra vehicle, built by a partner in Manitoba and operated with Great White Bear Tours, one of only two companies with vehicle permits on the coastal plain of the Churchill Wildlife Management Area.215 Its rear platform has a steel-mesh floor, and Nat Hab says curious bears occasionally wander beneath its vehicles, "sometimes mere inches away".10
Frontiers North's Tundra Buggies have a metal-grate rear deck too, seat 40, and carry no more than 22 on package tours.16 The real difference is the group: about 16 on Nat Hab's classic trip against up to 22 on Frontiers North's packages. Frontiers North holds 12 of the 18 permits, which by our arithmetic leaves six for Great White Bear.1715
Does Natural Habitat run summer and helicopter polar bear trips?
Yes. Its 7-day summer trip, with weekly departures from July 22 to August 19, 2027 (the last one ends August 25), from $9,295 plus air, meets beluga whales by Zodiac and kayak and looks for caribou, Arctic foxes and polar bears.78 Some 3,000 belugas move into the Seal and Churchill rivers in summer, and Nat Hab says guests may see mothers with cubs, which "remain in the area all summer long".8 An 8-day Churchill Autumn trip in August and September, listed from $9,795 plus air on a trip card that does not say for which year, combines bears, whales and the northern lights.7
The Polar Bear Quest & Helicopter Safari, $11,995 plus air for 7 days, adds a helicopter flight to a vacant polar bear den, a dog sled ride through the boreal forest and heated Aurora Domes for the northern lights, with a maximum of 15 guests.10
What are Natural Habitat's booking and cancellation terms?
A nonrefundable deposit of $500 on the classic trip and $1,000 or $1,500 on the lodge and helicopter trips.23 Cancel 121 days or more before departure and you pay at least $200 per person, or the nonrefundable deposit where that is higher; from 61 to 120 days the fee is 50% of the whole trip price, internal air included, and inside 60 days it is 100%.18 Insurance bought through Nat Hab cannot be refunded after its 10-day review period.18
How does Natural Habitat compare with Frontiers North and Churchill Wild?
Nat Hab is the small-group option: priced in US dollars with the charter flight extra, against Frontiers North's Canadian-dollar packages with flights included, and always inside a vehicle or lodge, where Churchill Wild walks. Prices are each company's own, not converted.

Choose Frontiers North for the lowest package price or to travel with a Polar Bears International scientist;26 choose Churchill Wild if you want to stand at ground level with a bear and can pay more than twice Frontiers North's entry price. Our polar bear tours guide sets Churchill against Svalbard, Greenland, Baffin Island and Alaska.
Does Natural Habitat go to Svalbard, Greenland or Antarctica?
Yes. Its Svalbard trip, In Search of Iconic Arctic Wildlife, is a 10-day voyage from April to June on a Lindblad ship for up to 138 travelers, sold "through our partner, National Geographic-Lindblad Expeditions", from $14,500 plus air as listed on October 15, 2026, with no season shown.27 Its polar listing the same day also showed a 10-day East Greenland camp from $16,195 plus air and four Antarctic trips: Antarctica Direct, flying the Drake Passage, 8 to 10 days from $9,600; a 12-day Voyage to Antarctica from $13,500 plus air; 21 or 22 days with South Georgia and the Falklands from $22,715 plus air; and 10 days on a private small ship for 12 guests from $24,995.28 Check the terms before you book one: Nat Hab's policy says its expedition cruises follow the ship operator's own cancellation rules, and it sets stricter ones for trips it calls Sailing Antarctica and Ultimate Antarctica, with final payment due 180 days out, 50% lost from 179 days and all of it inside 89.18 For those voyages, compare our Lindblad Expeditions page and our Svalbard and Greenland pages.
Who should skip Natural Habitat?
Budget travelers: Nat Hab's cheapest fall trip is $10,684 once the charter is added, while Frontiers North sells 5 days with flights from Winnipeg for CAD 8,927.219 Anyone who wants to walk among bears: Nat Hab's Churchill trips watch them from Polar Rovers and the Tundra Lodge.7 And anyone who might cancel late: from 120 days out you lose half the trip price.18
Our verdict
The small-group way to see Churchill's bears: 15 or 16 guests per Polar Rover trip, Expedition Leaders from Winnipeg onward, and a 29-guest Tundra Lodge with private cabins. You pay in US dollars plus a separate $1,689 charter fare, cannot walk among bears, and lose half the price if you cancel inside 120 days.
