What is Scoresby Sund, and how do you visit it?

Scoresby Sund (Kangertittivaq) in East Greenland is the world's largest fjord system, about 14,700 square miles (38,000 km²) with an arm reaching 217 miles (350 km) inland. Most visitors come on summer expedition ships from Iceland or Svalbard, from $6,250 for a shared berth on Oceanwide's 10-day 2027 trip; independent travelers fly from Akureyri to Constable Point, 25 miles (40 km) from the only town.

Facts checked October 15, 2026 against 29 sources.

Getting there
Expedition cruises from Akureyri or Reykjavík in Iceland, or from Longyearbyen in Svalbard. Independent travelers fly Norlandair from Akureyri to Nerlerit Inaat (Constable Point), then cross about 25 miles (40 km) to Ittoqqortoormiit by helicopter, boat or snowmobile.
Wildlife
Muskoxen on the tundra, polar bears on ice near glacier fronts, narwhals, seals and occasional walruses, Arctic foxes, hares and reindeer, and seabirds such as fulmars and kittiwakes.
Landings
Landing slots are booked through AECO before the season and the expedition leader picks sites around ice and weather. In Ittoqqortoormiit, ask before photographing people, leave sled dogs alone and carry Danish kroner, as there is no ATM.

Scoresby Sund, Kangertittivaq in Greenlandic and often spelled Scoresbysund or Scoresby Sound, is the world's largest fjord system, says Visit Greenland.111 Heritage Expeditions puts its area at some 14,700 square miles (38,000 km²) of East Greenland, almost the size of Switzerland, with its longest arm running about 217 miles (350 km) inland.2 Its only town, Ittoqqortoormiit, had 328 residents at the start of 2026, while Statistics Greenland counted 5,634 cruise passengers landing there in 2025.34 Ships come from Iceland and Svalbard in summer, and the lowest 2027 fare we found is $6,250 for a shared berth on a 10-day Oceanwide trip.56

Where is Scoresby Sund?

On Greenland's east coast, facing the Greenland Sea well north of the Arctic Circle; ships from northern Iceland cross the circle on the way and first sight the mouth near Kap Brewster.6 Ittoqqortoormiit stands near the entrance at 70°29'N, 21°58'W, the uninhabited Blosseville Coast runs south of the fjord, and the southern border of the Northeast Greenland National Park lies about 50 miles (80 km) from Nerlerit Inaat airport.789

How do you get to Scoresby Sund?

By expedition cruise, which Visit Greenland calls the best way to see the national park next door; most sail from Iceland and a few come south from Svalbard.5 Oceanwide boards in Akureyri, a six-hour drive from Reykjavík with an optional $165 bus each way, and Poseidon sails from Reykjavík after a hotel night it pays for.61 From Longyearbyen, several voyages stop at Jan Mayen first, and some bundle the flight to Svalbard: a compulsory $500 package from Oslo on Polar Latitudes, an included Oslo charter on Atlas, and a Paris hotel night and flight on Heritage.1229132

Independent travelers can fly Norlandair from Akureyri to Nerlerit Inaat (Constable Point), a route with a few departures a week all year, then cross the last 25 miles (40 km) to Ittoqqortoormiit by helicopter, boat or snowmobile.911 There are no direct internal flights to the town from the rest of Greenland, and Greenland Airports describes Nerlerit Inaat as a transit airport rather than a settlement.1114 The town's single tour operator runs guided trips and can equip an independent expedition. For the bigger picture, see getting to Greenland.11

What do expedition ships see in Scoresby Sund?

Grounded icebergs, glacier fronts, muskox tundra, Thule ruins and the town of Ittoqqortoormiit. Landing slots are booked through AECO before the season, but the expedition leader sets the final plan around ice and weather (see expedition cruises explained).6 Oceanwide's plan for its September 2027 voyage on Plancius gives a good idea of the range:6

SiteWhat is there
Tyskit NunatWhere part of Alfred Wegener's research team wintered in 1930 to 1931; Wegener died on the ice cap that winter
SaakattaakajikRemains of Thule summer houses built with whale vertebrae
Bjørne Øer (Bear Islands)An archipelago at the eastern mouth of Øfjord
Øfjord and GrundtvigskirkenA narrow fjord between mountains over 6,562 ft (2,000 m) high
Hoffman PeninsulaTundra where muskoxen are often seen, crossed on a long hike from Harefjord to Rypefjord
VikingebugtA Zodiac cruise by a glacier front, with good chances of polar bears on ice shoals
Hurry Inlet, Liverpool LandA hunter's cabin built in 1930 and views to the Jurassic fossil cliffs of Neils Klinter
Steward ØWell-kept Thule dwellings and a lookout over nearby glaciers
Turner Sound and Rømer FjordStrong currents, occasional walruses, narwhals and warm springs halfway up Rømer Fjord

Polar Latitudes describes the Bjørne Islands as a labyrinth of skerries that traps huge icebergs, and adds the basalt mountains of Cape Brewster and abandoned European and Inuit settlements.15 On Oceanwide's long hikes, groups of up to 24 walk about 9 miles (15 km) in six hours, free but booked in advance.6

What wildlife lives in Scoresby Sund?

Muskoxen, polar bears, narwhals, seals, walruses, Arctic foxes and seabirds, though sightings are never guaranteed.6161 Visit Greenland calls the Ittoqqortoormiit area the place in Greenland with the highest chance of meeting a polar bear, and says the odds in the national park to the north are considerably higher than elsewhere in the country.115

AnimalWhere ships look
MuskoxHoffman Peninsula and Hareelv, where Oceanwide often finds them6
Polar bearIce shoals in Vikingebugt and glacier ice near Steward Ø6
NarwhalSteward Ø and Rømer Fjord6
WalrusOccasionally in Turner Sound6
Arctic fox, hare, reindeerOn the tundra around the fjords1016

SeabirdsFulmars, kittiwakes, gannets and guillemots on the crossing; glaucous gulls, ravens and common eiders in the fjords616

Bears come close to people here: Visit Greenland says they have been seen near populated areas in most years, advises against camping outside town without someone carrying a gun, and tells anyone leaving town without a guide to take a rifle and an emergency beacon or satellite phone.11 Oceanwide's long hikers walk with two armed staff while a Zodiac scouts the shore for bears ahead of them.6 See Arctic animals and polar bear tours.

Can you see the northern lights in Scoresby Sund?

Yes, on the late-season voyages. Poseidon times its East Greenland trip for the September equinox and says the skies over Scoresby Sund are often cleared by katabatic winds flowing off the Greenland ice sheet.1 Oceanwide's early September trip looks for the aurora on the crossing back to Iceland, and Aurora Expeditions named its August 25 voyage the Northern Lights Explorer.616 On land, Visit Greenland lists February to May for northern lights, dog sledding and snowmobiling from Ittoqqortoormiit.11

Which cruises go to Scoresby Sund in 2027?

These are the cheapest cabins each line was selling on its own website on October 15, 2026 (Seabourn and Lindblad on October 14), per person, with two sharing unless the cabin says otherwise. Iceland round trips cost least; Svalbard crossings add days and money.

Not every Greenland voyage goes in. Oceanwide's September 6 Northeast Greenland Extreme skips the fjord, Atlas showed no fares for its August 6 Midnight Sun Odyssey, and Aurora's other East Greenland trips name Scoresbysund only as a possibility that depends on ice.17252627 Compare routes in Greenland cruises, Arctic cruises and Svalbard cruises.

When is the best time to visit Scoresby Sund?

August and September for a cruise, when most passengers arrive; Visit Greenland's sailing and hiking season at Ittoqqortoormiit is July and August.411 Statistics Greenland's 2025 count of cruise passengers there peaked in September, and Poseidon expects little sea ice that late in the season.41 Earlier in summer the ice can win: Polar Latitudes warns that East Greenland's sea ice is some of the most persistent in the Arctic and the coast can be icebound even in midsummer, and Lindblad's June voyage turns for Iceland if the ice will not yield.1524

What is Ittoqqortoormiit like?

A small hunting town that Visit Greenland calls the most isolated in Greenland, set up by Danish authorities in 1925 and 100 years old in 2025.1115 The name means "the place with the big houses" in the East Greenlandic dialect, and its colonial Danish name, Scoresbysund, honored the Arctic explorer and whaler William Scoresby.11 Ship visitors see the church and the small museum, and Visit Greenland lists sled dog feeding, muskox wool spinning, national costume, folk dance and, on request, drum dancing.5 In summer, boats and kayaks reach abandoned settlements such as Cape Hope and Cape Tobin, or Uunartoq, whose hot spring reaches about 144°F (62°C), the warmest in Greenland.7

Before you go ashore, from AECO's community guidelines and Visit Greenland:711

  • There is no ATM. Most shops take major cards, and the only cash accepted is Danish kroner.
  • Only two supply ships a year arrive from Iceland, so go easy on food and essentials at the supermarket.
  • The town has one place to eat out, Orormersiarderdarpi Grill Café, and keeps its own time zone, UTC-1.
  • Ask before taking close-up photos of residents, especially children.
  • Do not approach, feed or touch sled dogs without the owner's permission.

Do you need a permit to visit Scoresby Sund?

Not on a cruise. A Government of Greenland permit is needed to enter the Northeast Greenland National Park, which ships reach in Kong Oscar Fjord and Kaiser Franz Josef Fjord north of Scoresby Sund, but the travel company arranges it for cruise passengers.51816 Independent travelers must apply to the Ministry of Science and Environment at least 12 weeks before departure, with the purpose of the trip, the itinerary and the safety equipment; only the Sirius sled patrol and a few Ittoqqortoormiit hunters go in without special permission.511 Inside the park, visitors may not hunt, fish or remove any object.5 Around town, Arctic char fishing needs a permit from the tourist information center.11
