What is the National Geographic Explorer ship?

National Geographic Explorer is Lindblad's oldest Antarctic ship: built in 1982 for Norway's Hurtigruten and rebuilt for expeditions in 2008, with 148 guests in 81 outside cabins, 13 with balconies. In 2026-27 she runs short trips that fly one or both ways across the Drake; fares start at $12,600 per person with flights, but that cabin was sold out.

What is National Geographic Explorer?

National Geographic Explorer is the oldest ship Lindblad Expeditions sends to Antarctica: built in 1982 for Hurtigruten, Norway's coastal express, and rebuilt in 2008 as an expedition ship.12 Lindblad says the Norwegian coast's sudden heavy seas demanded a ship that could handle deep swells and turn tightly, and that those traits and her size made her a natural fit for its fleet.3 The rebuild gave her an ice-reinforced hull, polar navigation equipment and large expanses of glass.3

Today she carries 148 guests and 99 staff and crew in 81 outside cabins on six decks, is 367 ft long and 54 ft wide, and sails under the Bahamas flag.21 Lindblad's other ships on Antarctic routes are much newer: National Geographic Endurance dates from 2020, National Geographic Resolution from 2021 and National Geographic Orion, which also flies guests across the Drake Passage, from 2003.14 Lindblad says she recently got updated suites in the Scandinavian style of its newer polar ships.2

Is National Geographic Explorer the ship that sank in Antarctica?

No. The ship that sank on November 23, 2007, after hitting ice in the Bransfield Strait near the South Shetland Islands, was a different, Liberian-registered vessel named Explorer (IMO 6924959); all 100 passengers and 54 crew got off, and the Norwegian ship Nordnorge rescued them.5 National Geographic Explorer is registered in the Bahamas and still sails for Lindblad.1

What are National Geographic Explorer's specs?

She is a fully stabilized ice-class ship, but Lindblad publishes no Polar Class for her, unlike the PC5 rating it gives Resolution and Endurance.26 PC5 means year-round operation in medium first-year ice.7 Side by side with her newer fleetmate:

IAATO allows no more than 100 visitors ashore at one site at a time, so not all 148 of her guests can land at a site together.10 Her toolkit includes Zodiacs, a fleet of double kayaks, a crow's nest camera, a hydrophone, underwater video cameras, a video microscope and an ROV.3 On board are a Chart Room below the open bridge, an observation lounge, a LEXspa treatment room, a sauna and a glass-enclosed gym, with Hurley prints of Shackleton's expedition on the walls.3 Lindblad lists a full-time doctor and a National Geographic photographer among her special features.3

Which cabin should you book on National Geographic Explorer?

All 81 cabins face outside, but only 13 have balconies, and the cheapest have portholes.3 The fares below are for the November 25, 2026 Fly the Drake trip, per person with two sharing, with the required $3,000 flights added, as Lindblad's booking system showed them on October 15, 2026:

The balcony cabins are the nine in Category 5, cabin 213 in Category 6 and the three Category 7 cabins, all on the Upper Deck.3 Categories 6 and 7 can sleep three, as can Category 3 cabins 341 and 343 on a sofa bed; the Category 3 triple fare on that trip was $9,217 each before flights.311 Category 6 and 7 guests get free laundry.12 Unlike Resolution's, her 14 solo cabins have windows, not balconies.3

For a solo traveler the dedicated cabins save money. On the July 24, 2027 Arctic Edges trip a Solo A cabin cost $10,900, against $14,800 for one person in a Category 1 cabin.11

How do the Fly the Drake trips on National Geographic Explorer work?

Instead of two days at sea each way across the Drake Passage, you fly about two hours from Puerto Natales in Chile to King George Island, landing at the Chilean station there, and board the ship in Antarctica.134 The 8-day trip on Explorer gives five nights aboard on the Antarctic Peninsula, with a hotel night in Puerto Natales before and after; Lindblad's 9 and 10-day versions use National Geographic Orion.4 The flights cost $3,000 per person on top of the cruise fare and are required.11

The Sail and Fly version boards in Ushuaia after a hotel night, sails the Drake south over two nights, spends five nights in Antarctica and flies back from King George Island to Puerto Natales, for a required $1,500 one way.411 Lindblad says delays and early departures are common, because low cloud, fog and strong wind at King George Island can stop flights in either direction, and both trips include an extra Puerto Natales hotel night if a flight is delayed.134 If the 8-day trip's charter still cannot fly south by 2 p.m. on Day 3, Lindblad cancels the trip and refunds the cruise fare and the flights in full.4 For the trade-offs, see fly or sail the Drake and Drake Passage seasickness.

Where does National Geographic Explorer sail in 2026-27?

From late October to early March she sails four itineraries, most of them short trips that fly at least one way.11 Fares per person with two sharing, read October 15, 2026:

Two Sail and Fly dates, December 19 and December 26, were sold out entirely.11 The season opener links South Georgia and the Falkland Islands with the Peninsula on a round trip from Ushuaia, after a first night in Buenos Aires.14 The season closer spends six days in Antarctica, then crosses to the Chilean fjords, Karukinka Natural Park in Tierra del Fuego and Torres del Paine before ending in Puerto Natales.15 Resolution runs that same trip from February 17 from $27,000.11 Every fare includes meals, beer, wine and spirits, crew gratuities and the use of kayaks.12

Where does National Geographic Explorer sail in the 2027 Arctic season?

After a spring in Europe she spends June to August between Iceland, Greenland and Canada.11

Arctic Edges costs about half the lowest 2027 Svalbard fare on Endurance, $14,500, and is a round trip from Reykjavik through Iceland's Westfjords to the coast of East Greenland, with hiking, Zodiac cruising and the option of whitewater rafting in Skagafjordur.1617 Fabled Lands of the North sails from Nuuk past Sisimiut and Disko Bay to Baffin Island, the Torngat Mountains on the Labrador coast and Newfoundland, with staff archaeologists aboard; Resolution repeats it from September 8 from $24,900.1811 Both trips carry Lindblad's air credit of up to $2,000 per person for US and Canadian residents who book by November 4, 2026 and buy flights through Lindblad Air.1119

Who should book National Geographic Explorer?

Book her if you want Lindblad's inclusive fare for less: on Antarctica and Patagonia and Fabled Lands of the North, the two trips both ships run at the same length, her lowest fares were $7,000 and $10,150 below Resolution's.11 She also suits travelers short on time who want to fly the Drake, and solo travelers, with 14 solo cabins. For a quick, low-cost first look at the Arctic, Arctic Edges starts at $7,400.11

Pick Resolution or Endurance instead if you want a balcony at a choice of prices, a PC5 ship or an X-Bow. To compare Lindblad with other operators, see Quark vs Lindblad, Lindblad vs Silversea and our guide to the cheapest way to Antarctica.

Our verdict

The value pick of Lindblad's polar ships: the same inclusive fare, with drinks, crew gratuities and kayaking, for less, since her lowest fares on the two trips both ships run at the same length were $7,000 and $10,150 lower. Most of her 2026-27 Antarctic season is short trips that fly across the Drake one or both ways. The trade-offs are a 1982 hull with no X-Bow or published Polar Class, and only 13 balcony cabins.

Best for: travelers short on time who want to fly the Drake, value seekers who want Lindblad's inclusions, solo travelers, families, Iceland and East Greenland in summer, Labrador and Newfoundland
