The short version
Quark wins on helicopters, emperor penguins, Svalbard value and 2026-27 availability: its cheapest open two-person cabin on the classic voyage cost $18,490, against $27,252 with Lindblad. Lindblad wins on inclusions, photography, fly-cruise price, cancellation terms and hull strength, and at the lowest fares a kayaker pays slightly less per day with Lindblad once Quark's $1,995 kayaking fee is added.
Should I choose Quark or Lindblad for Antarctica?
Choose Quark Expeditions for helicopters, the Snow Hill emperor penguin trip, a cheaper fare if you will share a triple, or a 2026-27 cabin that is still open at a mid-range price. Choose Lindblad Expeditions for a fare that already covers kayaking and crew gratuities, a National Geographic photographer on every polar departure, the cheaper fly-cruise, gentler cancellation terms and the PC5 sister ships.123418
Both are long-standing polar operators. Quark has belonged to IAATO, the Antarctic operators' association, since 1991, and Lindblad since 1997; both are members of AECO in the Arctic.5678 Both sail ships of fewer than 200 guests, and IAATO allows no more than 100 people ashore at one site at a time, fewer where a site's guidelines say so, so on every ship in both fleets you land in turns.9 We have not traveled with either; this comparison uses each company's own published fares, terms and ship data, read on October 14, 2026.

We left staff ratios out because they are not like for like. Quark guarantees "one staff member to every 9.5 guests" and Lindblad promises "no more than 1-to-16" across its whole fleet, but neither says which staff it counts. Ashore, IAATO requires at least one guide for every 20 visitors on both.17189
Which is cheaper, Quark or Lindblad?
Quark is cheaper for the classic sea voyage to the Antarctic Peninsula, by a wide margin on the cabins still open for 2026-27, and Lindblad is cheaper for the fly-cruise.14 Fares per person for two sharing, 2026-27 season: the lowest published fare, and the cheapest cabin still open on October 14, 2026.
| Trip type | Quark lowest1 | Quark cheapest open1 | Lindblad lowest4 | Lindblad cheapest open4 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Classic Peninsula voyage by sea | $16,595, 11 days (sold out) | $18,490, 11 days | $19,000, 12 days (sold out) | $27,252, 12 days |
| Fly both ways over the Drake Passage, 8 days | $19,695 | $19,695 | $12,600 with flights (sold out) | $14,060 with flights |
| With South Georgia | $31,895, 20 days ("Please Call") | $35,595, 20 days | $22,715, 21 days (sold out) | $41,093, 22 days |
Quark's $16,595 voyage sails from Ushuaia with one hotel night there, while its open $18,490 cabin is on World Voyager from Buenos Aires, with the hotel night and the flight to Ushuaia included. Lindblad's voyage starts with a hotel night in Santiago or Buenos Aires, and its flight to Ushuaia costs extra.11621 Quark's fly-cruise leaves from Punta Arenas, Lindblad's from Puerto Natales, and both fares include the flights to King George Island.2223
Kayakers should add Quark's $1,995 fee. At the lowest fares that tips the classic voyage Lindblad's way: $18,590 for 11 days with Quark, or $1,690 a day, against $1,583 a day with Lindblad. On the cabins still open, Quark stays cheaper even with kayaking: $20,485, or $1,862 a day, against $2,271.14 The per-day figures are our arithmetic.
None of these figures includes discounts. On the day we checked, Quark showed promo codes worth 5% to 20% off its brochure fares, and Lindblad offered US and Canadian residents up to $2,000 per person in air credit on select 2027 departures booked by November 4, 2026.135 For 2027-28, Lindblad's 12-day voyage starts at $13,500.4 Our guide to what an Antarctica trip costs builds the full budget.
Which line has the better ships?
Lindblad's newest pair is the stronger: Endurance and Resolution are PC5, rated for year-round operation in medium first-year ice, against PC6 for Quark's best-rated ships.1524 Quark's ships carry more guests on average, and only Quark carries helicopters.21314
| Ship | Line | Guests | Ice class | Length | Stands out for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ultramarine2 | Quark | 199 | 1A+, PC6 | 128 m (420 ft) | Two helicopters |
| Ocean Explorer13 | Quark | 138 | 1A, PC6 | 104.4 m (342 ft) | X-Bow hull |
| World Voyager14 | Quark | 168 | 1B | 126 m (413 ft) | All-balcony suites |
| National Geographic Endurance15 | Lindblad | 138 | PC5 | 124.4 m (408 ft) | X-Bow, PC5 |
| National Geographic Resolution25 | Lindblad | 138 | PC5 | 124 m (408 ft) | Endurance's twin |
| National Geographic Explorer26 | Lindblad | 148 | Ice-class hull | 112 m (367 ft) | Built 1982, rebuilt 2008 |
| National Geographic Orion27 | Lindblad | 102 | "High ice-class rating" | 103 m (337 ft) | Fewest guests of either fleet |
Explorer's build year comes from Lindblad's annual report.12 For ship size, the practical difference is small: with 102 to 199 guests, every ship in both fleets lands in groups under IAATO's 100-person limit.9
Quark or Lindblad for emperor penguins and helicopters?
Quark, clearly. Its Emperor Penguin Quest sails Ultramarine with a reduced 150 guests to the Snow Hill colony, which Quark puts at about 8,000 birds, spends five days in the area and uses the helicopters when ice blocks the ship; it leaves on November 3 and November 15, 2026, from $26,090 in a triple or $30,490 for two sharing.281 Lindblad has no ship departure built around emperor penguins in 2026-27.4 Quark's helicopter trips start at $16,890 in a triple for 12 days, with at least two flightseeing flights and one heli-landing included.129
Which is better for kayaking and photography?
Lindblad. Its fare includes kayaks and stand-up paddleboards, a National Geographic photographer on every departure of its four polar ships, a certified photo instructor and an OM System locker with cameras to borrow.318 Quark includes Zodiac cruising, hiking and the polar plunge, but sea kayaking costs $1,995 in Antarctica and its guided photography option $1,595.1 Quark's paid options include a night of camping ashore for $495 on Ocean Explorer and World Voyager.1
Which is better if you want to fly over the Drake?
Lindblad, on price: its 8-day fly-cruise starts at $12,600 with flights, and its cheapest open cabin was $14,060, against $19,695 for Quark's.41 Both fly to King George Island and cruise the Peninsula from there; Lindblad puts the flight at about two hours, and Quark's page says two hours in one place and three in another.3022 Their rules for weather delays differ:
- Both: you must be in the departure city by 3 p.m. on day 1, Puerto Natales for Lindblad and Punta Arenas for Quark, because the flight may be brought forward; miss it and neither refunds the trip.3031
- Lindblad: if the flight south cannot leave by 2 p.m. on day 3, the trip is cancelled and the cruise fare and internal air are refunded in full.30
- Quark: keeps trying until day 4; if the flight still cannot go, it offers to rebook you or refunds the cruise fare and unused add-ons, but not your other travel costs.3119
Our guide to flying or sailing the Drake Passage explains when flying is worth it.
Quark or Lindblad for Svalbard?
Quark, on price. Its 2027 Svalbard trips start at $9,890 for two sharing on the 8-day Spitsbergen Highlights, with cabins open, and its 11-day spring trips had two-person cabins open from $14,490, the $13,890 lead category being sold out. Its Helsinki round trips include the charter flight to Longyearbyen and airport hotel nights.132 Lindblad's 10-day Svalbard trip on Endurance starts at $14,500 for two sharing, but that category was sold out and the cheapest open cabin cost $15,230; the group flight from Oslo is extra.433 Both lines start their Svalbard season in late April, and Lindblad's fare includes the kayaking that Quark sells there for $1,795.41 Quark's helicopters do not fly in Svalbard.2 For the wildlife, see polar bears.
Which is easier to cancel?
Lindblad, except in Quark's first 15 days. Lindblad charges no penalty if you cancel 120 days or more before departure: your advance payment, 15% of the cabin fare, becomes a travel certificate valid for 12 months toward a future trip. From 119 to 90 days it keeps 50% of the trip cost, and inside 90 days all of it.3420 Quark lets you cancel free within 15 days of confirmation if you booked more than 180 days ahead; after that it keeps 25% of the booking up to 120 days out, 75% from 119 to 90 days, and everything after that.19 So before 120 days the most you risk with Lindblad is a 15% credit, against a 25% fee with Quark, and from 119 to 90 days Lindblad keeps 50% against Quark's 75%.
Who should pick Quark, and who should pick Lindblad?
Pick Quark if you:
- want helicopter flightseeing or the Snow Hill emperor penguin trip;28
- will share a triple, where its fares start at $14,895;1
- need a 2026-27 Antarctic cabin at a mid-range price, or want Svalbard with the charter flight included.1
Pick Lindblad if you:
- plan to kayak and tip, and would rather it was all in the fare;3
- care most about photography and naturalist guiding;3
- want the cheapest way to fly over the Drake, from $12,600, or $14,060 for a cabin still open;4
- want the PC5 ships Endurance and Resolution, or gentler cancellation terms.1534
