Is Ocean Explorer a good ship for Antarctica?

Yes, if you want a smaller Quark ship with a private balcony. Ocean Explorer carries 138 guests, has an Ulstein X-Bow, zero-speed stabilizers and a PC6 ice class, and every cabin except the porthole Studio Singles has a walk-out balcony. The cheapest 2026-27 Antarctic fare on sale is $15,095 per person for 11 days from Ushuaia in a shared Triple Suite, booked by phone. Expect landings in two groups.

Is Ocean Explorer a good ship for Antarctica?

Yes, if you want a private balcony on a small ship for a classic Antarctic Peninsula trip. Ocean Explorer is the smallest of Quark Expeditions' three ships, at 138 guests, and carries Quark's lowest published 2026-27 Antarctic brochure fares.227 It has an Ulstein X-Bow, a 1A and PC6 ice rating, 15 Zodiacs and no helicopters, and of its 72 suites only the porthole Studio Singles lack a walk-out balcony.12

The cheapest 2026-27 fare still on sale is $15,095 per person in a shared Triple Suite on the 11-day Antarctic Explorer from Ushuaia on November 12, 2026, marked "Please Call" rather than bookable online; that departure showed a 10% promo code with no end date. The lowest fare bookable online was $18,495 in a Veranda Suite on November 21, 2026, where the $14,895 Triple Suite was sold out. We read the page on October 15, 2026.12 Because it starts in Ushuaia, you pay your own way there; Quark's Buenos Aires round trips on Ultramarine include that flight.14

Who operates Ocean Explorer, and who owns it?

Quark runs the voyages; Denmark's SunStone Maritime Group owns the ship and says it is on year-round charter to Quark.3 SunStone delivered it in 2021 as one of its Infinity-class ships, built in China to an Ulstein design.64 Quark announced the charter in January 2024, and the ship joined its fleet that November.42 In September 2023, when it ran aground in Greenland, it was operated by Aurora Expeditions.21

What are Ocean Explorer's specs?

Ocean Explorer is 342 ft (104.4 m) long and carries 138 guests and 105 staff and crew on Quark voyages.1 Quark and owner figures:

SpecOcean Explorer
Cabins72 suites (Quark); 77 cabins, 151 beds (SunStone)23
Beam, draft60.4 ft (18.4 m), 17.4 ft (5.3 m)3
Gross tonnage8,2283
Ice class1A and PC61
Speed16.5 knots full, 11 knots economical3
StabilizersRolls-Royce Aquarius 100, working at rest3
Zodiacs151
Lifesaving2 lifeboats of 150 places, 4 liferafts of 203

Neither company explains why Quark sells 138 berths where SunStone lists 151 beds.23 At Quark's full load of 243 people the lifeboats alone hold 300, and Quark says it carries 25% more lifeboat and liferaft capacity than required.39 Our Le Commandant Charcot page sets out the seven polar classes, and the Sylvia Earle page explains how the 1A and PC6 labels relate.

How many passengers go ashore at once on Ocean Explorer?

A full ship lands in two groups, because IAATO allows at most 100 visitors at a site at once, not counting expedition staff.7 It also requires one guide per 20 visitors and one ship per site, and keeps its tightest landing limits for ships of 201 to 500 passengers.7

Expect a near-full ship: IAATO counted 15 Ocean Explorer voyages and 1,931 passengers in 2025-26, about 129 a trip.8 Its preliminary estimate for 2026-27, dated April 10, 2026, is lower, at 15 voyages and 1,095 passengers (about 73 a trip), but by October most cheaper cabins were sold out.812 Aurora caps the sister ship Sylvia Earle at 130 guests.26 See small vs large expedition ships.

Does Ocean Explorer's X-Bow make the Drake Passage smoother?

Possibly, but we found no independent test of this ship. Ulstein, which designed the bow, claims gentle wave entry, minimal slamming, reduced pitching and less speed loss, and Quark promises calm sailing in rough water.101 The bow also creates the two-story library on Deck 6, with floor-to-ceiling glass and room for 47.1

On the Antarctic Explorer you cross the 500-mile (800 km) Drake Passage on days 3 and 4 and days 9 and 10.14 Quark tells guests to see their own doctor and carry seasickness medication, and notes that not every crossing is rough.11 See Drake Passage seasickness and whether to fly or sail the Drake.

Which Ocean Explorer cabin should you book?

For two in Antarctica, the Veranda Suite: on October 15, 2026, every cheaper category was sold out or marked Please Call on all nine Antarctic Explorer departures.12 In Svalbard, cheaper balcony cabins were still open. Fares per person, cheapest departure at each pole:

The Veranda Suite adds a sitting area with a sofa bed. Veranda Staterooms vary in size across three decks, and six on Deck 6 (609 to 612, 614, 615) have no sitting area, so ask for a cabin number. The Triple Suite has two rooms, with two single beds inside, a third bed in the outer room, a bathtub and a double-size balcony.1 Quark warns that triple rooms may not be available at the included Ushuaia hotel.14 Our balcony guide weighs the cost.

Is Ocean Explorer good for solo travelers?

Only if you book early: it has seven dedicated single cabins, but few were left.2 The Studio Veranda Single was sold out on all 28 departures, and the porthole Studio Single was open only on the February 3 Fly South, Sail North ($28,595), four Svalbard trips from May 17 to June 10 ($20,690 to $20,890) and two West Greenland trips in August ($24,690).12

On the November 12 Antarctic Explorer, a Veranda Suite for one cost $32,121, about 1.7 times the $18,895 per-person shared fare, and Quark also sold shared places, listed separately for men and women, at $18,895.13 Its solo traveler offer had ended.23

What is included on Ocean Explorer, and what costs extra?

The Antarctic Explorer fare covers meals; beer, standard wines, spirits and cocktails during bar hours and dinner; Wi-Fi on one device; a parka to keep; boots on loan; landings and Zodiac cruising; one Ushuaia hotel night; and transfers.14 Flights, insurance, mandatory waterproof pants and tips are extra; Quark requires at least USD $50,000 of medical insurance and leaves tips to your discretion.1411 The fly-cruise pages list only select beer, wines and cocktails.1516

Antarctic dates run from 2026 into 2027; Arctic dates are 2027. Fly-cruise fares include the flight to or from King George Island and Punta Arenas hotel nights.1516 Svalbard fares include Helsinki airport hotel nights and the charter to Longyearbyen and back, valued at $1,495; Greenland fares include charter flights from Reykjavík, valued at $995 or $1,495.1812 Every departure showed a promo code (5% to 15% off in Antarctica, 10% to 20% in the Arctic, plus 5% for paying in full on Arctic trips), with no end date shown; we have not applied them.12

Flying both ways roughly doubles the daily cost: by our arithmetic, Crossing the Circle works out to about $2,645 a day and the Antarctic Explorer to $1,372, though the first includes the flights and two Punta Arenas hotel nights.1215 For a full budget, see what an Antarctica trip costs and the cheapest way to Antarctica.

Where does Ocean Explorer sail in 2026-27 and 2027?

Antarctica from late October 2026 to mid-March 2027, Svalbard from late April to mid-July 2027, and Greenland in August and September.12 Penguins of the Far South visits the Falkland Islands on days 4 and 5, South Georgia on days 8 to 11 and the South Shetland Islands and Peninsula on days 14 to 17.17 In January and February, three Antarctic Express trips replace one or both Drake crossings with a charter flight between Punta Arenas and King George Island; Crossing the Circle also aims for the Antarctic Circle at 66°33′S if conditions allow.1516

Svalbard trips fly from Helsinki to Longyearbyen and give seven full expedition days routed around the sea ice.1819 Spring trips sail when the ice is at or near its annual maximum and polar bears may hunt seals at its edge; summer trips aim for bird cliffs, wildflowers and baleen whales, none guaranteed.1819 See Svalbard cruises and Greenland cruises.

What happened when Ocean Explorer ran aground in Greenland?

On September 11, 2023, with 206 people aboard and Aurora Expeditions operating it, Ocean Explorer ran aground in Alpefjord, Northeast Greenland National Park, and was stuck for three days; no one was hurt.2021 After two failed attempts to float off at high tide, the Greenlandic fisheries research trawler Tarajoq pulled it free on September 14.2122

SunStone reported no pollution and no hull breach. Denmark's accident investigation board (DMAIB) found no serious damage and opened an investigation with the Bahamas, then the ship's flag state, after it reached Reykjavík.2220 Danish police opened a preliminary inquiry, and agency reports noted the area had few depth surveys.22 In October 2026 DMAIB still listed the case as ongoing, so no official cause has been published.20 The grounding came more than a year before Quark took the ship.2

How does Ocean Explorer compare with its Infinity-class sisters?

On paper it is nearly the same ship as six SunStone sisters, all 104.4 m (342 ft) long, so the choice comes down to operator, route and price.5

Within Quark, Ultramarine carries 199 guests and two helicopters, and World Voyager, which runs the fly-both-ways Fly the Drake trips, carries 168 guests in balcony suites (some with only glass Juliet balconies) at ice class 1B.2524272 See World Voyager and Quark vs Lindblad.

Who should book Ocean Explorer, and who should skip it?

Book it for a balcony on an 11-day Peninsula trip at the lowest Antarctic fare Quark still had on sale, if you can reach Ushuaia yourself.1227 It also suits groups of three (the Triple Suite is the cheapest category on every departure), early-season campers, small-ship fly-cruisers and Svalbard in spring.1218

Skip it for helicopters, which only Ultramarine offers at Quark,225 or if you travel alone and want a private cabin, since the singles were nearly all sold out.12 Our guide on how to choose an Antarctica cruise covers the rest.

Our verdict

Quark's best-value ship for a classic Peninsula trip: 138 guests, a balcony in every category but the porthole singles, and the lowest Antarctic fare still on sale in Quark's 2026-27 range, before flights to Ushuaia. It has no helicopters, its triples and solo cabins sell out first, and it ran aground in Greenland in 2023 under its previous operator, with no injuries.

Best for: couples who want a balcony without paying for a suite, groups of three, campers and kayakers on early-season Peninsula trips, travelers who want to fly the Drake one or both ways, Svalbard in spring
