White Desert flies small groups from Cape Town to the interior of Antarctica, where it runs three heated camps in Dronning Maud Land and flies on to the South Pole.1 It is a different trip from the ship voyages to the Antarctic Peninsula: a flight instead of a sea crossing, and nights in a camp on the ice. White Desert runs no ships, so you will not find it in our voyage finder; it sells fixed-date fly-in trips, priced below.4 Patrick Woodhead, a polar explorer, founded it in 2005 with his then-wife Robyn, starting with "three small tents, a loan"; today it says it runs three camps, three aircraft and over 130 staff.2 Each camp takes 12 guests at most, in six suites, and the season runs from November to February.3 IAATO dates its first operational season to 2006.1

How much does White Desert cost?

From $16,500 for a day trip to $115,500 for a week, per person, sharing. These are the 2026-27 prices on White Desert's own rates page, read October 15, 2026; "per day" is our division:45

Discovery Week is a special case: it is built around talks and field trips with scientists, and 65% of the price is a donation to the White Desert Foundation Science Grant, tax deductible for US guests through a 501(c)(3).6 Prices rise for 2027-28: South Pole & Penguins goes to $105,000 at Explorer and $120,000 at the other camps, and Baby Penguins to $72,000 and $82,000.4 The rates page shows no availability; the trip dates are fixed, and once you confirm yours, a deposit secures them.43

The multi-day prices include all accommodation, food and drinks, alcohol included, in Antarctica; all activities, excursions and experiences; the return flights from Cape Town with 51 lb (23 kg) of hold luggage and 15 lb (7 kg) of hand luggage; the loan of certain items of polar clothing, as marked on the equipment list; and car transfers in Cape Town to the safety briefing and between the airport and your hotel for the Antarctic flights.5 They leave out your flights to and from Cape Town, hotels and meals there, insurance, the polar gear you are required to bring, baggage over the allowance and any extra costs if weather keeps you in Cape Town.5 The day trip's price covers the return flights, with 15 lb (7 kg) of hand luggage only, and the car transfers to the safety briefing and the flights.5

What is Whichaway Camp like?

Whichaway is White Desert's original camp, opened in 2005 on the site of a former East German science base, in one of Antarctica's rare ice-free oases.7 The oasis is the Schirmacher Oasis, a ribbon of bare rock about 15.5 miles (25 km) long with more than a hundred freshwater lakes, and the camp, on the edge of a frozen lake, is fully demountable.8 It has six heated pods, each with an en-suite shower and a glass conservatory, plus a sauna and ice plunge, massages and a yoga dome; activities include ice climbing, abseiling, glacier walks and a zipline, and a professional photographer records your stay.7

The other two camps differ in ways that change the price:

At Explorer, the South Pole trip costs $20,500 less than at Whichaway or Echo, by our arithmetic; for that, the other two camps give you a pod with your own shower instead of a tent.411

How do you get to White Desert's camps?

By private jet from Cape Town, after two days of buffer there. White Desert asks guests to arrive in Cape Town at least two days before the trip and to leave two days after, and holds a safety briefing and kit check at its office at 16 Loop Street.3 The flight takes about 5.5 hours and covers 2,610 miles (4,220 km) to Wolf's Fang, a blue-ice runway about 1.9 miles (3 km) long that White Desert opened in 2017 after three years and €1.5 million of work.12 It says the runway is the only one in private hands on the continent that can take an intercontinental jet, and that it is groomed for 22 hours before each arrival.12

White Desert flies an Airbus A330 or A340 with lie-flat business seats, but its terms let White Desert swap in a smaller private jet depending on weather, runway, numbers and permits.1213 On the ice, a Basler BT-67 flies to the South Pole and the emperor colonies, and a Twin Otter serves remote skiways.12 Summer temperatures on the ice average 23°F (-5°C).3 For other ways in, see flights to Antarctica.

What do you do on a White Desert trip?

It depends on the itinerary, and weather decides the order:

  • South Pole & Penguins flies 2.5 hours by Basler to the emperor penguin colony at Atka Bay, then on another day flies five hours to Dixie's Camp at 83°S to refuel and two more to the Pole, returning to Dixie's to sleep in expedition tents at 8,660 ft (2,640 m).141516 White Desert says the Pole is visited by fewer than 500 people a year.4
  • Baby Penguins & Blue Tunnels runs in November, when the Atka Bay chicks are newly hatched, and adds blue ice tunnels.17
  • South Pole & Blue Rivers and The Long Stay pair the South Pole with what White Desert calls Antarctica's "rarely seen Blue Rivers", on late-season dates in January; the Long Stay uses both Whichaway and Echo.43
  • Antarctica in a Day includes an ice cave, abseiling down a glacier and a drink in an ice bar before the flight home.18

Between flights, the camps offer glacier walks, nunatak climbs, ice climbing, fat biking and cross-country skiing.79 Guests must be 10 to 85 years old, and 16 to 75 at the time of travel to go to the South Pole.513

What happens if the weather stops a flight?

White Desert can move the dates, lengthen or shorten the trip, or drop parts of it, and once the trip has started it gives no refunds for those changes unless its own suppliers refund it. The exception is a fixed payment: $10,000 per person if the South Pole flight is dropped from South Pole & Penguins or South Pole & Blue Rivers (the clause does not name The Long Stay), and $5,000 if the emperor penguin flight is dropped from South Pole & Penguins or Baby Penguins & Blue Tunnels.13 Its terms also let it drop any excursion for force majeure, naming avian flu in the penguin colonies as an example.13 Extra hotel nights in Cape Town caused by weather are yours to pay, which is why the two-day buffer matters.53 White Desert runs its own weather forecasting team for the flights.12

What are White Desert's booking terms?

Strict, and written under English law. The terms of March 2026 set out:13

  • Payment: 25% to book more than 12 months out, 50% by 12 months, and the balance 5 months before; bookings inside 5 months pay in full.13
  • Cancellation by you: 75% back if you cancel more than 12 months out, 50% between 2 and 12 months, nothing inside 2 months.13
  • Cancellation by White Desert: for low numbers up to 20 days before, with an alternative trip or a full refund.
  • Insurance: at least $500,000 of medical and repatriation cover, lasting 5 days past your return; unscheduled evacuation flights are billed to you.13
  • Medical: reports for every guest within a month of booking, on a form completed by a registered doctor.
  • South Africa: your passport needs two blank pages and six months' validity to enter.

Is White Desert an IAATO member?

Yes. IAATO lists White Desert Ltd as a land-based operations member, and its UK-authorized trips carried 537 clients in 2025-26, more than any other deep-field operator; IAATO's preliminary estimate for 2026-27 is 580.191 Co-founder Robyn Woodhead, no longer involved with the company, served on IAATO's board.2 IAATO says deep-field and air operators carry roughly 1% of Antarctica's visitors and often run one guide to every three clients.1 For the rules every visitor follows, see Antarctica visitor rules.

Should you choose White Desert or ALE?

Choose White Desert for its camps and Antarctic Logistics & Expeditions (ALE) for the lower price; they are the two largest fly-in operators by IAATO's client counts:1

Is White Desert worth it?

For the right traveler. It is the most comfortable way we found to reach the interior, it reaches the South Pole and an emperor colony on one 7-day trip, and its day trip is the cheapest way we found to stand on the inland ice. Against that, the South Pole costs at least $28,250 more than ALE's 6-day flight, by our arithmetic, the terms protect you only partly if a key flight is lost, and you need spare days in Cape Town at each end.42213

Our verdict

The most comfortable way we found into Antarctica's interior: small heated camps, a 5.5-hour flight from Cape Town, and the South Pole and an emperor colony on one 7-day trip. Its South Pole trip costs at least $28,250 more than ALE's, the weather decides what you actually do, and if a key flight is lost the refund is a fixed $10,000 or $5,000.
