The narrow entrance of the Lemaire Channel between steep snow-covered cliffs, with brash ice on the water

Lemaire Channel

Sailing the Lemaire Channel: its size, how ice can close it, what you see from deck, the landing sites at its southern end and which cruises plan to go through.

What is the Lemaire Channel, and will your ship get through it?

The Lemaire Channel is a passage about 7 miles (11 km) long between Booth Island and the west coast of the Antarctic Peninsula, only about 1,970 ft (600 m) wide at its narrowest, with peaks rising some 3,280 ft (1,000 m). Ships sail it for the scenery, but icebergs can block it completely, so operators promise it only if the ice allows.

Facts checked October 15, 2026 against 22 sources.

Getting there
By ship only, on Peninsula voyages heading south toward Petermann Island and the Antarctic Circle; the channel runs from Splitwind Island and False Cape Renard in the northeast to Roullin Point and Cape Cloos in the southwest.
Wildlife
Humpback, minke and killer whales often appear in the channel; Adélie and gentoo penguins, blue-eyed shags and leopard seals at Petermann and Pleneau islands just beyond its southern end.
Landings
No landings in the channel itself, which ships sail through; nearby Petermann Island, Pleneau Island and Port Charcot each have Antarctic Treaty visitor guidelines, with 100 visitors ashore at most.

The Lemaire Channel is a narrow strait on the west coast of the Antarctic Peninsula, separating Booth Island from the mainland's Graham Coast.1 It is a passage, not a landing: ships sail through it for the cliffs and ice on either side, on the way south to the penguin colonies of Petermann and Pleneau islands or toward the Antarctic Circle.23 Operators sell it hard. Scenic says it is often called "Kodak Alley", Poseidon calls it "Kodak Gap", and HX says it is often hailed as the world's most picturesque channel.456

How long and wide is the Lemaire Channel?

About 7 miles (11 km) long and as little as 1,970 ft (600 m) wide, between peaks that rise to around 3,280 ft (1,000 m). Oceanwide gives those figures and a depth of about 490 ft (150 m).7 Other sources give wider figures: the US gazetteer says it averages about a mile across, and HX gives 1 mile (1.6 km).89 The channel runs northeast to southwest, from Splitwind Island and False Cape Renard to Roullin Point and Cape Cloos.1

Will your ship get through the Lemaire Channel?

Not always. Glaciers along the channel calve icebergs into it and sometimes block it completely, Oceanwide says, and Quark warns it can become impassable when ice fills the passage.710 No operator we checked publishes how often its ships make it through, and their itineraries hedge to match, as the table of voyages at the end of this page shows.

Getting through does not mean open water. When Silversea named Silver Endeavour in the channel in November 2022, the ship slid between icebergs and steep cliffs and cut through first-year ice about 3 ft (1 m) thick.12 And a blocked channel does not always end the trip south: HX's Iconic Antarctica plans to reach the Penola Strait, south of the Lemaire, through the French Channel, and uses the Lemaire only if ice and sea conditions allow.6

What will you see in the Lemaire Channel?

Steep cliffs and rugged, snow-covered peaks close on both sides, glaciers that calve into the water, and drifting ice.712 Killer whales, humpbacks and minke whales often appear, according to Oceanwide.7 Operators picture it from the open deck: Quark's photos show passengers at the bow as the ship cruises through, Poseidon invites guests onto the open deck while Sea Spirit threads the narrows, and Scenic tells guests to set an alarm if the ship goes through.10134

Light is rarely a problem. At nearby Port Lockroy the sun is up for almost 22 hours at the December solstice, and from mid-December to mid-January it never gets darker than civil twilight, so a late-evening or very early transit still has light.14 See our Antarctica weather by month guide for conditions through the season.

Where do ships stop after the Lemaire Channel?

At a cluster of sites just beyond its southern end, each governed by separate Antarctic Treaty limits. Landing figures are IAATO's count of ship and yacht landings in 2025-26.1516

SiteWhat is thereLimitsLandings, 2025-26
Petermann IslandThe southernmost gentoo colony, per Quark, with Adélies, shags and skuas10100 ashore; 3 ships a day, no more than 2 over 200 passengers118
Port Charcot, Booth IslandA cairn left by the French Antarctic Expedition of 1903 to 190517100 ashore; 2 ships a day, no more than 1 over 20084
Yalour IslandsAbout 8,000 pairs of Adélies, per Quark1060 ashore; 2 ships a day, no more than 1 over 20053
Pleneau IslandAdélie penguins and blue-eyed shags; leopard seals2100 ashore; 3 ships a day50
Wordie House (British Base F), Winter IslandA historic hut, being surveyed by UKAHT in 2026-271836 ashore and 12 inside; 2 ships a day; the key is held at Ukraine's Vernadsky station39

Ship size matters here. Port Charcot and the Yalour Islands each take only one ship of more than 200 passengers a day, so if yours is that big, expect fewer choices south of the channel than a small ship gets.15 At Petermann, Pleneau and the Yalours, nobody may be ashore from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m., apart from organized overnight stays at Petermann and Pleneau.15 The Port Lockroy museum, the Neko Harbour landing and Cuverville Island lie to the north, and many itineraries combine them with the channel.

Who was the Lemaire Channel named after?

Charles Lemaire, a Belgian explorer of the Congo who helped organize Adrien de Gerlache's Belgian Antarctic Expedition and who, Oceanwide notes, never set foot in Antarctica himself.17 A German expedition sighted the channel in 1874, Gerlache's expedition first navigated and roughly charted it on February 12, 1898, and the French Antarctic Expedition charted it further in 1904.1 (The US gazetteer dates the first passage to December 1898.)8

Which cruises sail the Lemaire Channel?

The voyages we track that name the channel word it very differently, and the wording tells you how firmly each operator plans the transit. From firmest to loosest:

VoyageOperator and shipWhat the itinerary says
Elephant Island, Weddell Sea and Polar Circle, March 2027Oceanwide, PlanciusDay 8 is "passing the Lemaire Channel" on the way to Port Charcot17

Highlights of Antarctica and HX's other Antarctic voyagesHX, Fridtjof Nansen and Roald AmundsenNamed in a standard list of possible sites that appears on each voyage page9

Even the firmest wording is a plan, not a promise, given the ice. On price, Poseidon's Realm of Penguins on November 28, 2026 starts at $8,846 per person in a Triple Suite shared by three, after a 25% discount for new bookings made October 1 to November 30, 2026 (was $11,795); it includes a hotel night in Ushuaia, a drinks package and a parka, but not airfare, read October 15, 2026.5
