Heritage Adventurer

Is Heritage Adventurer a good ship for Antarctica?

Yes, for the Ross Sea. Built in Finland in 1991 and sailed by Hapag-Lloyd as the Hanseatic until 2018, she has a 1A Super ice class and in 2014 came within 298 miles (480 km) of the North Pole, then a passenger-ship record. Heritage carries at most 140 guests. Her 28-day 2026-27 Ross Sea voyage costs from $34,285 per person in an open triple.

Is Heritage Adventurer a good ship for Antarctica?

Yes, especially for the Ross Sea, where she runs more voyages than any other ship: two of the three Ross Sea-only voyages in IAATO's 2026-27 estimate.1 She was built in 1991 at Rauma, Finland, specifically for polar work, and carries a 1A Super ice class that Heritage Expeditions calls the highest rating for a passenger ship.2 Heritage sails her with no more than 140 guests, although she was designed for 184.2

What you give up is a modern cabin. Every standard cabin is 22 m² with windows or portholes, none of Heritage's cabin descriptions mentions a balcony, and kayaking costs extra.3 If you want a newer ship on the same long Southern Ocean routes, compare her with the options at the end of this page.

What was Heritage Adventurer before?

She is the former MS Hanseatic, which Hapag-Lloyd called the holder of the highest ice class for passenger ships. She sailed for Hapag-Lloyd Cruises from 1993 to 2018, and on August 26, 2014, in the Northeast Passage, she came within 298 miles (480 km) of the North Pole, closer than any passenger ship had been before.4 Heritage says she has held records for the most northerly and most southerly navigations and has transited both the Northwest and Northeast Passages.2

Before Heritage she also carried the names Resolute and Society Adventurer, and sailed for Hanseatic Tours and One Ocean Expeditions as well as Hapag-Lloyd.56 Heritage announced in May 2021 that it would operate her, renamed after HMS Adventure, the consort of HMS Resolution on Captain Cook's second Pacific voyage.5 She was refurbished in Europe, and her first Heritage voyage left Bali on October 11, 2022, before she headed south to New Zealand and the Ross Sea that season.6 Heritage calls her the "Grande Dame of Expedition Cruising".2

How strong is a 1A Super ice class?

It is the top class in the Finnish-Swedish ice rules, written for ships in the Baltic, where it means a ship built for "extremely difficult ice conditions".7 Heritage lists her classification as Lloyd's 1AS and GL E4, the Lloyd's Register and Germanischer Lloyd notations that correspond to 1A Super.28

Newer expedition ships are rated on a different scale, the Polar Classes, which run from PC1 (year-round operation in all polar waters) to PC7.9 The sources we used give no official conversion between the two systems, so treat claims that one ship is "stronger" than another with care. For scale, Ponant's Le Commandant Charcot is rated PC2.10

Long sea passages are built into her main route: a Ross Sea voyage from New Zealand spends days 8 to 10 and 23 to 25 entirely at sea.3

What are the cabins like, and what do they cost?

Heritage sells eight cabin types on the Ross Sea voyage, and all but one measure 22 m² (237 sq ft). Fares below are per person for the January 6, 2027 departure, read on October 15, 2026; the triples sleep three, with a Pullman bed that folds down from the wall.3

The Heritage Suite price is 10% off for bookings made before October 30, 2026.3 Worsley and Heritage Suites add in-room dining, a minibar restocked daily and a $100 per person spa credit, and the Heritage Suite adds free laundry.3 Solo travelers have dedicated single cabins: the Superior Single costs 23% more than a Deck 5 Superior shared by two (our arithmetic).3

How many passengers go ashore at once?

At most 100 at a time at an Antarctic site, so on a full sailing of 140 the ship lands in groups.12 IAATO's counts suggest her Ross Sea voyages run below that ceiling: 281 passengers on two voyages in 2025-26 and an estimated 260 on two in 2026-27, or about 130 to 140 per trip (our arithmetic).1 She carries 14 Zodiacs, and Heritage aims for one guide for every 12 guests.213 On sub-Antarctic islands landings depend on permits: at The Snares, for example, guests stay in the Zodiacs because landings are not permitted.14

Optional sea kayaking with an expert guide is offered on her Ross Sea voyages, including the sub-Antarctic stops, at extra cost.3 The January 6, 2027 Ross Sea departure also carries a wildlife photography workshop with seabird photographer Rachel Bigsby.3

Where does Heritage Adventurer sail in 2026-27?

She spends the southern summer on the sub-Antarctic islands south of New Zealand and in the Ross Sea, then heads north. These are her polar and sub-Antarctic departures, all round trips from Queenstown by way of the Port of Bluff except where shown.15

Choose Heritage Adventurer for the Ross Sea and the islands south of New Zealand; no other ship offers both on as many dates. Choose Hanseatic Inspiration for a newer ship with balconies on the Peninsula side, though her 2026-27 Antarctic voyages are booked up, and Heritage Discoverer for Heritage's style of trip from Ushuaia.2223

Who should skip Heritage Adventurer?

Skip her if you want a private balcony, a cabin bigger than 22 m² below suite level, or a ship built this century.32 Skip her too if you can only travel in the Northern Hemisphere summer, since she has no Arctic voyages in 2027.15 And if four weeks is too long, her 12-day sub-Antarctic trips show the same albatrosses and penguins of Macquarie and Campbell without the Ross Sea, though most cabins on the 2026 dates were already waitlisted.14

Our verdict

The ship for the Ross Sea: no other ship has as many Ross Sea departures in 2026-27, she was built for polar ice, and Heritage sails her 44 guests below her design capacity. She is 35 years old, every cabin below the top suite is 22 m² with windows rather than a balcony, and kayaking costs extra.

Best for: the Ross Sea, sub-Antarctic island birding south of New Zealand, history readers following Scott and Shackleton, friends sharing a triple
